THE OMATTA DAILY KEEtpSATURDAY. OOTOKEll 21 , 1803. COMMERCIAL AND FINANCIAL tiisqnioting Humors About Silver legisla tion Demoralized Grain Holders. Disquieting rumors about the silver situation apparently de moralized holder * of groin today. Wheat reversed the action ot the tiny before ; It opened firm and closed weak and \io lower UIMI yesterday. Corn followed wheat and closed Ve.ik nl o decline. Oats j folded \ery reluctantly ) $ 'c of Us previous value. Provision * were firm , leaving off at slightly better than yesterday's closing prices. Pardridgo sold steadily diu-lng the ad- vnnco and covered seine on tno following de cline. N. D. Ho.im was a free seller of December at top mid egged on the slump. Wheat at the start wns SU-OIIR and prices wcro advatK ed J o over the rinsing figures of yesterday , but later eased off , pi-ices de clining IJie , then held steady mid closed about ytu lower for December nnd Jfo lower for May than llio closing figures of .yester day. Tim early strength was attributed to the strong English cables and fair buying on speculative account. Now York -\as strong nnd foreigners were buying wheat at Now York. The ehorta Old some covering naturally , but the advance brought out rnther largo offcrinp.i and tlu-.e Was fair selling bv snmo parties. Corn began qulto strong , prices advancing from % c to } jC. Liverpool advices Indicated consldorablo strength. This m.ido shorts a llttlo unensy , nnd their purchases to some extent created the greater portion of the advance. At the close there was some de sire on the part of the long Interest to real ize , more especially by those who had pur chased within the p.ist two or three days In the belief that the ru'dlpts would matoi tally full of. The estimated receipts caused a weaker feeling , assisted to some extent by the easiness in wheat , and a decIIno fol lowed , with the closing figure about the lowest of the day. There was a coed trade early in o.its and a very strong feeling , prices advancing J-ijo In sympathy with corn. Later weakness do- Teloped and the advance was lost , the mar ket closing quiet at the Inside wih a slight loss for the day. The provision market was dull alter a few minutes of modor.Uo activity at , the start. Prices were llrm all day at a shade over yesterday's ' closing prices. The packers bid for the different products in the dull inter vals and had no dilllculty In holding up the prices in the absence of anything 10 sell. Closlntr prices are about 5c advance on those of the previous day. There was a fair demand for vessel room nnd rates were firm at S o for wheat and 2c for corn to iiuffalo. Wall street seems more conflueoil that the Sherman bill repeal measure will reach a vote without much nore delay. It was a roturniu ? of confl- lenco in the power of the sound money sen ators , backed by the ndtninistratlon , to carry the day that gave the tone of strength o the dealings on the Stock exchange by jrlngltijj the boar's to cover , inducing pur chases for the long account anil establishing i material appreciation in values. The Washington advices were watched very closely on the exchange today and were construed ns surely indicating that the dead lock was about to bo brought to an end , and unconditionally. Under tbo cheerful influ ences a healthier tone was imparted to the speculation than it has experienced in sev eral weeks. The buying wns not confined to any ono or two sots of stocks , but was Well distributed throughout the list. The mar ket , too. moved more in unison than of late , nnd In the upward movement there were few laggards. Shortly after the opening , which was at higher llgurcs , some selling orders were encountered that had the effect of check ing the advancing tendency. But the de pression was slight and the upward move ment was resumed. Another fractional reaction occurred before noon which was quickly recovered and again about 3 p. m. , prices rccedoJ , Pullnuin , whjeh sold down IJf per cent , ueing the only stock that was seriously af fected. In the late dealings , efforts to realise unsettled the market somewhat , tiut the tone at the close was llrmer , com pared witli the llnal sales of yesterday , the closing llgurcs showing nu advance in the general list ranging from } { to 'A % per cent , the latter'in Michigan Central. 3 per cent in Manhattan Consolidated , 2 per cent In Edison Electric and " per cent in Lacka- wanna & Western. The flvo days supply of cattle wns about tbo saino ns for tlio corresponding period last week. 'Hogs sh6w an increase of nbout 4,500 head , while sheep receipts bavo fallen off nearly 5,500 head. There was a much butter tone to the t'onoral cattle , market nnd trading wns livelier than on any previous day this week. Prices wore hardly iiuotably higher , In fact there wore almost too few beef cattle hereto to afford a fair test of the market's strength. Some fat 1,43'J-lb. cornfed western steers sold for fl.Go nnd a lo.ul of choice light 1,1-2- lo. steers brought $4.75 : but cornfed cattle inudo up irvury insimiiflcatit portion of tlio total offeritiKs. Beef westerns wore ex tremely scarce and generally common. The ( uniniut was good and trading active , fair to very good rangers scllinc nt from 1 to $3 45. All that killers could use bold wad'.ly ' and n good and early clearance was effected. The cow market was active with prices steady to a shade stronger on nil grades. Portions a third of the offerings were cows and mixed lots , ami prices ranged from SI 35 for common uanuws to &J.40 for very good , nit cows. Couimbnlargo to good veal calves sola at from $3 to $4 , and poor to coed bulls , oxen , and stags at from $1.50 to $2.50 or ristht around steadyprices. . There was moro- life and a better tone to the stociccr and fooJcr trade. Offerings were as usual lilTcfal. but the demand was good from all iofirces. Kegular dealers found an active country demand , whiln slop feeders also uoug'nt freely. A big business was transacted at prices steady to n shade stronger' than Thnrsdny. Goud to choice feeders are quoto'd at $3.00@U.50 ; fair to Roo3 at S2.GO@3.00 , with common and in ferior stuff at around $3.00@2 50.
