Increase in the dealings on the Stock cx-
chnnco today which was entirely duo to
purchases for the London account , so mo
15,000 shares beitift purchased by the arbi
trage houses including St. Paul , Erie , Louis
ville & Nashville. Union Pacific , Kansas &
Texas preferred and Denver & Uio Grande
preferred.
A very active buying movement was de
veloped in General Electric. The last price
was the highest of the day and shows an ad
vance of U percent , In the final snles ot yes
terday. Sugar was freely sold during the
early dealings and'broke to 78Jjf. ex-divi
dend ol 3 per cent , a decline of i-y per cent.
The moving influence , was , of course , the
tariff , which it is claimed gives the German
rolinorsan Undue ad vantage over the Ameri
can Sugar Hoilnliifjcompany. There is , however -
ever , a well dolincd opinion in speculative
circles that the stock of the company is
being manipulated by insiders with a view
to use Its depreciation as an argument that
the proposed tariff schedule will work ma
terial injury to the homo sugar industry.
The net loss on the day was five-eighths
of I per cent. Chicago Gas was largely
dealt in and , after an early decline of live-
eighths ol 1 nor cent , rose \ % per cent on
the filling of orders to buy. a majority of
which came from the west. The stock wns
well supported during the afternoon and
closed within one-fourth of 1 per cent of the
top figures. Western Union suffered eatly
in the day from reports of decreasing earn
ings of the current quarter nnd when the
statement for the quarter ending with Sep
tember was published showing a decrease of
nearly $450,000 for that period there was a
still further decline , which the declaration
of the rezulat ; \ \ { per cent dividend did not
check. The decline from yesterday at the
lowest point touched wns 1 per cent.
In the Into dcallncs no mention was
mudo of decreasing earnings for this quar
ter , and this was used to rally the shares
three-fourths of 1 per cent. Chicago. Bur
lington & Qulncy rose three-fourths of 1 per
cent on good buying during the moruintr , it

peed business , but the closing gales showed
a reaction of one-half of 1 per cent.
