CUJCAOO , Oct. 17. It was a choppy dny In
the wheat pit. Speculation was chiefly on
local account mid the nmrkct changed from
Tfeak to strong more than once , but left off
weak nt 3 c iiecllno for December nm\ from
Jfi ) to ? tfc decline for May. Charters for
810,000 bu. of corn gave that nuirkot a flnn
tone iiml It closed n shade lilphtr thnn on the
dny before. Provisions averaged weak and
closed with declines of from lOc to We In the
January options , with pork the weakest
product.
Wheat , nt the opening , \\ai about the
same ns yesterday's closing , and Bold off
from } { a to % c , advanced about % o , then
declined < ! ( fo , became stroiiRor , and with
only alight lluctuatlons advanced from Jfc
to Xct eased off J c , ana closed within } { a
6t the bottom. Kiirly English cables were
sUrniiKcr , and this had a strcnifthvnlnff
effect , but operators Boomed to lack con
fidence , and with fnlr offerings the mantel
lost part on the early advance , lucre was
apparently good Investment buying for May
delivery , winch resulted in the widening
out a trJllu In the premium for De
cember. Ono of the chlof elements of
uncertainty was tlio silver situation In
the scnato. Tlicro was pretty fair realizing
in the late decline. T-.ato cables , especially
tlic continentals , Avcro reported weak , ex
cept Hcrlln , which was quoted higher. The
late Liverpool market through private
source ! * uns reported castor. Eastern
European shipments for the week were
larger und the English visible supply was
reported as showing an increase of 8513,000
bu.
bu.Corn
Corn opened rather , lower , but a little
pressure- soil c.iuaud a decline of fromtijfc
to 9fif. Durlnir the latter Dart of the session
the feeling was steadier and prices ralllcu
from ? ifo to } o on the r-ravalence of n good
shipping demand , and the market in a gen
eral way closed rather firm , Uuslness was
only fair.
There was good covering by shorts In the
oats crowd and buying on Now York orders.
JV firmer feeling prevailed , prices advancing
from i c to ) c for May and from } { o to j/o
on the near futures , but May receded % o
from the top. The receipts were less than
anticipated.
Provisions were neglected. Packers were
apparently disinclined to do moro than hold
the market suniclently to prevent any of the
great decline in the cash pits. Prices sagged
off in sympathy with a lOc decline in hogs.
Fluctuations , such an thcro were , resulted
mainly from sympathy with the wheat
market.
The receipts for tomorrow are estimated
at : Wheat , 14ears ! ! ; corn,525cars ; oats,204
cars ; hogs. 24,000 head.

Thuro Win a Fairly Active Spocnlntlon In
Sorurltlcs Yesterday.
NEW YOIIK , Oct. 17. There was a fairly
active speculation on the Stock exchange
todny , nnd largo blocks of Distilling , Head
ing , Sugar and Burlington changed hands.
But it vas a brokers' market almost entirely ,
and the dealings , even during the brief
periods of strength , which served merely to
stem the downward movement temporarily ,
were feverish and irregular. Tlicro was
at no time during the day what might bo
called strong buying except In Distilling ,
which wns supported from the inside , and
which was bolstered up by the repeated
story that the Distribution company had
been brought to terms and that favorable
congressional action was to be anticipated.
The stock closed at UIJ . a decline off per
cent. Heading declined steadily from the
opening onher.vy selling. The close was
within 1 } per cent of the best figures of the
day , but 1 per cent below yesterday's final
sales.
Sugar was favorably nffccted by reports
that the company was in the market as u
large money lender nnd advanced 1 % per
cent , only , however , to quickly lese the
improvement and closed at a decline of l *
per cent from the highest point. The gen
eral market was stronger and higher at the
opening- and un advance of 1 } { was made , in
which the Industrials ware leaders. A sellIng -
Ing movement was developed , however ,
within the first fifteen minutes of business ,
under the influence of which the values
depreciated , nnd with an occasional feeble
rally the tendency of prices was
downward during the rest of the day , the
close being heavy at declines ranging from
} to 2 per cent , the latter in Chicago , Bur
lington & Quincy ; 1 % per cent in Hock Isl
and ; 1 } per cent iu Manhattan cousols and
American Tobacco ; 1 % per cent in Chicago
Gas. General Electric , Lake Shore , Now York
and Northern ; l percctitin Missouri Pacific ,
and 1 per cent in Reading. Some few shares
showed advances , including > Luclcdo Gas ,
1 % per cent : Wheeling & Lake Erie com
mon , 1J per cent ; Wheeling & Lake Erie
preferred and Lackawanua , 1 per cent. Pa-
cillc Mail opened at u decline of lj > per cent ,
but rose 1 > I'er cent at the closo. Dos
Molncs & Fort Dodge preferred sold at 20 ,
an advance of U per cent since the last sale.
The monetary situation continues to im
prove. Currency in largo amounts has
reached the banks from outside points during
the past three days , mainly from Chicago ,
and fully $2,000.000 In currency has boon re
ceived since last Friday. Call loans today
are quoted at 2 per cent and time money nt
4 and 0 percent. Commercial paper is un
changed. Sterllnor exchange is easier and
the leading dealers have reduced the rates
of actual business in bankers' bills } per
cent , while commercial bills nro down tf to
% per cent , although the receipts nro small ,
but the inquiry has dropped off in u larger
ratio. The volume of business Is contracted
and the indications are not in the line of u
firmer market.

So far this week compared with last
there has been an increase of about 2ROO ,

nearly 4,000 sheep. ' > - - -
The cattle markfi ] was slow and dull
throughout , but prices \vero llttlo If any
lower than on Monday. Receipts wore lib
eral and there was the usual scarcity of
beef cattlo. The supply was sufficiently
large , however , to spare buyers for local
dressed beef houses any anxiety on tno sub
ject or filling their orders. Fair to
good 1,050 to 1,400-1 b corn-fed na
tive steers sold at M.25 and $4.05
and at least one bunch would have brought
$ o or better If It had sold. The western
cattle included quite a fo\v very decent
beeves und prices ranged from S3 to $3.UO for
fair to choice stock , while there was some
hero good enough to soil at considerably over
$1. The feeling was weak and trading slow
throughout.
Cows according to buyers sold nt steady to
stronger prices , while according to sellers
prices ruloJ steady und weaker. There
were not over .fifty loads on &alo and the
movement was rather sluggish , poor to
choice cows and heifers selling nt from $ L to
$2.80 , with the bulk of the decent stuff at
around SI. 80 and 12.2. ) . Calves were in good
demand and steady at from jaSi to J4.50.
Them was no particular change in the
market for rough stock and common to good
bulls , oxen and stags sold at from $1,50
to t'J.50.
The stocker and feeder trade was fairly
active with not much change to uoto. Good
to choice heavy feeders sold perhaps a shade
stronger , while light common stock cattle
were not in much demand , although hardly
noticeably lower. The demand was very
good from nil sources nnd a largo volume of
business was transacted. Good to choice
feeders are quoted at from f3 to $ y,50 , fair to
good at from ? 2.00 to $3 , with common and
inferior stuff at around f3 to $2.50. Uopro-
