"On tbo third day after the baltlo I
got down to the house. There was not
a board or rail of the fencing loft on
the placo. Not n chicken , pig , cower
or dog to bo found. The mules had
eaten up the orchard of 4-yoar-old trees
down to the stalks. The garden was
full of bottles and camp litter ; the
meadow of the hides r.nd olTal of the
beeves which had been shot down in
their tracks and dressed on the spot , as
meat , was needed. There stood the bare
shop , the Mouse full of wounded men and
the old barn , where General Sloctim had
made his headquarters. In front of the
barn bat a weary-looking , lone olHcer in

' The wounded in the house wore

Germans. They wore a queer lot. They
sang , cried , cursed , prayed , did every
thing , poor follows , as they lay thoio ;
sulToring and dying ; but chiefly they
drank beer , wagon loads of it , brought
from Milwaukee. They sent all thoit *

"Slum smulls as came from the fester

walls of the shop and house of an even
ing , and the night air was terrible.
Why did wo stay ? Why como' back ?
What else could wo do ? We had no
money to pay boardwo , had nothing ,
anda ; large fum'ily'ty ' care for. Wo had
bedn putting " "all our inonoy into the
placo. Wo mU&t sot to wdrk as fast as
wo could to fix it up and got ready for
the winter.
"Six weeks later they took the last of
the wounded away and let us Imvo the

spT'i'iig I got a cliutlco to titico u Mceked

lot the house to an old Dutchman , who
diil not seem to mind the smells. Nine
years afterward I tore all the woodwork

Chief Engineer Melville of the navy
, n a recent report makes a forcible plea
'or the giving of rank to the engineer
: orps of the navy , says Blue and Gray.
[ To claims that in modern naval warfare
the results must depend quite as much
.ipon the nerve and elllcienoy of the mou
in charge of the machinery as upon the
gallantry of the forces handling the
juns. Rapid maneuvering by means of
twin propellers and electrical steering
ipparatus has again brought forward
the ram as a weapon of olTouco , and made
skillful handling of a vessel no low a
factor in her elHcloney than the rapid
service of liar guns. Therefore , the de
partment of engineering has assumed
now dignity , and it Is only lining that
the men who devote their time to the
mechanical features of our naval forces
should be olTored some incentive beyond
the more pay attached to the service ,
and this may properly come in the way
of the conferring of rank. as
in the case of the men on deck. In the
natural order of things the now navy of
the United States should bo n growing
feature of our national development ,
and Its ranks , in every branch of the
borvieo , should bo recruited Irom the
best nnd brainiest sons of the republic ,
not only on the quarter deck , but down
below , where the throbbing engines
give life and elllcicncy to the huge mass
of steel. Wo are sure that in "wpite pf
the very just objection which exists in
this country to an undue multiplication
of titles , no one will disapprove llio sug
gestion made by Commodore Melville ,
It has our hearty'endorsement. We
look to our new navy und our gallant
tars to uphold the honor and. dignity of
pur country abroad , and all legitimate
incentives should bo olTorod to secure
ami maintain a high average of intelli
gence and ambition among the mou , not
only on the quarter dock , but in the en
gine room und on the berth deck as
well.

Considerable curiosity and not n litllo
anxiety have been excited among thu
employes of the Erie railroad by a
printed circular recently sent to them
from the headquarters of that cjmpany ,
buvs the New York Ifurald. Tha nlrnu-
hit- requires prompt answers to a num
ber of questions , which some of the oni-
ployos are disposedlo resent as closely
bordering on impertinence.
To the questions calling for a state
ment of the ago , height and weight ol
employes no objection is made , Somu
captious souls make tlio lacjonio romai-l :
that if a man does his work all right it
is nobdy's particular business how elder

to result in a great matrimnnial boom in
