CHICAGO , Oct. 24. A stirring up in earnest
trns given the whe.it trade In the last hour
today. The closing cables wcro much
stronger. The wires were kept busy with
rumors of a prob.iblo end of the stiver light.
When the rumori wcro followed by posltivu
nsncrttons from senators that n vote on tlio
re c.il bill was certain Inside of twcntv-lour
hours , the sentiment became very bullish.
The shorts wcro In n great hurry to cover.
Jsow York ana the northwest bought In this
mnrkot In 1(10,000 ( bu. , lots. Prices advanced
xcry sharply. The decline of two weeks was
recovered In two hours. December wheat
bounded up IJ c , closing nt ljfc above last

fluctuations of wheat and closed with a gain
of Kc. Provisions ruled dull nnd lower. .

until shortly before the close , when prices
advanced Ik-vulosii'S s'trong at the highest
figures of the.1 day. It was claimed by seine
that the market was heavily ' -short , " and a
prominent trader , after selling fairly early
and not finding It easy to depress values ,
commenced to cover. This started th'o uu-
\ancp , iind when the news from Washing
ton was received the market responded
rcndlly , causing quite a llttlo excitement.
Offerings of corn wcro not largo , whllu the
demand from nil sources was comparatively
light. THO market opened rather firm mid
prices wcro about from 2f > ° to X ° higher , but
n weaker tccltng was developed and prices
declined from % c to V c , a moderate tr.ldlng
at the receding scalo. During the latter
part of the suasion a llttlo more steadiness
prevailed und prices rallied and closed com
paratively steady.
There was a light trade In oats , but a
stronger iccllng. duo mainly to sympathy
with wheat , which carried prices up from
J/c toVc In the face of the fair selllmr and
closed the market steady at about the outside -
side figures , with a net gain of from j'c to
' The provision market wns generally dull
nnit drooping. There was some recovery
from the prices prevailing early in the ses

Scald of Sprcnlntion In Src-nritlua Very
Heavy tn Sew York.
NEW YOIIK. Oct. 24 , The speculation on
the Stock exchange today was on a scale of
magnitude to which Wall street has long
been a Btranpor. The pent up force held in
check by the uncertainty of the financial
situation , ar.d which It was expected would
not bo given rein until the silver question
was definitely solved , was unloosened by
the VnnderbiltMaxwcllcombineIn the coal
stocks. The ncqiusltion of a Vunderbilt
Interest by the coal roads was looked upon
asgointrfar toward placlnc the shares of
these companies in a .position from which
they might bo taken out of the purely specu
lative list ana given an investment charac
ter. . .
When the fact becump known that "Wil
liam K. Vanderbilt was already a lurgo
holder of Lackawunna and was In touch
with the Maxwell party in Now Jersey Cen
tral the street took o great deal more for
granted and ut once figured out great futures
for the stocks of all the coal roads. Heading
wus made a center of attraction and large
blocks of thostock changed hands. The sales
of these shares alone aggregated over 118,000
and were taken In heavy blocks , i acka-
wautiu , which opened at a dcclino 01 i per
cent , fell off 3 pe1 cent more on the early
dealings , recovered IJf per cent , reacted
4K Per cent , rallied 4 % per cent und
declined 1 per cent , closing at a decline of
8) ) per cent from yesterday. Now jersey
Central opened at. an advance of 1 per cent ,
but quickly declined 2J/ per cent , closing } {
per cent above the lowest quotation made
and IJf per cent below yesterday.
Sugar wus the feature of the general list.
Whllo fairly active in the fore noon it was
not until the afternoon that the great move
ment therein took place. Opening at last
nleht's closing price , 97 % . the stock grad
ually drooped to 9 J , then troved up slowly
to 99 % , receding to 98 % at noon.
Then came a very strong buying move
ment , professedly based on the certainty
of the passage of the silver hill.
As the shares moved toward par a remark
of James K. Kcene , made some time ago ,
that howould put the stock up to 100 , was
recalled , und that was taken as the probable
limit of advancement , but tlio stock did. not
lag a moment on the century mark , but on
brisk buyinc moved to 104J , un advance of
7 per cent from the low level of the morning.
Tnis great movement in Sugar wus attended
by considerable excitement. Sugar pre
ferred did not follow tno variations of the
common , but rose 3 per cent on light busi
ness.
ness.Tho general market was Irregular during
the morning hours , but became strong in the
afternoon. The chief advances were : Lead
preferred , 5J per cent : Evansville & Terre
"Haute , 4 per cent ; Pittsoure & Western
preferred , i % per cent ; St. Paul preferred
und Minneapolis & St. Louis common trust
receipts , 2 per cent.
The Post sa s : The street was kept well
ndvlscd today of the situation of affairs ut
Washington by means of frequent bulletins
received by brokers und news agencies , und
the reported surrender of tno silver demo
crats gave material assistance to thu
upward movement in stocks. The
prospect of any movement on the
repeal bill was hailed with general satisfac
tion , nnd had it not come at a tlmo when the
market was dominated by special controlling
Influences it would have had a more marked
effect on the dullness. But the bull move
ment in stocks hold the attention in a largo
measure and a somewhat wild attempt to
run up stocks on the strength of good news
proved disastrous to these who engineered it
and caused a bad break from thu top figures
at the closo. The general feeling is that the
situation at Washington is clearing and thu
effect on speculative values will bo excellent.

Receipts of all kinds wcro fair today and
for the two days supplies , compared with
the first two days of last week , show an in
crease of about 2,000 cattle , 2,000 , hogs and
2,000 sheep.
The fresh supply of cattle was about the
same as on last Tuesday , but holdovers ran
the figures' up to not much short of 0,000
head. There was the usual scarcity .of de
sirable beef cattlo. Offerings included very
few cornfed steers , olllicr good or bad , and
the westerns wcro largely made UD of fair
to uoor stock. There was a very good de
mand from the dressed beet men , and with
encouraging reports from Chicago the mar
ket was reasonably active and fully steady
on all suitable offerings. Fair to very good
1,150 to 1.400-lb. cornfed steers sold readily at
from $4.25 to $4.70 , whllo western rangers
sold largely at from $3 to $3.05. The move
ment was tolerably brislc througnout , and a
good clearance was effected.
There was no particular uhango In the cow
maritot. Between forty and fifty loads wcro
offered for sale and buyers gathered them in
freely at full Monday's prices , common to
very ROOQ stocu selling at from $1.40 to $2.55 ,
largely around $1.00 to $2.25. The calf
market was indifferently supplied and prices
wero'firmly held at from $1.75 to $4 for com
mon larsro to good veal stoclc. Hough stock
at around $1.50 to $2.25 was about steady.
The feeder market was a trifle dull , but
peed to choice stock sold at strong prices ,
while easier prices "rdled on the ordinary
grades. A coed volume of business wus
transacted and largely at from $2.55 to $3.15.
Good to choice feeders are quoted at $3 to
$3,50 , fair to good at $2.00 to $3 , with common
and inferior stuff at around $2 to $2.60.
