SAX KHVNCISCO , Oct. II. A big scandal
tins been developed hero in the nffairs of the
Stearns llancho , a corporation , which at one
time owned 11)0,1)00 ) ) acres in California , and
is still ono of the heaviest lauded corpora
tions on the 1'aclllc slope.
The Chronicle prints a story of an Investi
gation of the affairs of the company. The
story is that a coinmlttco of three disinter-
cstod business men have been for three or
four months liivcstlffnliug the conduct of the
manager of the business of the corporation ,
Colonel U. J. Northam , who is n member of
the gox-ernor's stnlT , and one of the best
known public men in the state. The paper
states that the commltteo has about com
pleted its work , and In a few days will re
port to the stockholders. Tlio committee
consists of Barclay Henley , George U. Pol-
liDinus and 12. \ \ \ McOraw.
U is reported there will bo n majority and
aII minority report. The majority report , by
Henley and Polhomus , will state that $100,000
oldl the income of the ranch has boon llleRally
diverted. It is not churned that there has
been any cmU.v./.k'miMit , however.
hifc In his minority report McOran- will de
fend Colonel Northam in his action as ctis-
todian.of the property of the company. Tlie
late Moses Hopkins was prenident of the
company. It Is claimed Hopkins tfavo Col
onel Northam oral authorization to dispose
elM the property of the company and that
Xortbam has legal justillcation for all his
acts and a valid claim against the ranch for
all money salt ! to have been diverted from
the treasury.
Interested parties are very much worried
over the publicity of the trouble and tlio
facts are hard to Ret. So far as learned no
legal steps toward a settlement of the diffi
culty have been taken.

contain moro novel acenio offoots than any
otlior play thus far produced. Mr. Carter Is
a hcllovcr In roall.im , and In writing "Tho
Tornado" ho has succeeded in followinii ono
after the other in such rapid succession that
thenla not a dull moment in the entire pro
duction. In the first act a most vivid Illustration -
tration of a tornado is shown. Trees are
torn up by the roots , houses are blown down ,
debris illls the air and the euilro scene is
ono of the wildest that art can produce.
Other novel scenes nro the great ringing
scene , tlio collision of two ocean steamers
and the sluicing of ono of them , Chicago har
bor at night and a dissecting uooiu sccno In
a Chicago medical college.
The verdict of everybody who saw the
fnrcc-comedy success , "A Uallrond Ticltet , "
last season is that it is the funniest farce-
comedy scon in years. Tlio play this coming
season is interpreted by a company In every
way adequate to extract every possible bit
of fun from each scone. Arthur Moulton.
who has done excellent work with Franlc
Daniels and Willie Collier , plays the leading
coined } role , and Anna Caldwell , who sup
ported Donnelly and GIrani last season in
"Natural Gas , " plays thu loading soubrette
role.
Elmer E. Vance has a now theatrical In
vention. It is "Patent Applied For. " The
play is a bettor story , moro consistently
acted and peopled , has less comedy , hut will
bo moro talked about tlian his other be
cause of the great storm sccno In the fourth

A talso stage , a real boiler , a costly
blower anu numerous other ponderous
mechanical appliances are employed to make
this sccno go. In the last act there Is an in
teresting sccno In the room of tlio United
States court , where a forgery is exposed by
magnifying the signatmo. Wlllurd Leo ,
brother of Mr. Henry Lee , is playing the
lead. A clever child is always interesting
in a play when properly placed , and sueli a
ono is Little Mabel , who distinguished her
self in "Blue Jeans , " and apuoars hero as
mischievous I3essio. This evening opens an
engagement of four nights and a Saturday
and Sunday inatmeo at Uoyd's theater.
