the mod part weak , anil closed lower by lf c

and ribs.
Wheat opened with a bolter feeling , De-
rcmbor sUrtlng at OO i1. V above yester
day's closing. The tlrst reports showed
light receipts In the nnithwcst and the price
ndvaticcd. Later a correction VMS received
from Dulutti stating that receipts were 7Sr >
earn Instead of 240 , as first reported , but the
correction was received with so much in
credulity that the.prico , instead of declining1 ,
made a further slight pain. H was Im.iRlncd
that some ono at Dulntli , with Interest In
ilcpresslng pri-'es , was working the report
of receipts tbero with that end In view. A
dispatch apparently emanating from the
Duluth Hoard of Trade , us a body , read :
"Reports of ears -on track will ho discon
tinued ; reports of Inspection will be fur
nished only. " Tlio export clearances wcro
light , causing a temporary reaction , but the
rains now prevailing hero und through ttio
west and northwest led to expectation of
lighter receipts and the price continued to
climb. Considerable short wheat was said
to have been covered feY the northwest by
Arthur Orr. and with iho linn closing of
cables local shorts succumbed to the bull at
tack und covered freely , closing the day
with a decided gain. December climbed ' 40

With moderate receipts , light estimates
for tomorrow and in sympathy with corn ,
oats scored a gam. Provisions opened lower ,
but with a simcwhat brisk trade early ad
vanced slightly. Heir receipts of 2,000 head
moro ilian the estimate was a bearish inllu-
encc. and the gain was moro than lost , and
pork , lard and HtH closed lower.

NEW YOIIK , Nov. 21.--Wall street has not
experienced u day hi many weeks In which
the speculation on the Stock exchange com
bined strength with activity lu such a
marked decree as It iliil loilay. It was
practically a hull market all day , for though
there were occasional reactions , there was
no depression anil each hall In the upward
movement seemed only to give now buoy
ancy to the dealings anil borvcvl to attract
now purchasers , and while Sugar was the
stock most largely dealt In , the buying was
well distributed through the pencral list ,
other of the loading Industrials , the
grangers , Western Union and Ucadiiig also
coming In for n largo share of attention.
The buying in Sugar is said to have been
largely for the account of a local hear , who
not only Ueslroil to cover , hut also to ac
cumulate a load of long stock. It is saiil
private advices from Washington saj the
changes in the larllT will not be to any ex
tent unfavorable to sugar rclltiing interests.
The course of the stock was up illl day , openIng -
Ing at % ' . . ! and closing at 'JtJ1 , ttie last being
the best prlco of the ( lay. The roaclions dur
ing its great climb never exceeded * { per

smaller fractious. Thu preferred shares
rose - per cent on sales of loss than 500
shares. The other Industrials shared more
or less in the upward moVe , except Cordaeo
preferred , which fell off 2'j ' percent , while
the common stock rose'J'j ' , per cent , revers

Lead common ' < pet1 cent , Tobacco 1 per

trio % per cent.
DislillitiK was sustained durimr the after
noon by the announcement that the presi
dent was opposed to an income tax , which
was regarde.l as favorable to an increase in
the spirits tax as a counter proposition.
Western Union was bougbt freely on reports
of government control of teleirraph lines.
The * grangers were in good demand and
tlieir prospects were not injured by the
declaration of the regular dividend In North
west common unit preferred mid St. Paul &
Omaha preferred. The closing figures were
the highest touched ami showed an advance
of 1'4 per cent lu Northwestern and St.
Paul , X poi1 cent in St. Paul & Omaha , Of

The Post says : There- has been prevalent
a notion that owing Io incidental lluctua-
tions , thecourse of the recent slock market
has been strongly downward. So far as concerns -
corns the general list this is not true. The
market's tendency since the currency legis
lation passed to break up into independent
groups , lias often been noted in this column
und there are sections of the market which
for obvious reasons have declined. But the
number thus affected has been small. Sug.ir
certitlcates. for instance , have fallen short
0 points since the opening of November ,
General Electric. 10 per cent , Collon Oil ,
G per cent , und Distilling certificates , 4 per
cent. But if Ihese slocks be excluded
from the reckoning and with them
ono or two others , such as r/uUvillo and
New Enirlaiid , which wcro depressed by
special influences , most people would bo as
tonished to discover how close are present
prices to tno opening quotations of the
month. The er.ingcr stocks , for which a
collapse of the most serious character had
been predicted , are ruling now within a
fraction of the last October prices. Uoday's
market merely served to de..ioustruio Hie
force of Iheio various coimideralions. A
movement , rather moro spirited than usual ,
to bid up the prices started a score of recent
sellers to buying uaeu their slocks , und Iho
movement , once started , for u time con
tinued of its own momentum.

Hccolpts for the iw'st t'.vo days , compared
with the flrst iwq'tiayi } of last week , show
an increase of atout. ,1.501) ) cattle anil 500
nogs , while sheep , h.iyo fallen off about 500
head. " , '
The cattle market was very dull. Ripe
beeves , bath natives and westerns , were in
good demand and'stroag , but they were also
mighty scarce. JjL'hU and oilier markets
have bseu surfeited \vithconimon shortfed
cattle and tail-end rangers and the natural
result lias been a break in values. Dullness
in the feeder trade has also contributed to
weaken the market , and cattle that were
not fat sold lc to Lie lower than the close
of last week. Mtiturail native beeves at4.00
to $5.25 were quotably strong , but the
general run of stuff at from ? Ji.iO : up to fcl.lS
was weak and unevenly lower. There \vero
some westerns hero peed enough to sell
readily at 1 rout $3.70 to VJ.S3 , but cattle on
the Texas order sold badly at around W.2."i to
1.3. ! ! Business was dull throughout , and nt
the close n good many common cattle wcro
unsold.
The cow trade was slow and prigei lOc io
lrC lower all around. Offerings were liberal
and the demand already ovcrsupplicd. The
bulk o tne fair to good butchers , ' Htuff
cliaugcd hands at from J' ' i0 ! to $2.50. Veal
calves were steady , helling up to $ .1 and
common large stock was lower , selling uown
to SI. .Bulls and oxen were generally a shade
easier , selling around f 1.10 to J2.50.
Business in feeders was all but dead.
Largo stocks on hand and a very restricted
country demand had a tendency to give
traders the blues. Prices were liardlj < iuot-
ably lower , but thov ought to bo low enough
to bring buyers. The feeling was very nc.nk
quolcd at from i.SU to $ ) . ; { ( ) : fair to good at
.from $2.50 to Si.SO , with inferior to fair
grades at from $2 to $2.40 ,
