CHICAGO , Oct. 23. A badly stunted visible
RUpply Incrraso bulged the prlco of wheat
today. The market closed with a net gain
of J o. Corn was Inclined to heaviness , but
n heavy break was prevented by the strength
lit wheat. Jtcloscdata decline of ? e for
the day. Provisions were llrm nnd higher.
Wheat at the opening \vn * weaker nnd
prices from # a to % c lower than closing
figures Saturday , but prices advanced I' o
nbovo the opening figures , cased off a trillo ,
held steady nnd rlosed about from J c to % c
hlchor than the llrst flgiu-eg of Saturday.
When It first begun to appear that the In
crease In the visible supply would bo much
less than calculated upon , It was found that
thcro was very little wheat for alo. Shorts ,
who had n prollt. Attempted to secure it ,
nnd there was a qUlck movement upward ,
less fortunate shorts trying meanwhile to
elop losses. The Now York contingent ,
which Is supposed to bo long on a blf ; line of
wheat which now shows n heavy loss , was
behoved to be using the change In sentiment
to bull the market , and with much success.
Another feature was the active buylng-by
Charley Smith's brokers. This plunger Is
supposed to have sold a million or two shorten
on the recent bulge , and as it showed a good
prollt today , ho was thought to bo trying to
pet U in. but as there was little for sale ,
bids Imd to bo steadily raised.
Corn receipts were somewhat larger than
anticipated , which caused a silent reduction
near the opanlng , but urgent inquiry from
the short Interest , coupled with the good
inquiry from shippers , imparted considerable
strength to the market during the earlypart ,
of the session nnd pi Ices rallied from Jf c to
le from the Inside llgures reported. At the
Improvement there was considerable tires-
sure to Bell temporarily unrt prices gradually
bottled back from i otocduo chtelly to
the quite liberal supply estimated for tomor
row. At the reduction theio was a fair
inquiry and prices rallied from Ja'o to J c and
the market ruled rather steady at the close.
lu oats the feature waa the covering by
"shorts. " Tno market opened easier and
gradually became firmer , prices advancing
from c to | o but reacted J c and closed
steady.
Hogs wcro fewer than Saturday's esti
mates and packers wcro bidding for October
delivery with no one , willing to sell , which
made the nmking-up of the prices easy. The
close was at the top figure of the day. Jan-

It Was Like Old Times In the Street
\e < torday.
NEW YOHK. Oct. 23. It was like what the
street reminisccntly alludes to as ' 'the olt
times" on the Stock exchange today. The
dealings were on a hit-go scale , nearly every
body was on the bull side of the market ant
there was an all-pervading nlr of buoyancy
which carried every thine before it. At the
opening ot business dlseouraslnsj advices
regarding the prospects of unconditional
repeal scaled the initial sales down from } (
' per cent und the indications were decidedly -
cidedly depressing , but the temper of specu
lation was changed with magical rapidity by
ono of those special movements which marl :
the history of Wall strost nnd which are
seldom based on anything more solid than
rumor.
The movinp Influence In today's market
was a newspaper article announcing that
the Now Jersey Central party led by Presi
dent Maxwell and his friends had secured u
controlling interest in the Delaware , Lackn-
wanna & Westernand would hereafter di
rect the policy of that corporation. Subse
quently , a transfer of 40.000 shares of Lack-
uwanna to William K , Vandcrbllt led to the
belief that there was a trunk line combina
tion in the coal deal , and despite thu remarkable -
markablo luck of knowledge displayed by
the presidents of the two i-oulb : named , the
impression Rained ground that the lonp an
ticipated coalition of Iho coal roads had
taken shape.
Huports were current that the Delaware
& Hudson companies were involved in the
deal to the extent of being committed to
adopt the policy to bo outlined by the New
Jersey Central parties that all the coal roads
would act in harmony with the trunk lines.
As u natural result the huuwUics of the
anthracite roads wore in brisk demand and
the upward movement therein curried along
the entire list.
The fate of the silver hill wns not con
sidered a factor in tha situation , if
thought of at all , uml Kock Island stock
traded In responded to a greater or lesser
extent to the call for ait advance , Thu
coalers of course led the market i the
appreciation ot values , the highest point
of tno day being compared with the closing
sales of Saturday. Luke Shore shared
lurgoly in the improvement , soiling up 5
per cent. There were sonpa slight realiza
tions at the udviiuca una nt ono time a small
raid was mudo on the market under cover of
a rumor to the effect that the prlo of wheat
had broken. The docllilo duo to these causes
ranged 4 } per cent , the coalers being the
chief sulterera , but the market speedily re
covered und the upward movement was
resumed , llio Ilnul dealings being character
ized by strength and activity and the mar
ket closed witli a buoyant tone und a de
cidedly upward tendency.
Heading , which did not participate in the
advance to any great extent until the after
noon , closed at the highest figure
touched , but the otlior coalers showed roao-
tlons of from lf to 2J per cent. "
The Industrials , with the exception of
Sugar and ICdison Electric , did not share to
any appreciable extenfln the rlso , and Dis
tilling and CuUlefeeding actually receded
a fraction. Compared with Saturday's clos
ing figures , the chief advauccs were : Lack *

MONDAY. Oat. 23.
As generally happens on the first day of
the week , receipts of cattle ami sheep were
liberal , but the run of liojjs was light.
On Monday , two years ago to.lay the cat
tle receipts reached 0,784 head , the largest
since the yards wcro opened. Today -that
record Was beaten by over 1,000 head and anew
now high water mark recorded. Fresh re
ceipts today were 7,780 head , or nearly 1,500
heavier than last Monday. The market
was In very fair shape in spite of the ex
cessive supplies , iteally desirable beef
steers were scarce , the demand for thorn
was good , and us Chicago was reported
stronger prices held up fairly well. Some
fairish lUlH-lb. nutivcs brought ? 4,40 , and
good western beeves sold nt from $3.50 to
$3.90. On the general run of western cattle ,
which were common , the market ruled slow ,
with prices weak'to a dime lower than Sat
urday. The movement was rather slucrgish
throughout , but considering the excessive
offerings nnd the common quality sellers had
little reason to complain.
The cow market opened lower , but under
thp influence of active buying by both local ,
houses und outsiders , prices Improved a lit
tle nud the bulk of the decent stock changed
hands at very nearly steady prices , around
SI.05 anil J'J.10 , Common and Inferior stuff
was in oxvctiblvo .supply , and sold all of u
dime lower than last week. The calf mar
ket WHS steady to a shade eanlqr , und rough
stock Kcnerally sold at shaded prices.
Business lu feeders was somewhat demor
alized. The demand was fair , but with a
flood of common stuff all grades sold lower ,
nnd the movement WHS not ut nil brisk.
Keally good stock ahowod very littlodeclliic ,
while the ordinary grades were all of lOo to
15c off , Thorn wcro u good many cattle still
unsold at the closu , but shipments wcro , ua
usual , largo. Good to choice feeders are

Ci.r.VEi.AND.Oct. . S3. A largo vessel ,
thought nt flrst to bo a steamer , was ro-
lorted by Captain SltiKlu of the lishlnR tiifr ,
{ . T. Hey , to bo standing at the bottom of
: . .ako Eric , n fo\v tnllcs from this point.
Captain Sinplo was running out to lift his
nets when ho saw the spars of a sunken ves
sel protruding from the water. Thuro were
three singlestick sp.xrs , with white painted
tops , each ornamentea with gilt spheres.
About thlrty-llvo feet were exposed. The
vessel is twenty-three miles from this port.
Captain Single took soundings , and found
she was lying in thirteen fathoms of water.
Ilo was or the opinion that she was .1 largo
steamer.
It was stated that the vessel must have
ROIIO down since Friday , for hi-r wreck was
not seen on that day by boats passing the
spot. All sorts of theories vcro advanced in
regard to the wreck. The most acceptable
of all is that there was a collision between
two largo vessels during the heavy fog
Saturday night.
Inquiry of vessel men early this morning
failed to throw any light upon the mystery ,
but later J. M. Jones of the llrm of J. M.
Jones & Dro. , vessel agents , told an Asso
ciated press reporter tlmt the foundered
boat was undoubtedly his schooner , the
Klversidc. She has been missing since the
big storm of the IBtli and no tidings have
been Cleaned -from her siuco that time. The
Iliversldo was commanded by Captain David
G. Farringtou of Detroit and his wife was
qook on the boat. Sim carried five other
persons , all of whom nro undoubtedly lost.
The only names that could bo learned of the
missing are Joseph Hargroaves , mate , his
son John and John Paige , botli seamen.

NEW Yomc , Oot. 23. Glaus Sprockets , the

Hawaii , has been in town several days. Ilo
spoke freely to a reporter about sugar Inter
ests and Hawaiian affairs.
"lam opposed to stealing , " ho said , "nnd
do not bollove that might makes right. The
United States seized the Sandwich islands
without any right to do so and assumed
charge of affairs there. It is not because I
have sugar industries thcro that I say this
was unjust. It was too much a policy of
grab , and contrary therefore to the ppirit of
fair play. If this government thought that
England or Japan was after Hawaii a mis
take was made. I am sure the English gov
ernment did not , aud docs not , seek to estab
lish control over the group. "
