STOCKS AND HONDS.
S'o locrenie of the Activity In Securities
Noticed.
NEW VOIIK , Dec. 15. There was no In
crease of activity on the Stock exchange
oday'lf- anything the speculation vrns less
utercstiiiK and devoid of feature than on
any of the days ot dullness that has pre
ceded it. The return of President Ueinhari ;
of the Atchlson , giving ( lat denial of all
the unfavorable rumors current during his
absence , created scarcely a ripple of interest ,
the only cvldcnco of increased attention to
the shares being slightly larger sales , nnd
contrary to what might bo expected , a decline -
cline in both stocks and bonds. St. Paul
was pressed for sale on a renewal of the re
ports of the decreased earnings and predic-
lens that the earnings of the second week
In .December would snow a very small loss.
I'ho granger shares naturally suffered
sympathetically , but the declines were con-
llned to fractions.
The industrials-were the strongest shares
on the list , and closed generally at tin ad
vance on yesterday's final , sales. Hubber
preferred advanced J per cent and Great
Northern preferred shows a gain of U.f per
cent. A majority of the shares traded in
marked a decline on the ( lay's transactions
which was fractional. Erie was neglected
on the exchange , but rumors were rife with
its affairs ana declared that the reorganization
'
tion committee had decided on a plan'which
J. Pierpont Morgan was asked to manage
and which provided for n blanket 5 per cent
mortgage to cover the seconds , funded lives ,
incomes , collateral trusts and floating debt ,
and furnish sufficient capital to run the road
for several years without running the risk
of having it again in financial difficulties be
fore the plan of reorganization shall have
had a chance to work.
The amount of the blanket mortgage was
estimated at from $00,000,000 to SiU.OOO.OOO.
The report of the committee is anxiously
awaited. The general market was weak in
the late doalines , Distilling being the fea
ture , selling off 2 per cent on a vigorous bear
raid with a recovery of } ( per cent in the
final transactions. The market closed
heavy.
The Post says : Considering-tho general
feeling of pessimism which prevailed today
in AVall street , the stock market was
curiously a pathetic one. That professional
speculators after their late experiments
should bo unwillinc to take the lead in
active operations is not remarkable. But
for the llrmness with which the infesting
public holds to its secutities , few satisfac
tory explanations are vouchsafed. The news
of tl'e day. such us the great Union Pacific's
October decrease of $1,000,73. ) gross and
$555.110 net. hud no influence whatever.

1 FIIIIUV , Dec. 15.
The supply of both cattle and hoes BO far
, bis week lias bcoDjabout the same as last ,
jut sheep receipts' have fallen off nearly
5,000 head. So farth.'is . ' 'month compared
with last December. ' cattle receipts have in
creased about T.OOOJ.ran l sheep 0,000 head , ,
while hogs have fallen off 12,000.-
The general cattle market was slow , weak
'
and lower. There was a lack of really de
sirable beef steers , but a plethori of half
Tat and warmed'up stock. What suited the
killers sold early at very nearly steady
pncesbut on the other grades it was hit and
m'iss generally miss. Buyers , knowing
how unevenly the general run of cattle are
"killing out" now , have no recourse but to
buy it all as low as possible , and the result
is that the bulk of the offerings i selling
15c to ! J5u lower than a month ago. Fair to
good stPcrs weighing from 1,000 up to 1,470
Ibs. sold at trom V.K > to $4.50. but the gen
eral run of steerSjWhich weighed from 000 to
1.300 Ibs. , sold very slowly at from jil.Ii ; ) to
$3.80 , with scattering sales of inferior stuff
down to i. Business was on the uull and
dragging order throughout , but at the close
there was little of any consequence remain
ing unsold in ilret hands.
The cow market was hit hard. They constituted -
_ stituted nearly a third of the entire receipts
and with no outside comnutitiou buyers for
local nouses got a good many cheap cows.
Aside from la few early sales of good to
choice cornfed stock the market averaged
from IGc to " 5o lower than Thursdav. A
couple of loads of fancy cows and heifers
brought 1.05 and $3.75 , but asltle from these
fair to good stock sold largely at from ji.'J.'i
to f.'l.25 , with common and canning grades
at from $1.40 to $ 'J.15. Common largo to
choice veal calves sold at from $1.60 to $ ! > , or
about steady prices. Hough Block was in
liberal supply and lower. Poor to prime
bulls , oxen and stags sold at from 71.DO to ? 3.
The stocker and feeder trade also partook
of the general weakness. Neither the fresh
nor stale supplies wore large , but the coun
try demand was also decidedly slack. Good ,
smooth , fleshy feeders wore not qnotably
lower , but the weakness in the common
light rough stock cattle culminated today
In n 15o to Mo decline for the week. Trade
was decidedly sluggish nnd the volume of
business was unusually light. Good to
choice feeders are quotable at from $ ) to
$3.50 , fair to goon at from $2,75 to $3 and
common and stockers at from $2 to t'-.DO.

HOGS Receipts were fair and the general
quality of the offerinps was about up to the
average. Reports from Chicago wore In the
main favorable and sellers started in asking
good stiff prices. There was no outside de
mand and buyers for local houses , claiming
prices were too high compared with otl.er
western markets , proceeded to try to get
prices down a peg or two. It was a slow
process , but they succeeded. Early sales
were at prices weak to 5c lower than Thurs
day , but before the close buyers had pounded
out n big lOc decline. Fair to good Ifogs sold

DOUGLAS COUNTY SCHOOLS.
District UrtlcnrH Will Meet to Dlscmn tltn
Text Hook I'roblem.
The school ofHcers of Douglas county will
hold a convention at the court , house today
for the purpose of discusshifc the school
book problem , a question which hasngiir.led
their minds for somu time.
The last legislature passed a law , by the
terms of which the several districts of tlio
county were empowered to purchase tiie
text books for the use of the schools.
Shortly thereafter about all thu book con
cerns sent their agents to this state , where
they labored for weeks. When they left
they all had contracts , and in this
county alone some ten different pub
lishers had -got In their work. Tlio
result of this is that there bus been a
El-oat deal of confusion , asa pupil goiiiK from
ono district to another has been compelled
to secure an entirely new sot ol bookswhich
has interfered to a grout extent with the
progress oC the schools. Besides this , the
superintendent , states that , the division of
the trade has prevented the dealers from
handll'ifj all of the books and sending away
for them b : s caused long delays and a large
amount of expense.
Il is tlio intention of the school ofllcors to
agree upon some uniform scries of text books
and then adopt them for the use of all of the
country schools.
