Humors ot Wellington LoRUIntlnn Quito n
l ? ntor In Speculation ,
"NEW YoitK. Oct. 20. The Washington ad
vices were not entirely favorable this morn
ing to an Immcdtatu vote on the silver bill ,
nor was the London market for American
securities encouraging , and yet the early
dealings on the Stock exchange were in the
nialu characterized by strength. There
were occasional reactions , but up to noon
the general tendency of prices was upward.
Shortly after this hour , however , the specu
lative temper began to experience u unango
and them wcro evidences that a realizing
movement was in progress.
The commission houses which yesterday
had practically all buying orders were ou
both sides of the mnrkot today , and selling
orders were perhaps moro numerous. A
good deal of outside buying has been done
nasttwodavs.and in which manv
of the purchasers appear to t > o satisfied with
the prolits already shown. Realizing sales be
came quite heavy during the afternoon. The
volume of this business was larger than it
would otherwise have been by reason of the
reports that Senators Allen and Poffer had
concluded to continue the light in the sennto
on thu old tactics. It was this unexpected
clement of danger that entered into
the question that swelled the sell
ing movement of the afternoon and
unsettled the speculation. In many in
stances the entire early improvement was
lost and the llgurea reached a figure below
yesterday's prices , but the greater part of
the list retained part of the morning's advance -
vance at thu close , the close being fairly
steady at .a fair recovery from the lowest
point , but at a decline of from @ 'J per cent
from the best figures of the day. The prin
cipal changes compared with the final sales
of yesterday are : Lake Shore , 1 % per cent ;
Delaware fc Hudson and Erie , preferred , 1 %
percent ; Sugar and Northern Pacific , pre
ferred , 19 per centUnion ; Pacific , Louisville
and Nasnvillo , 1 per cent ; Heading and Bur
lington , % per cent.
Advances : Michigan Central , SJjf per
cent ; Chicago Gas , 2 % per cent ; St. Paul ,
preferred , and Pittsourg & Western , pre
ferred , 2 per cent ; Colorado Fuel and Iron.

The Post says : Several moro than usual
divergent factors combined to make up the
day's market. First m point of time was
tbo renewal of enthusiastic buying based on
the certainty of the silver law's repeal.
Purchases were mainly for professional
account , and a large proportion of them rep
resented the buying In of shorts. On the
other hand there was pretty heavy selling
from the same general quarter , originating
partly with the room operators taking their
profits on the past few days advance , and
partly with room traders selling short on
the usual theory of a reaction. This move
ment governed the market of the afternoon.
AU of thcso elements enter in a greater or
less degree into every upward movement ,
but each was in turn remarkably iutensilied
today. Speakinir , however , from a dis
tinctively Stock exchange standpoint it may
safely bo affirmed that the largest Wall
street interests have not encouraged tbo
present upward movement.
This is not probably the reason why many
of the most influential commission houses
have advised against largo purchases. Prob
ably tbo repeal vote will bo followed by amore
moro rapid downward movement , yet the
year's cxpcricnco certainly suggests an
equally quick upward reaction later on. The
factors previously ignored in the silver bul
lion trade have been developed since the col
lapse of Juno. One is the greatly increased
Asiatic demand for silver at the lower price ;
the other the apeod with which the Ameri
can production can bo normally adjusted to
the demand. Both must bo reckoned In with
the forecasts for the future.
The governing committee of the Stock ex
change at its meeting last evening added
securities to the par value of $3,335,100 to the
list of dealings , including $377,100 additional
to Louisiana new 4 per cents of 18U4 , making
the total amount of this issue listed $1)33- ! )

Receipts of cattle wcro very little over
