dull day on the Stock exchange/ / and there
were periods ot complete stagnation during
which absolutely no business was trans
acted. The result is that the total sales
of the day do not aggregate more thau hi a
brisk market would bo made in a single
hour , yet thcro was a llrm undertone to the
dealings and the changes of the day , though
slight , are generally in the advance column.
At the opening a llrm tone prevailed and
some moderate buying orders in the arbl-
traeo specialties came in from London ,
which , together with advices of a better
London market for American securities ,
helped the slug'cish upward movement. The
rise was merely fractional , except for Lead
preferred , which was sold up 1 per cent ,
and excepting this the improvement was
quickly lost. Before 11 o'clock another
advance had been recorded , Tobacco
and Lead preferred making additional
gains of 1 per cent. General Electric and
Colorado Coal it Iron also advanced 1 per
cent ana the general list from % to ? { per
cent. Then came ono of the stagnant pe
riods during which the voice of the stock
ticker was heard at but rare inteivals , but
toward noon there was * some activity in the
selling , Lead preferred losing all the early
improvement. National l.iuseed , ou the
contrary , was strong and advanced 8)4 per
cent.
During the early part of the afternoon the
transactions aud lluctuatlons wcro unim
portant except in ono or two instances. Bo-
lore 2 o'clock a fractional reaction set In and
the speculation was heavy until the lust halt
hour , when the trading bec.uno llrmer than
at anv otner tlnio during the day , an upward
movement developing which was held to the
close , the final prices being In many cases
at the highest of the day.
The concra ! list closed at an ndy.utco of }
to Ijf per cent.

over , weak , and yesterday's professional at

there has been very llttlo change In cattle
receipts. Hog supplies show un Increase of
nearly 2,000 head , nnd sheep nearly a,500
hand.
The supply of cattle was fairly liberal
mid. the otTcnlngs were , as usual , made up
largely of half fat natives and odds and
ends of rangers. Dressed beef houses were
about the only buyers , but as they all
wanted good cattle the market opened out
reasonably active and very nearly steady on
thcso grades , unit fair to cholca 1,000 to
1,400-lb , bcovcs sold ut from $1.25 to f3. For
the ordinary run of half fat and short fed
stock tliu tmu'Uet was In bad slutno. Sailors
took off lOo and 15o and then had lots of
trouble to ilnd buyers. Very fair 1,200 to
