There Is no record of It in the nrchloves
nt Washington , anil General Sherman ,
who ordered the attack , Ignored it in
his ofllclal report of the Atlanta cam
paign and innkes no mention of It In his
memoirs , writes Cuntaln T. J. Mni'koy
In the Now York Advertiser.
As it was the most desperate assault
mndo by his troops In that memorable
campaign and subjected them to fearful
slaughter , through , a falluro tluo Hilully
to tactical errors , It canld hurdly have
'boon obliterated from his memory by
the utter glory of his far march from
the blue mountains to the blue sea.
it was reported , however , by General
Joseph K. Johnston , whocotniunmlod the
confederate army opposed to that of
General Sherman.
The battle was fought on May 127 ,
18 ( > 4 , and was brought on by a move
ment on the part of the Fourth corps ,
commanded by General O' . O. Howard ,
to turn the right of the confudorales
and take their position in reverse.
The confederate forces consisted of
Clcburnu's infantry division and
Wheeler's dismounted cavalry division ,
They wore entrenched along the crest of
n low ridge about two miles west of the
town of Dallas , Ga.
The attacking force comprised four
brigades , each composed of from seven
to nine full regiments , thus aggregating
the numerical strength of three ordinary
divisions. The attack , instead of being
made in column according to the skil
fully devised plan of the corps com
mander , the brigades moving within
easy supporting distance , was a series of
dctatchcd assaults , the brigade that
opened the battle being unsupported ,
and each advanced at long intervals
after the other was driven back.
The brigade of General W. 13 , ITtt/en ,
an ideal soldier and the true hero of the
battles of Stone River and Mission
Hldgo , advanced first to the assault.
For nearly an hour it battled with a
valor and Fortitude worthy of its renown ,
under a lire as terrible as any that sol-
diora over faced. While 'retreating
under orders , firing resolutely as it fell
back , the color sergeant of the 12-Hh
Ohio , the regiment on its right , com
manded by that typical American ollicor ,
Colonel Oliver H. Payne , stepped
from the ranks and planted the
colors of the regiment as n rally
ing signal within twenty yards of
the confederate Hue. As ho did so ,
and before ho could remove his hand
Irom the staff , ho was shot dead and the
colors fell with him , their folds parti
ally covering his body. Another soldier
of the same regiment then advanced ,
and as ho stooped to lift the colors ho
too was instantly killed.
A third rushed forward to save the
treasured ensign , mid mingled his
heart's blood with that of his devoted
comrades.
A fourth soldier from the line of the
121th Ohio then advanced at double
( juick toward the fatal spot. Ho was a
corporal , wearing his sword , but with-
out his rifle , and apparently about 20
years of age. Ho had a tall , lithe tiguro
and his face was handsome despite the
powder stains upon it. As ho reached
tlio point where tlio colors lay many o
the confederate soldiers called out to
him to surrender. IIo smiled at the
summons and taking oft his cap with his
loft hand waved it toward thorn , and
then bent down to grasp the color stall
with his right. Many a deadly bead was
drawn upon him by the unerring marksmen -
mon , whoso rillos wore gleaming in tlio
sunlight not sixty feet away , whc-n Cap
tain William .Nowcll of the Fourth
Texas Killcs , in front of whoso company
the fallen Hag lay , called out in a clear ,
-metallic voice that rang along the line :
"Don't shoot ! For God's sake , men , lot
tlio bravo follow take the colors ! "
His appeal was heeded and , although
the line continued its tire upon tlio re
tiring union troops , the during corporal
was considerately spared , and bore the
blood-dyed ilag back to the ranks of his
regiment.
1 venture to say , as a diligent student
of military history , that the
lofty chivalry displayed by both
sides on that occasion has
been illustrated in war only by Ameri
can soldiers. With u like chlvalrio
spirit , a few weeks later , the Forty-first
Ohio infantry , while on picket duty ,

desort'ionBtiys tliq New York Sun.
Some facts bearing on this subject are
contained in the reports of the ollicors o (
the inspector general' : ) department
Colonel Hey ! , , in the Department of the
Missouri , reports lSt ; desertions there
for tlio last liscal year in place of 140 the ,
year before , being an increase of about
l3 ! per cent , although there has been a l--l
- -
( Increase intho avurugo enlisted 4

cause for desertion was unknown in t)4 )
eases , while in 118 it was put down an
"general dissatisfaction , " and in 20 more
us "to odcapo trial and punishment. "
The remaining known cases were HO
miscellaneous us to give little clew to
the reason of the increase.
Major Yt'oom , Department of Texas ,
reports nn increase of desertions there ,
and thinks "heroic treatment" the rem
edy for the ovil. Lieutenant Colonel ,
Bacon , Department of the Pltitto , shows
110 desertions there against 70 last year ,
being an increase of 118 per eont. IIo
recommends the repeal of the law pro ?
hibiting the enlistment of privates who
have served ton years ; also the paying"
of a higher Interest than -1 per cent on
holdiors' deposits of money witli the gov
ernment , and finally , u return to bi

Major Hamilton of the Department ol
the Columbia shons an increase in do-
Bcrtlons from 17. ) lust year to 218 now.
That is about iT per cent. For I'M out )
of tlio 218 desertions it was found 1ml
ponhiblo to assign uny cause. Of the

the increase in desertions had begun before

connected with the extent of thoolTonco.
Ho questions "whether prison discipline

Lieutenant Colonel Young , Fourth
cavalry , commanding at JolTorson bar-
racks/puys that most of the deserters at
that point uro recruits who have on-
lihted fraudulently and fear trial.
Colonel Curlton , Eighth cavalry , thinks
it would bo well to Bond recruits at once

olllcerii think that ono trouble is that
too many people nymputhl/.o wltli and
shield tlio deserters , as if they wore cs-
