THE OMAHA DAILY BEE : SUNDAY , DECEMBER 3 , 1S93-TWENTY IMAGES. Bmiooss Situation Shows Little During the Week , COLLECTIONS ARE STILL FAIRLY GOOD Jobbers Itoport nil Uneventful Week In All tint llolldiy Tenillitx to Iletluoo the Volume ot Trailo l > r iluce Mon Active. It lias boon n very uneventful wcok as re- pards trade in local Jobbing circles. Thcro Jias been u fair average business along tlio lines already noted , and nothing lias hap- liontnt to disturb Us oven tenor excepting the Thanksgiving holiday. Aa usual , the Intervention of a holiday had n tendency to reduce the volume of business , nnd then , too , It being the last of the month , a good many rotnll merchants wore too busy preparing for the coming of the now month to visit the market. There appears to bo a general complaint nil over thn country regarding the reduction in the volume of business consequent upon thnro being only ilvo Instead of six business days In thu wcok. The clearings at Omaha nnd till other points showed n heavy falling off. Omaha's bank clearings wore 41 per cent behind the corresponding week last iear , Minneapolis 44 , St. Paul M , Denver O'.i , KnnsnsCit.v4LandSt. Joseph 42 per cent , The Chicago bankers have Just announced that the rate of Interest on deposits will hereafter bo 3 per cent Instead ot 4 per eontt ns formerly. Omaha bankers say that any chnngo lowering tlio rate ot Interest on time deposit ! ) Is not contemplated by the cleaving house at the present tlmo. The matter wns talked about some tlmo ago , but was dls- po.scd of , nnd will not come up again until next summer at any rate. . I'rntluco Mm * The wholesale dealers In produce are about the only ones In the wholesale trade to de- rlvo any advantage from the Thanksgiving holiday. They always do n largo business , especially In dressed poultry. Thanksgiving week Is the heaviest of tlio year for dressed poultry dealers , and the Monday unit Tues day previous to the holiday are the busiest clays for the wholesale com mission receivers. The express and transportation companies have their hands full to deliver promptly nil tlio consign ments. Every year largo quantities of stock have boon received too Into for the holiday trade , and ouch have had to sell at much lower Jlgurcs than would have boon realized had the stock been received n day earlier , and this season is no exception , as cons Id crablo stock due Monday did not got In unti Tuesday and Wednesday. The Omaha market was pretty well cleaned up. especially on turkeys , but prices ruled low on till kinds of poultry. The crop of turkeys was very large this Reason in the west , and in anticipation of a largo supply commission merchants nd vised their shippers to operate very cau tiously and only on a low basis of cost , so that in some sections farmers would not nc cept the low figures bid by shippers timi Bpeculatoi-3 , preferring to hold their poultry for a later market. The Thanksgiving holiday is a week later this year than last which.should cause the quality to bo bette : ifanything , as every wcok at this period o tlio year shows an improvement. AS DUN SKKS IT. Klfcot ot Holidays on llnsliiois Some 1'or tlnont llcllectlmix. Air. W. II. Koberson , Omuha manager of K. 6. Dun & Co. , speaking of local trade , says : "Thanksgiving broke in upon the wcok nnd loft but ilvo days for business. In yvholcsnlo circles this means very generally only about three days of trade for the rea son that a largo number of the traveling mcu'cnmo in off tlio road ior Thanksgiving. It is the season of the year when contracts are renewed for the year to come , and many of the knights of the road are in the city Negotiating for the future. Of course those that are in town are not selling goods and the volume of sales is more or less affected by tho'fact. / "With Thanksgiving day came the first severe stor i of the year und this encour ages traders in nearly every line. Season able weather is very Important to business men. In fact , unseasonable weather is al ways bad for trade. The prospect now H that the winter has sot in in good' earnest and the winter trad e will bo trlsk all through December. Considerable prepara tion is being mailo for an active holiday business. Experience in former years has shown that no matter how hard times are people will keep up the good old custom of making Christmas presents. The Jewelers nnd dealers in similar lines nro particularly hopeful for the next three 01 four weeks , though , as a matter of fact , there has boon no activity in tlieirlii.es. lu former years a great many purchases for thp holidays were made in November. This year the trndo is very slack , There seems to bo very llttlo disposition to anticipate the Rift season. "In banking circles ndthliiR now is re- IKirted except that all bolluvo there is n allpht Improvomont. At the savings banks there Is n sllRht improvement of money botli \vcys. A great many people nro obliged to withdraw their savings ou account of their necessities. On the other hand , the moro thrifty nro returning to the savings batiks with thylr accounts. At each of the savings bunks during the past week n number of now accounts have bcon sUrtod. "Tho feeling-very generally now is that if concress will not promptly In regard to the tariff bill ono way or another business will begin lo res u mo Itsnormnl condition all over the union. If , however , them is to bo n long notation of the subject 11 m In the house nnd then In the senate it will bo dlfllcult to forecast what the effect upon trndo will bo. "Three months ago n millionaire in this city offered 10 percent Interest for mono ? with collateral In the shape of par stock nt 75 cents on the dollar , but could not In- dueo the party addressed to nd. vmico the money , During the past week the same man was offered money nt 0 percent en the snmo stock , stock to bu fatten at 100 cents on the dollar as collateral. Unfortunately for both par- tics , the conditions had chanced nnd the borrower could not use iho money to nuvan- tngo , ovou nt 0 per cent , although ho says ho could hnva made 200 percent if ho had been permitted to borrow the money ut 10 per oont a few mouths ago. This same goutlo- mun , whoso broad never fulls butter side down , IB known to hnvo mndo 118,000 or i0.- ! 000 In aide deals during the panic. "Ills not the common lauor that needs employment In Omuha so muohns the skilled labor , The fact is that common labor hits never been bottnr employed than now. The JayliiK' "i double track on the Missouri 1'acillo , the work on the bridge , the work nt Fort Crook and the public works hnvo been giving wages to several hundred men , und a jiart of these will bo continued right through ' the fold weather. The carpenters , the plumbers , the bricklayers , the stone masons nnd thu IIVM In other similar trades are the real sufferers. It Is hardly to bo expected that tbeso men can secure employment be fore spring. There appears to bo qultn a mo.vcment In the Union Stock Yards dbmpany stock. Several of our best known citizens who ure already hcnvy stockholders in that institu tion have been plcklmr up odd shares hero nud there for three months'and it Is reported I that the stock has advanced from S3 ceuls to tlX ! > . There Is quite a disposition growing up In spue of the hard times to Indulge inn llttlo speculation , and as n react Ion t always certain In this country I predict that with the opening of spring and a full money mar. k t there will be quite a good many now I enterprises , more or Ies speculative in char- [ nctcr , entered upon in this city. What > \ve neoU uow more thau anything else is little fearless Investment. It is not to be i expected that men who have been pinched for six mouths will suddenly become reckless , but it is reasonable to anticipate that those vrpohnve had their funds locked up and u&olois for a considerable period will bo- com * auite anxious to even up on the loss of Interest by Investments which pjomlso ex tra rewards. Active Speculation ou 'Chunge , but tlio Dcrtlliics Were Unsettled. Nnw YOUK , Dec. 1. There wns n very ac tive speculation on the Stock exchange today , but the dealings were unsettled. At Lho opening n Hrm fooling prevailed , nnd the first quotations were made nt an advance of V to Jf per cent. In the early dealings the market was llrmly hold , but realizing sales soon causc'J n fractional reaction , however , which wns quickly followed by un ndvanco of M to 2j < ? per cent. The announcement of the passing of the dividend on General Klcctrlc preferred brought on n selling movement hi the com mon stock of the company , which dropped 2J per cent , the general list sympathizing to the extent of 1 @ ! f per cent. Hock Island nud Sugar loading. Toward the eloso specu lation became Ilrmcr niut prices took nn upward turn , the llnnl dealings being effected at an improvement of 3 @l per cent , the tone of the market at tlio close being stroug. The principal changes of the day nro an advance of 1 } per cent in Southern Paclllc , 1 per cent in St. Paul & Omaha preferred , and a decline of 4 per cent in Uubb'or preferred , \ % per cent In General Electric and 1 per cent in Great Northern preferred. Compared with the final sales of Saturday a week ago , the clos ing prices of today show about as many stocks on the list of advances as of declines. Industrial shares which have made the widest lluctutxtions arc : I cad , preferred , 11J4 per cent ; Lead , common , 4 per cent ; Sugar , common , 'JJ4' per cent ; Sugar , pre ferred , 3 per cent ; DIstiUlntr , 3 % percent ; Cordage , common , 2 % per cent ; Cordngo preferred , 2J per cent ; Gonernl Electric and Edison Electric , 2' < per cent down. In the general list tno changes are con flned within narrower limits , the greatest improvement being in Oregon Improvement , ajf por' cent ; Denver & Ilio Grande , pro- _ f erred , 2) ) ' per cent , and the heaviest do "cl'.no in Northwest. 2 4 per cent. The Post says : Perhaps the bnst dcscrip tlon of today's bank statement would be to say that it reflects the stock market operations ations of the weak. , There has been liberal buying of securities' , partly speculative In chnrhctctv This might bo guessed from the $4.4'J4'JOO ' increase in loans. The surplus reserve , how ralscii tdHh'e monumental sum. of $07,000,000 , means dullness In the general trade nnd a money market of unprecedented cheapness , which again foreshadows great demand for good investment securities. Today's 'stock market i-.noods no extended comment. I It was strong , even though prices for many active railway stocks yielded fractionally. That some of , the speculative leaders of the week would sell today to secure their profits and that they would choose for the tlmo the moment of the bank statement's publication , were foregone conclusions. Next week hopefulness or despondency may all the inoro easily be made to order on the stock exchange. The week has ended very ap propriately with a rapid recovery in Sugar stock. It will bo seen from the foregoing figures that Omaha is more thau holding her own , Chutigo for tlio Hotter Nutuit. Early in the week the cattle market was quiet nnd rather woalc , but llcht supplies thp past few days have changed the aspect of affairs considerably , and prices have ad vanced substantially on all desirable killers. Tlicro is little now in the situation. Aside from tno gooct to cholco beeves the demand from slaughterers has been and continues to bo very indifferent , as pcoplo are letting game , poultry and oysters take the plnco of boot to a great extent Just at present , and no material change is expected till after the first of the year. The range season is practically over. Open weather continued it longer than usual , but storms in the northwest have about stopped shipments from that , direction and only u few straggling bunches are received. The big bulk of the offerings are made up of half fat nnd short feu stocl : , cattle that huvo been on feed thirty to ninety days and buyers fairly despise it , so that sellers , un less the supply happens to bo short , realize very unsatisfactory prices. The markut today was good and lively. Re ceipts were not heavy and ttio demand from all sources was very good. There was a f reo movement and prices for all useful grades of steers ruled strong at Friday's advance. Prices , of course , llko the quality of the offer ings , are very uncertain and uneven , but on an average lOc to 15c bolter than on Wednesday. Some very fancy , finished 1,453-lb. Christmas beeves , better than any thing soon hero this year , topped the mar ket , bringing $5.1)0. ) the highest price paid in over twelve months. Fair to very good 1,100 to 1,450-lb. beeves sold ut from SI. 10 to $4.75 , while the under grades sold all the way from $3 to ? 4. The snow storm delayed several trains , but the cattlu sold freely and the close found very few in first hands. C.Tho cow market was active and stronger all nround. Probably a fourth of the offer ings were cows und mixed lots , and with all local houses in the Held after thorn tlioy were not long in changing hands. Choice to fancy cows'and heifers sold at from $3 up to $3.50 , with fair to uood butchers' cows at from $2.20 to ? . ' 2.70 and common and canning grades nt from f 1.25 to ? 2. The calf market was stronger. Prime veals sold up td"$5.23 nnd very common stock brought $3. Choice fat stags sold ui | to $3.50 , with poor stuff as low as $1.40. Business In feeders was not very rushing today. It never is on Saturday nnd the snow storm did not help matters any. Yard traders did' most of the buying , paying good ll"m prices for the desirable offerings and not caring to take the poor , thin , light and rough stuff tit any prico. Good to cholco feeders are quoted at HI to SU.GO , fair to good at $2.70 to $3. with inferior to fair grades at $2.10 to $2.05. JlcprcRcntatlva Suing. imrasr.u nnr.p. No. Av. I'r. No. Av. Notwithstanding the omission of ono day's ( Thursday's ) receipts the supply of hopa was nearly ii.OOO heavier than last wcok. At Chicago the increase was oven inoro marked. This fact , nnd probably this nlono , will ac count for a 20a drop in prices dlirln ? the week. Packers Insist on lower prices. Provisions for January delivery nro soiling on the basis of M.75 boss , so that in the vcrv nature of things hogs must go downer or provisions up. With no spooulatlvo support - port there Is llttlo prospect of provisions going up , while with any Increase of sup. plies of hogs prices are bound to po lower. This Is the situation In n nutshell. If the numucr of hogsnvmlnblo in the next CO days was even * approximately knpwn by any one the markets would soon adjust themselves - solves on that lusts. Hoports from nil sources are i-oulllctliig and every ono Is grop ing in the dark. The vcck closes with n fairly liberal sup ply. With lowcro.tstorn Inarliets , buyers pro ceeded to trytoillltholrorders na fie to 10o decline. Boilers nro never anxious to hold hogs over Sunday , but they were also un willing to accept so heavy u cut nnd trading was slow. Thu shipping demand wns hotter than expected , In fact , about the host ot the week , nnd this fact iviusoil the market to im prove ns the morning advanced , particularly on the light and butcher weight grades for which the demand was strongest. The heavy hogs , especially the very heavy hogs , were slow sale throughout and closed moan. Light and butcher weight hogs sold largely at $ .V.u ; and $ VJo , while the heavy and mixed packers brought $5. in nnd fo.'JO. A load or two of prime heavy weights brought STi.ttS nnd low mark for rough packers was $5.10. About everything finally sold tlio milk nt SU5 ami Xi.'M against fft.'JO to Ri.lW Friday and fVtl ; ) to fTi.33 ono wcok ago today. ItPiimciitittlve .Snlcs. No. Av. 8h. I'r. No. Av. Ph. I'r.
