CIIICAOO , Nov. U. Wheat lost Ic today on
a hcav.v Increase In northwestern country
elevator stocks , heavy northwestern receipts ,
an unexpected Increase in United rotates
stocks , small rxport clearances and free
telling.
Corn \\ns weak , but less radically so tliati

Tor ribs.
Wheat opened near yesterday's < -loMng
figure , but Immediately began to decline.
North western receipts continued heavy.
The stocks In elevators In Minneapolis ,
Diilnlh and In the Interior back of those
places were reported to show an agpresa'to
Increase last week of : i'S8.000 liu. and this
completely offset the reports of smaller
farmers' deliveries. Operators who have
bought on the better foelini-'of yesterday he-
Ban to unload and the price continued
to go tloun. The report tjial Bnulstrcct's
statement will Increase the United States
stock tomorrow by over 4,000.000 bu. was
another depressing factor. Some btij ing of
shorts caused temporary reaction , but It
was n bearish Influence , small export clear
ances and discouraging cables continuing.
The general liMidenoy of the market was
downward. December opened whore it

siderable drop from the opening price thuro

tained for a Unio , hut the prlco finally
yielded to the extreme weakness of wheat

long stuff and corn's weakness affected it.

Nuw YORK , Nov. 14. The assignment of
Thurber-Whyland & Co. , announced today ,
'
made no particular Impression on the Now
York markets , having been more or less dis
counted In well Informed-commercial circles ,
owing to the protracted depression in tlio
value of poods as well as the volume of
transactions , coupled with the difllculty lu
making collections and supplementing the
silver panic last summer.
The market opened with less animation
than usual , despite the fact that the granirer
roads hud agreed to maintain rates during
the winter , which could not bo looked upon
otherwise than in a fuvorahlo light. The
changes In the list at the opening were very
sllclit , uud in the early dealings fractional
iluct nations were made on both sides of the
account. But the speculation boon warmed
up under the inilucnce of n good buying
movement In Sugar and New England ,
prices advanced from * & to U per cent , the
two stocks named leading. The advunco" in
duced sales of Now England , re
sulting In a reaction of 1 per cent ,
which icxtcndcd to the general list , and
was followed by a steady upward movement
ranging from # to lj per cent , in which
granger stocKs were most prominent , The
higher level was not maintained very long ,
Manhattan dropping a per cent and Louis
ville ft Nashville 1 } per cent. The other
iieciincs were unimportant , some thirty
minutes before noon the market became
active , London wus u small buyer , a Bur
lington & Qulncy dividend had been de
clared and room traders were mainly on the
bull side. The improvement led to realiza
tions of profits , which cnc6ur.igcd the bears
to attack values and before 1 o'clock the
market wns going down hill again.
Tlio depression continued throughout the
afternoon , merely because there were no
strong buyers in tl.o field , while there were
a number ot sellers anxious to imuto a turn
Heaviness was the prevailing tone to the
close , at which the depreciation In prices
had ranged to ! % per cent compared with
thu llnal sales of yesterday , Cordage com

The I'ost says ; Yesterday's stock market
was ouo of the pendulum's downward
swings. This morning tlio motion was once
more upward , though a dculiuo in prices had
begun again before the afternoon had far
advanced. There would ijulto probably
have been uu upward reaction ut the start
today , even had thuro been no ninvs to en-
courtteo buying. At it happened , however ,
thuro was some actual food for encourage
ment. The Diirlligtou & Qulncy directors
gathering in Boston declared the full < iuar-
terly dividend , uu action which fulfilled last
week's expectation und > vhlch , it may bo
hoped , was Justified by the company's liiuin-
clal outloou. Of much Importunco wus the
news that granger railways had entered on u
compact to maintain rates through the
winter senion. This is a move to chock such
u rate demoralization ns wus threatened by
the close of WoiId'a fair traitlo. As usual of
late , the buyluK was irado up largely from
the covcriug of professional local shorts , and
when thU movement coabcd thu market
lapsed , first Into tofaf Inactivity nnd then
Into rcnewptl weakness. During the last
naif hour Iho ngprcssl o speculators for the
decline were busy ncjilp , basing their sales
on the lack of outside support and en various
rumors of iiioicor loss value In character.
It la Important to onroTvo 6no of the weak
snots of the day's nrtiMfot was Louisville &
Nashville. Foreign speculative holders hftvo
for come lime past iacu feeding out this
stock nnd have not ronccalcd their Irritation
over the mystery W'which the directory
board has wrapped tib ) Chesapeake & Ohio
and Northwestern transaction.

Hoes Thcro was a fair run of bogs today
and a inarked improvement in the quality of
the receipts. Good , smooth-finished , heavy
hops predominated , but there was also a
fair showing of nice light and medium
weight stock. The tone to advices from
Chicago was more favorable than for several
days past-and although there was not much
of a shipping demand , the packers were all
In It , and trading was lively from the start.
Opening prices were steady to a shade llnncr
than on Monday and closing prices were all
of a nickel higher. The range of prices
was very narrow. A few choice
butcher and heavy weight loads brought
$5.70 and , most of the commoner
light and mixed packing imides sold at $ o.GO.
For fair tq good hogs of all weights It was
practically a fr .GO to ? 5.C5 market tno bulk
of the hogs goJug at those figures. The av
erage was about 4e higher than on Monday ,
but nearly .Me ( lower than oil last Tiiesdav.
