CHICAGO , , mn. 4. Wheat gained
today on largo exports , n doroaso In stocks
of flour , encouraging cables and good buy-

much. Provisions closed at the Highest
quotations of the day.
Wheat Btartcd firm , with May ; < c higher ,
nt MJi'o. Now York sent largo soiling orders
early and Harry Champlln and Pardrldgo
nml I-ocmlng sold heavily. The result was
H iosi of % c. A reaction sot in with the
oncouraglng cable advices and prices began
to advance. Liverpool was quoted steadier
and a privtito Paris cable told that the mar
ket there was very llrm. Chicago receipts
were under the estlmaicnnd only 45 cars are
expected tomorrow.
Another Influence which added to the
Btrongth of the market was the decrease la
thu stocks of Hour. Public stocks of Hour In
this country on January 1 , as eomparca with
those on December 1 , decreased 23-1,000 bbls.
At the marked advance In prices there were
some realizing sales , causing n temporary
reaction , but the firmness of the continental
rabies forced prices up again and May closed
llto above the bottom figures of t'io day and
but tc from the top. May opened nt tiS c ,
lost ' -foe , advanced % c , then i c , reacted > c ,
and advanced % o to the closo. at GGJ < c.
Corn was firmer. In sympathy with wiicat
andowing to the Indications of n dccrcaso In
the movement , May opened ! c higher , at
JiS'Yc , declined # 0 , advanced J c and closed
at tlio top ligurc-s of the day 8'J 'c.
Oats was llrm , in sympathy with the
strength in wheat and corn. Receipts were
ono car under the estimate and the estimate
for tomorrow's ' receipts was light. May
opened Jfo higher , at SOJ o and advanced to
flic , closing at that figure.
The provision market opened on higher-
prices for llvo hops. Armour & Co. and
Swift ft Co. did considerable buying and
prices advanced stcaaiiy out with few and
temporary | ) reactions. Compared with In.st.
night May pork is J5c ! higher. Mny lard 7 e

STOCKS AND 1IONDS.
Marked Chance lu the Temper of Specula
tion Characterized Dentines.
NEW Yonic , Jan. 4. A marked change
n the temper of speculation characterized
the dealings on the Stock exchange today
and despite the efforts of the bears to do-
> ress the market by means of rumors , tn-
uondocs and direct oppressive movements on
the weak properties , prices moved upward
n solid phalanx , with but few of the active
stocks lagging behind. In the Dearly dea- !
ngs the short interest depressed St. Paul
a fraction on reports that the earnings for
, ho fourth week in December would bo much
jcavler than for any of the prceeuinp ; weeks ,
but when the figures were published and
did not fullHl mournful prophecies the re
vulsion of feeling carried the stock upward ,
'orclng the bears to cover in quick order ;
urge blocks being bought at advancing quo
tations.
Early In the day nn earnest effort was
made to force the bull pool in Western
Union to liquidate by various selling dovlnes ,
and strong hopes wore Indulged in of uncov
ering slop loss orders which should cause a
serious break , but the buying was too heavy
'or the short interest and the result was
that Hellers of the morning became pur
chasers in thu later dealings , thus materially
assisting In the consequent appreciation of
the shares. Sugar was not in goou tone in
the open dealings and broke llf Jpo'rcent
ipon u much smaller volumoof business than
s usually required to affect this stock , the
depression being mainly duo to lack of inside
support. Subsequently , the general buoy
ancy carried Sugar up 1 % jiercent. hut in

occurred and the last sale was % per cent
below last night's prices , Distilling was
sagged oft a small fraction during the morn-
ng , for thu lack of buying orders , grow

The coal stocks were all strong. Northern

favorable to the earning capaclt > of the
company and also owing to the contest over
, ho receivership. The general market was
benefited by advices from Chicago of a con

rales. At thu very opening of tlio day thu
market was a rising otio unit though occa
sional reactions tomporailly chocked the ad
vance the losses were quickly recovered , and
the latu dealings were characterized by tin
activity and firmness which continued to

fOJl.'i ' pur cent.
The Post says : The process of reaction
from Tuesday's nomi-paiile continued today ,
ind recent sellers of slock were forced into
some rather heavy covering. There was ,
noreover. an obvious ami decided chuck to

Everything- connected
with Butter
churns , patters , tubs , firkins ought to
be washed with Pearline. That gets
at the soakecl-in grease as nothing
else in the world can. Things may
seem to be clean when you've
washed them in the usual way ; but
use Pearline , and they really are
clean. It might make all the dif
ference , sometimes , between good
butter and bad. Wherever you
want thorough cleanliness , or want
to'save your labor , the best thing
to use Pearline.
CicvA Peddlers nml some ttnicrupulous Rroccrs will tell you " this is as good as"
wDdlU. or " the same as Pearline. " IT'S ' l''ALS13 Pearline is never peddled ,
