CntCAOO , Nov. IS. Covering by shorts , reports -
ports of drouth and lighter northwestern re
ceipts favored wheat today , and despite
many bearish Influences Doeombor closed
J chltslicrthau yoslorJay. Corn ruled firm
on light receipt * -nnd small DHL-rings , and
oats gained 'fo on corn's firmnnss. Pro
visions took a revcrao course > to that of the
grain marlcot , notwithstanding thu small re
ceipts of hogs. Hop products Avero weak ,
pork scored u break of Wc ) , lard nnd ribs Ifa.
Wheat opened near yesterday's ilgures
nnd for the llrst half hour showed an up
ward tendency. Uccolpts In the northwest
, were light and drouth was reported In the
winter wheat belt. But weaker cables
caused a reaction and llradstruet's re
port showing a heavy Increase In
United Stales stocks , combined with
smaller export clearances , caused a
break , nnd December wheat went to
Wfc. Near the close covering by shorts
caused n reaction , nml with moderate buy
ing by Walker and Wren , helped the market
to a decided Improvement nt the close. It
was said Uryant bought 50,000 bu. of May
wheat nt fiSc , aim Unit n lot of wheat was
covered for tin 1'ardrldgo & Smith account
before the close. December opened at yester
day's Ilgures , from iWKc to Olc , sold UP % c ,
reacted from Jfo to % c. climbed from % < i to
} ( o to the close.
Torn hoenn firm at. yesterday's urlccs on
light receipts , and some of the he.iv.v local
aborts covered freely. Honoris from the
country that farmers are reluctant to sell
their corn at current prices also acted as ti
( tiHtiilnlnir inllucnco. Offerings were light.
May opened at 4lc , rose } c , calncd and lost
J c several times , rose o nbovo the opening ,
lost it , rallied and closed at 41 ? c , J o tibove
yesterday's close.
Oats followed corn In its flucluulions , with
very little trade. Harry Scull bought 100-
000 bu. . supposed to bo for a short account ,
and this helped to flrin up the market. Alny
started at llll c , where it closed yesterday ,
gained V. lost ' c , gained from ife to > ' o
and closed utilise.
Provisions opened at a slight advinco on
tniallcr receipts than oxnccted , but on free
selling by Hately and Uoloson and others
prices broke badly. Compared- with last
night January Pork Is 45c lower , January
lard 15c lower nnd January ribs 12)is lower.

New YOIIK , Nov. IB. A duller or loss In
teresting day 1ms not boon experienced on
the Stock cxchango lu mouths than was to
day ; in fact , the only activity w.is among
the rutuor mongers , whoso fecundity wis
abnormal. And as usual the reports put in
circulation \vcro Intended to dcorcciato
values , and though in most c.iscs speedily
denied , served the nurposo of thu authors to
make quirk turns on the short side of. the
account. But In spite of all the efforts of
the bear traders to establish u lower range
of values in the face of an Inactive -
active market , n remarltaoly firm
undertone characterized the dealings ,
nnd in making UD the balances for the
day a greater number of shurcs wore placed
in the column of advances than in the de
crease columns. The reason for this is to
bo found in the timidity of the shore inter
est , which is now disposed to leave its lines
long outstanding nnd secies to secure its
profits by covering at each moderate decline.
The purchases for this account , supple
mented bynow buying , oven though In sipall
volume , serve to restore values , and as the
murkot in its present kmnper is more sensi
tive to u purchislng than to u selling move
ment it requires a lighter volume of. busi
ness to move the market up than to scud it
down. The hours uro not , therefore , doing a
very profitable business la the market as it
stands and they do not scom.to consider the
conditions ripe for a moro vigorous and nec
essarily more risky campaign.
In the early dealings today an attack was
made on Manhattan on the strength of a
report that to provide funds for neces
sary repairs consolidated bonds hold in the
company's treasury would have to be sold ;
the shares yielded - } per cent , but speedily
recovered all but % per cent or the loss ,
only a very small amount of long stock being
bought out , all of which" was readily ab
sorbed. An attempt was made to frighten
holders of Louisville 4& Nashville by the
circulation of a story allccoct to have
como from London , to the effect that
several of the directors intended to
resign. This was denied at the company's
oftico , and a report that the Chesapeake ,
Ohio & Southwestern deal had been declared
off was denied on the authority of Mr. Bel-
mom of the Louisvillu & Nashville directory.
Neither canard had an appreciable effect on
the stock. Western Union WHS sold down
1 % per cent on a renewal of the reports of
decreased earnings , and it was rumored that
a combination had boon formed to boar the
stock. When the pressure to sell was re
newed in thn afternoon a recovery of 1 per
tout was made. The Industrials were
raided on private dispatches from Washing
ton suggesting unfavorable tariff changes.
Sugar yielded \ % per cent , Cottou Oil pre
ferred , 1 per cent , nnd Cordage preferred , 4
percent , the latter being unfavorably af
fected oy the anticipation of n bad state
ment from the receiver. Union Pacific hula
up well under the heavy decrease In the Oc
tober earnings and actually closed il small
fraction above yesterday. The c-cneral market
kot was irregular and unsettled all day ,
fluctuating frequently between strength and
weakness , but in the main making toward
bettor Ilgures. At the close a fairly steady
tone prevailed and the active list was cen-
erally a fraction higher than at yesterday's
closing , while Nashville , Chattanooga & St.
Louis showed an advance of 3j < f per cent and
Minneapolis & St. Louis \g per cent. The
shares which recorded the heaviest de
clines , not already noted , are Now York
Central , Canada Southern , l } { percent ; St.
Paul preferred , \yt per cent ; New Jersey
Central , 1 % per cent ; Michigan Central. 3
liar cent , and Ureeu Bay & Wlnona seconds ,
subscription pala , 2 % per cent.

Receipts for the past three days , as com
pared with the llrst half of last week , show
an Increase of about 1,000 cattle and 3,000
hogs , while sheep receipts have fallen off
fully 3,500 , head.
There was little that was new about the
general cattle market toJay. Receipts were
somewhat heavier than they have boon for
the past ten days and the quality of the
offerings showed no particular change. The
rather liberal offerings produced a weaker
fooling , but with a goad general demand all
doelrablo beef cattle met with it ready sale
at strong prices. Pair to good 1,100 to
1,350-lh. cornfed steers sold at from $4 5 to
M.70 und fair to choluo western rangers
readily sold at from UO upto 1. Half-
fatted natives und westerns that ucro
neither good enough for killers nor feeders
were hi poor demand and sold slowly at
shaded prices , Natives of this character
weighing ull the way from 1)00 ) to 1,800 ibs.
sold at from 81.30 to $3.85. There wan a
peed , firm tone to the trade for anything fat
and n good and reasonably early clearance
wan effected.
The cow market was very active and generally -
orally stronger , Tlioro wereclosa to 00 loads
on sulu , but in addition to thu usual active
dcnuuid from local houses both Morris nnd
Armour of Chicago had buyers in the yards
after supplies , Qpipmou to prime cows
nnn heifers sold it uu extreme range of from

of the fair to gooj stuff. Calves ut from 2
to ft.DO were fully steady and the same was
true of rous-'h stock at from tl.OO to J2.80.
The feeder trade pcomod to bo lacking in
life and suu p.and prices , if any tiling , were a
shade lower. Supplies were excessive , and
aside from a few country buyers and sellers
thd demand was not heavy. UooU.0 uholco
feeders uro quoted at f rom $1.83 to jy.OO.
f air to good at from ? 2 75 to Ki , 10 , with In

Hoas Receipts were fairly liberal , an in
crease so fnr this week over last of 11,000
head. Trie general quality of the offerings
was not very good. Heavy receipts Caused
a rather wc.ik feeling early , and opening-
sales were at prices steady to 5o lower than
Tuesday. The demand was tjood from all
sources , and that , with more encouraging
ne s from I ho oust , caused a stlffnninir of
values us the morning advanced , and some
of the later sulesi were strong to a nickel
higher. The general windup , however , was
very weak , owing 10 the bud break in pro
visions and hogs at Chicago. Prices ranged
from ? 5.f > 0 and $5.55 for common light mixed
stuff up to J5.70 and jr .7i > for choice heavy
and outcher weight loads. As on the two
preccdlnij days , the big bulk of the hogs
sold at $5.00 ami $5.05. A week airo today
the bulk of the trading was at i'o.SO and
$5.85. Representative sales :
