Ono of the greatest projects known in the
history of rallroid building will bo com
pleted during the coming month. 'Lho bor
ing of the lUisk-l\anhoe lunnol on the line
of thr > Colorado Midland railroad from start
to finish will h.i\o occupied nearly flvojears ,
and iiurlng that time some of the best en
gineering skill of America has been en
gaged upon the work The success of this
enormous undertaking has been largely duo
to the untiring efforts of Chief lmlncor U.
II. Hrynnt of the Colorado MiiUind and
General Manager H. Collbran.
The Husk tunnel is uullt for the p.issnpo
of the Colorado Midland railroad beneath
Hagernian pass , one of the most precipitous
passes of the Coiitlncntnl divide. The east
end of the tunnel Is nt IlusH , 117 miles west
of Colorado Springs , J."J2 miles from Den
ver mid twelve miles from Lead-
vlllo. The elevation of the cast or
Husk poitalis 10,810 feet , and the west of
Ivanhoe portal , lU.lM'J feet. The crado 13
unlfoim throughout the entire tunnel , nnd
liscs from the cast end at the rate of 1.41
per 100 feet , or 74 45 feet per mile. The
total length from portal to uortal i ti.SSU M
feet ; the width is llftccn feet and
the holuht is twenty-two feet. The
total length of the Busk Tunnel
railway , on which the tunnel is located , is
tineo miles , wuilo the distance by the pres
ent line hoUvocn the uamo iraint.s is ten
miles , making a saving of seven miles The
highest elevation reached by the present
line is 11,633 font , while the highest point
icached hi the HusltTunnel railway is 10,048
foot , maklng-a saving in elevation of f > M )
feet. The maximum grade on the presult
line is8 per cent ; the maximum grade on the
Busk Tunnel railway is 1.41 per cent , being
a s iving of 1.5'J per cent.
The rock encountered in the tunnel is a
species of gray granite , sometimes exceed
ingly haul and sufficiently homogeneous to
enable the coaipany to dispense with the use
of timber. The mountain through which
the tunnel haa , howovei , been driven , has
been so badly shallot cd at some period as to
compel the use of timber the greater part of
the distance. Ins&mo places the fouuation
was so treacherous as to cause very serious
trouble. At ono point , near tholvauhooond.
a reservoir of liquid mud \\as lapped nnd
the mixture rushed into the tunnel in such
quantities as to endanger the lives of the
men. About bO per cent of the entile length
of tunnel has been timbered and will contain ,
when completed , about H.OUO.OdU feet , board
measure , of timber , exclusive of packing.
The average number of nicii that have
been employed on the work Is " 00 The cost
Of building the three miles of load owned by
the Busk Tti' < nel company when completed ,
will be in round numbers $1'J50,000.

Dr. C. B. Brierly of Boise. Idaho , is the in-
ycntor of a now machine for saving llour
gold which contains many features of merit.
Dr. Brieily but only recently secured a pat-
cut for it.
The machine consists of a slulco box of or
dinary sizo. into which ate sot in grooves
copper amalgamated scieens. The screens ,
any number of which may be placed in the
slulco. mo arranged in sets of three , each
set being a foot or such a matter apart , The
center screen of each set is placed in a - vertical
tical position and the oth r two are ar
ranged at oppositq anglqs of about 45 de
grees. These screens , ' ) are placed in a slant
ing position in order to present a , greater
surface to the water. In the lust set of
st reer s the meshes : u o about tw only to the
square inch. The meshes ate made finer in
each succeeding screen until in the last
three aic lorty to thy square inch.
The dirt is first put through a gii7zly era
a series of piinlies and tno finer particles ,
with the gold , pass into Iho sluice IKIK and
through the first set of screens. Heio some
of the gold is caught in the meshes of the
amalgamated copper who. As it goes on , passIng -
Ing thiough the liner and still liner scicens ,
all the gold , so the inventor claims , is s ived.
In order to make u olctnup , the screens are
removed and the amalgam brushed off. ,
Dr Brierly has srivon the machine several
tests on Snake river with gratifying le-
sulls , Hie assa.vs failing lo bring to light any
Iracesofgold in Iho taillnprs which before
being put through the machine were known
to bo thickly sprinkled with thoyellcnv flour.

It appears that the rustlers or cattle
tniovcs that cairied things with such a high
hand in northein Wiomuiff two years ago
still continue their dopicdiitions. Tlio hon
est bottlers who were at first auped by the
thieves and persuvled to condemn all cattle
men nro beginning now to find out the true
character of these "banditli of thu plains. '
arid propose to exterminate them. Referring
to Iho lawless acts of these rustler * ! the
Douglas Budget sa\s : "They hesitate lit
nothing. Fat catllc aio bulelieicd and the
meat is oaten and sold ; calves ate stolen
right and loft and in many cases the mothers
are driven off and shot down nnd left
to tot in order lo get them out of the
way of the calves ; horses aio run off and
brands on both horses and cattle 'doctoied. '
When ono of these thieves gets into tioiiblo
his friends como into court und unbluahlngly
swear to anylhing in order to clear him.
