Xc\r Itomi ,
Tlio recent troubto between the manage-

proposed i-cillictlon of the lattor's wages ,
tins resulted iu mi investigation , the report
of wittuh Is startling and shows why even n
rich miuo cannot bo tnado to ( my dividends ,
says Ores nnd Metals.
During the month of Juno the total ex
penses of the Comstoclc mines wcro $101,571 ,
and of this amount the miners received only
$43,030. Presidents , secretaries , superin
tendents nnd other ptlt-cilgcd minors , most
of whom live in San Francisco ami do no
work , absorbed SlO.tibO in salaries.
The rest of the money was paid out for
water , ofllco rent , supplies , otc , , and sup
plies , ote. , are niton furnished by dummy
contractors really representing director * of
the mi no at about double their vnluo.
Sierra Nevada employed four minors dur
ing June , paying thorn $400 , and it cost $075
to boss these four'men. . In the Alpha mluo
one man was employed half the month at n
cost of $ CO. Thin half of a minor required
Rr75 worth of bossing.
Conlldcnuo paid &KK ) In ofllco salaries to
keep ono' minor at work and wants to
economize by reducing the miner's wages.
Overman paid a superintendent JUOO , presi
dent SlfiO , secretary jJJOO nud assistant secre
tary $50 , und , employed eight miners. The
Adclphia's half miner tlrow $00 , but , the total
expense of the mine was 3.010. The mlno
could save $15 for the poor stockholders If
that half minor would consent to a 23 per
cent reduction of his wages and visions of
dividends would loom up at once.
Silver Hill , Imperial and Lady Wnshmgt6n
managed to spend ( U.ilOS.Ol without employ
ing a miner. Not a Hok of work was done
in the Alta , but the salary list was fJj and
the total expense $1.476. Some of the
officials bold places in four or 11 vo mines nnd
get from 050 to $050 a mouth. A. C. Hamil
ton gets the latter amount for superintend
ing seven mines.
This looting of the Corns took has developed
in San Francisco the two professions of
mining prcsulentand mining secretary , both
of which are lucrative and neither of which
is laborious. The shareholders of Best tt
Belcher , Gould & Curry nnd Kontuck de
clined to bo cinched for any more assess
ments and eighteen minors have been
dropped from , the pay rolls of those mines by
the economical managers. Salaries have not
been reduced.
Struck Silver Now.
A short time ago an important strike was
made in the lied mountain district , Col
orado. The property is known ns the Tol-
lurlde , and a vein had already been opened
up , the ore running seven and a half ounces
In gold. Quito a quantity of good mineral is
on the dump and ready to ship. The mon , a
few days'bgo , began to dig a foundation for
their new cabin , and had picked away tbo
upper soil , when they struck into a rich
vein , right at the grassroots. Assays of the
oroAvere made , and showed 800 ounces silver.
The ore Is in the form of ruby silver , and thg
vein seems to be , so far as developed , strono
and continuous. The country rock there is
granite , but there are strong purpnyry
dykes , in which the mineral-bearing veins
are found.

Work on the tunnel from the Missouri
river bluff to the big artesian well at Cham
berlain. S. 0. , is'progressing steadily. The
tuunol is about BJ xS feat , and will bo about
' 250 feet long. It is iutended to run the
surplus water from the point wnero it comes
through the chalk rock through the tunnel
to the river. The owner of the well and
roller mill is putting considnrablo additional
machinery into the mill. When the ma
chinery is placed in position the capacity of
the mill will bo half again as great as here
tofore. There is such an abundance of
power from the great well that It Is pro
posed to utilize it moro generously. With
the additional machinery the mill will easily
Imvo a capacity of 150 barrels per day.

to Ooctii'l Like School.
Superintendent Davis of the Pierre Indian
school has lust returned from a visit to the
Crow Creelt and Lower Brulo reservations ,
where ho wont In quest of pupils for his
school , but bis trip was unsuccessful. Mr.
Davis reports that there arc over 5,000 Indian
children of school ago In the state , but that
at present but 1,090 arc attending the gov
ernment schools In the state. The reason
for this small proportion of attendance is
said to bo a lack of interest on the part of
the parents und a feeling against sending
their children abroad , but It is regarded us
peculiar that it Is also next to impossible to
keep any great number of pupils even In the
schools at the various agencies , where It Is
very convenient for the Indians , and where
the parents can visit their children or the
children visit their homes as they deslro.
Kvcry effort will bo used to induce the
young Indians on the agencies to attend
school In more general numbers.

The Nevada Southern railway novr ex

to the Vundorbllt aud New York mining
districts.
Mr. Bluko , the president , manes the abso
lute statement thai the road will bo ut once
extended with all the energy and dispatch
possible to the coal Holds of southern Utah.
This statement is coupled with no reservations
tions whatever. The company has secured
the right of way and tbo means to carry its
road 100 miles farther than Its prescnl
terminus , and that will bring the cars into
the center of the coal Holds of Utah. The
line will also pass through a region where
vast deposits of the best iron ore on the
continent are to bo found , Exports who
have neon over the ground stuto that there
nraonly two othcr , places in the Unkct
States when : ore can bo found In quantities
that is suited to the production of the lineal
