Kncouragcd by light receipts in the northwest -

for December and May wheat atthe opsnlug.
The prieo was evened up a trtflo , but Pard-

day wcro estimated at over 1.000,000 bu. ,

from New York. The seaboard clearances
wcro comparatively light , there was little
encouragement In cables and reports said
that Russian wheat -was being offered nt
prices that would materially hurt American
exports. With all thii against It nnd but
very llttlu bullish news , the tnarhut declined

NEwYoitK , Nov. 10. The departure for
Europe of Assistant Treasurer Uonrad N.
Jordan , accompanied by ox-Secretaryiof the
Navy D. F. Tracy , revived the reports which
were current some tlmo aso that the govern
ment was negotiating a $100,000,000 loan in
London. Although denied at the subtrcas-
ury , whore It was stated that Mr. Jordan
was or. leave of absence to attend to private
business , the Incident was used to bull the
market. The prospective bond Issue was
accepted ns lavorablo to speculation in
values. A covering movement was the re
sult and there was also some buying for the
long account , which imparted a stronp tone
to the early dealings. It did not take long ,
however , for tha street to realize the Im
probability of the bond story and then the
traders took iho other side of the market.
Humors unfavorable to General Electric
coming to hand that stock w-us hammered
down 4 per cent. It was first stated , that
the company's books have been examined in
the Interest of a party of stockholders , and
had disclosed certain disagreeable facts , and
this being denied it was asserted that the
stock pledged * for a loan was being liqui
dated and that an amalgamation with the
Westinghouse company was about to bo con
summated on terms more favorable to the
latter concern than to General Electric.
When the pressure to sell was removed the
stock recovered 1 per cent.
The general market was.not seriously af- '
footed by the raid on General 'Electric , and
about 11 o'clock a good many buying orders
were sent in to the board , which had the
effect of advancing quotations } $ to 1J per
cent , Manhattan , New Jersey Central , Sugar
and Cot-dago being most prominent in the
upward movement. Toward noori the market
became quite stagnant , and in the absence
of buyers prices generally sagged off a frac
tion , aua Manhattan dropped 2J per cent.
There was a fractional recovery about 11
o'clock , followed quickly oy a partial reac
tion , but during the last hour a firmer tone
prevailed , uccomDanled by an Improvement
ranging to \ } { per cent , a small fraction of
which was lost In a few instances In the final
sales , but the general market cluscd firm nt
an advance on the day of from } { to 2 per
cent , the latter in Hubbor common ; \yt per
cent in thn preferred and Nashville. Chat
tanooga ; 1 % per cent In Cordage and Cana
dian Pacific ; l } { per cent in Novr Jersey
Central , and I per cent In Cotton OH , To
bacco , Minneapolis &St. Louis preferred and
ICauawha & Michigan. Some few shares
showed a decline compared with the final
sales of yesterday , notably General Electric ,
2 % percent ; Manhattan.yt per cent , and
Pittsburgh Cincinnati' , Chicago & St. Louis ,
1 per cent. The preferred stock of the
Peninsula Car company sold nt 68 , the last
previous sale , made on September 18. having
been at 92J < f.
The Post says : , When the stock market
opened today the buyers wcro moro pressing
than the sellers , and. prices advanced.
Trivial incidents may servo for guiding
forces In such a market , and some use was
made this morning of the announcement
that the United States treasurer at Now
York would visit Europe. This was as
sumed by board room gossip to mean n gov-
oi-uinont bond issue , and such a move Is
looked on as a factor for bettor prices.
Whatever may bo thought of this reason
ing , it encouraged numerous speculators
to cover Bliorts , and for an hour or two the
market rallied. An attaol ; on General
Electric checked this movement and at
tracted aelllng of this particular stock by
operators , among whom the word had passed
that unfavorable news regarding this com
pany was about to bo announced. The sellIng -
Ing , thouirh for the moment hoivy ; , was any
thing but confident , for every Intelligent ob
server knows that news may some day be
come uubllc on this stock which Wall street
would take as favorablo. At the close the
tone was strong throughout , especially in
the Industrial group. One notable advance
was that in Louisville , concerning which in
formation now appears to show that the
Chesapeake , Ohio . . Southwestern purchase
was by no moans a bad strouo of business ,
but why. If so , the details ami purposes
should have boon officially couccmled , ns
thouzh the Louisville managers were
ashamed of It remains n mystery ,

HOGS Receipts were comparatively liberal -
oral ; iu fact , they have not been exceeded
this month. The market wus demoralised.
Advices from Chicago wcro of the most
bearish character , and whllo all local
houses wanted hogs , they wanted them at
away down prices. The was scarcely any
inquiry for shipping or speculative account.
Nearly 0,000 hogs today , and an increase of
over 5.000 this week , wus more than the
market could stand , and prices dropped from
16c to 25o on all grades , heavy packing
grades suffering the most. Good to
choice butcher weight and heavy hops sold
largely at 85.45 and ? o.50 , while the heavy
packers and common light mixed
stuff went atfrom $5.30 to ? 5.40.
The market weakened as the morning
advanced and closed up very mean , but with
practically ovcrything out of first h.tnas.
The Dig bullrof the fair to good hogs ot all
weights sold at $5.40 and $5.45 , as against
So.GO und $5.05Vcdncsday and ? 5.90 to $0 a

some time that an extra session would ba
called , but this is the first time the Rovurnor
