koLLECHONS SHOW VERY LITTLE CHANGE

Jlurdljr Op to tlm Average ot
thn 1'revlous Week.
The change to colder and stormy weather ,
Jivtilch , tmslness men htvo bson wishing for ,
Icnmo nt last on Saturday afternoon. While
the pleasant weather that hits prevailed dur-
line thowlntorttiusf.tr Is very grateful to
Itlio average run of humanity , It Is not well
I suited to the needs of business men. The
Jinan who has heavy winter Roods for sale
I lias no use for unseasonable weather and ho
I wants winter weather dutlng the winter
I months.
[ Only these who have had experience In
I business can fully appreciate the grout In-
I fluenco oxortcd by the weather over busl-
| ness. A mild winter enables consumers to
[ do without many things that are nn abso-
j Into necessity when the woithor turns cold
l.nnd thousands of dollars are kept out of general -
[ oral circulation. The season thus far has
1 furnished a good example ot this foot nnd
I business last week suffered severely for the
t tvnnt of n cold wave that would glvo now
Imnntus to thn domund for Hoods.
1 ho chaiiBo In the weather Saturday will
doubtless bo of some help nnd will servo as it
reminder of the near approach of winter
weather , even If U does turn warm again In
a day or two.
The elections were also a disturbing factor
[ Jn the business world , ns suoh a largo pro-
1 portion of the voting population gave moro
mention to politics than business
, Taking every thing Into consideration it Is
not suiprising that qulto a number of the
| Omaha jobbers report business during the
, past sixda\s as hiudly up to the previous
week's showing. The week closed , however ,
' with a much bettor feeling prevailing among
merchants In nil linos.Vhllo they do not
look for any gi cut activity In business they
Intcrptot the signs of returning confidence
ns an assurance that business during the
balance of the season will show an Improve
ment If nny change at nil.
The reports of returning confidence In the
cast have had n bonolloial effect upon the
.situation hero. A good many local business
men nro commenting upon the fact that
moro mills are stalling up in tlio cast than
tuoro were a few weeks ago nnd that It Is
only the question of ti little time when busi
ness In the whole country must toturn to its
normal condition. Huslncss will bo con
ducted along conservative lines for some llt-
tlo while .yet , but the effects of the financial
depression must wear aw.iy In time.
Collections in the country tributary to this
market nre only fair nnd there is consider
able room for improvement , but they are
much bettor than was the cnso a few weeks
ago. A frei movement of the corn crop
would I'ltvo a tcndcncv to make money much
more plentiful in the country , which would
both Improve trade anil collections
The dccicaso In thocleaimgs at Omaha as
compared with the corresponding wooicof a
year ngo was only II ) per cent. This is the
\ > est comptnttlvo showing made by
i the city In a good many weeks.
At the same time the volume of the
I clearings is not so largo ns It was during
the last two weeks of October. For the
week ending October 20 the cle irinci of the
national banks of Omaha wcro $5OOM,3t 7.
For the week ending October 27 the clear
ings wcro a few thousands laigor , but with
the first week in November they dropped
down to $1,410,715 , and for the pist week the
total was onlv about ? 2" > 0,000 larger. The
better comparative showing Is duo to the
fact that the clear Ings aje.tr ago were note
o largo in November * as they were in Octo
ber.
ber.Tho dccicaso m the cloarlnes for the
-whole countty , as compared with a year ngo ,
Is 20 per cent , which Is 1 per cent larger
than the decrease at Omaha , showing that
this city Is fully ns well off in the matter of
clearings us other cities of the country.

Mr. W. II. Uoborson , Omaha manager of
JR. O. Dun & Co. , in Ills usual weekly re-
rlow of local trade , spcaits as follows :
2 'Tor the lirst three days of the week the
elections wore of paramount Interest and
trade suffered somewhat on their account.
Elections aio hold too frequently In this
country for the good of business. Kveu a
local campaign Invariably affects trade ,
and when the interest becomes na-
* tlonal the evil effect Is moro at
tended , it would bo well If wo could
maimgi ) to have our municipal elec
tions and our county elections occur once in
two yo.us instead of once a year , so that the
.annual disturbance of trade would bo
Avoided. I hope some day the national
elections will bu changed so that a president
will bo elected for six .years at least. What
the business of the country wants Is stabil
ity. Uncoi tainty DaralUcs trade.
"In Oinulm triulo is Impioving and the sit-
"nation In llmrncliil circles Is mending very
rapidly. Conditions ate easier and bankets
tire beginning to loosen thu strings with
\vhlch their purses4iavo boon hold boilgldly.
If the depositors would only coma back
again and show a return of conlldcnco
by a retutn of funds the situation
would shiipo Itself satisfactory without
much delay. The great problem now before
the country Is not that of n itnnnclnl policy
or n tariff policy , but It Is ; How can ttio peo-
jilu bo bioutrht biok to the point when they
will rolv upon the banking institutions of
tlio countiy and ledcpoalt the four hundred
I millions thoh.uu taken out of the banks In
the lustutx months {
' Some Oinntin Jobbers enjoy n most excel
lent Btaiullng among eastern money lenders.

"Among ttio bond propositions voted was
onoof f JOO.UOO for a market house. I cannot
ay that 1 was favorably disposed toward
this proposition. It does not seem qulto
proper for the city to expend 300,000 In
creating a market , when , it the prlvl-
. leges of it market house were conceded to
fioiiio concern , nil tbo facilities would bo pro
vided without cost to the city. At the sumo

is to be hoped now that ttio city
fathers will develop a plan which will
in alto the investment a prolltublo ono for

portant to the ludhldual consumer. It
would sa\o 23 per coot on green goods to
nearly every householder. Two hundred

t-stublUlimout , and the stalls could bo routed
for enough to nay good Interest otr this sum
uud considerable besides , "
I'ruuuco I'oluler * .
CheituuU are gcarca on tUU market , nnd
no ono Appears to have nny stock worth
mentioning.
California cabbage is roadjrtoshlp nnd will
soon bo plenty enough to out qulto a figure
in the market.
Indian river oranges hava arrived oa this
market. They are supposed to bo a little
better than other Florida oranges.
N , H. Nelson of the firm of Branch ti Co. ,
left the first of the vroek for n trip of two or
three weeks through the Ulnck Hills country.
Western Nebraska has great possibilities
ns a potato producing country. There was a
car in from Hnlglcr a few days ngo that was
pronounced superior to Colorado stocK.
Throe of the larger potatoes , though not the
largest , weighed five pounds.
I/cnl houses report that their advices
from Baltimore would scorn to Indicate that
oysters are scarce , and that they are going
to bo higher. It Is claimed that the warm
weather and the consequent lleht demand
Is the only thing that has prevented an ad
vance so far.
The proposed shlnmont of a cargo of
oranecs from Florida to England has been
abtndoned. The storms In the south cut
down the Crop a good deal nnd growers were
unable to contract with the shippers , so that
the schcmn has boon given up as impractica
ble for this season. A peed many oranges
nrn being shipped to England from Now
York , but they nro going forward In small
lots.
Importers and dealers In foreign fruits nt
Now York are aroused over the hill which
has been Introduced by Hoprosontntivo
Geary of Callfornli , which increases the
duty on oranges nnd lemons U $1 a box ,
quadruples the duty on ollvo oil nnd places
a duty of 3) cents it pound on Zanto currants ,
which at present nro admitted free. The
Italian Chamber of Cpmtnorco of Now York
City has sent a petition to the commlttoo on
ways nnd moans protesting against any In-
crcnsa In duty on oranges and lemons and
advocating : t decrease of duty.
J. Koss Traynor , n heavy fiult shipper of
Marysvlllo , Cal. , was In the city
the middle of the week , Ho Is very
enthusiastic over the growth of the fruit
business ot California. In splto of the dull
times ho estimates that 1BOO to 2,000 moro
cars of green fiults have boon shipped from
his section of the state than last year.
Owing to tlm scarcltv of money there was
less fruit put into cans than usual , and nil
the old stock Is being cleaned up. Next
year , under favorable conditions , the c.tnnors
will bo likely to run muclt heavier , which
would have n tendency to reduce the ship
ments of green fruits. Mr. Travnor says
that the fruit growers have allptid expenses
nnd have a little money loft in their packets.
For some months past the npplo crop has
boon reported to bo very short , and as ttio
season advances this fact Is moro fully np-
proolatod. Prices throughout the country
aio high , not only with ureen , but dried and
other apples , aim from late reports It is bo-
llovoil the green w 111 not amount to ever CO
per cent of an average crop. In some sec
tions a fair quantity of fruit was wised , but
la ottiors the yield was almost a falluro ;
this being the case at many points where
much stock Is usually evaporated and dried.
The crop is not only small , but of very poor
quality , and the outlook scorns to favor high
price's for the balance of thosonson.Tho short
ness of the crop , together with the Inferior
quality , is attributed to the severe droath
which prevailed during the summer months ,
and the sovcro storms in September which
caused largo qu unities of fruit to bo blown
fiom the trees bcforo it had n chance to ma
ture. Hoports from sections all through
Now York statens well as Pennsylvania
Maryland and Virginia , state that the dam
age done fruit having boon blown from the
trees wan particularly laigo. while other
states suffered moro or less ftorn the same
cause.
