CniCAuo , Sept. 18. Corn ! was leader today
In activity nml strength. Thu market for
thnt tciTiil advanced In splto of enormous
rcci'Ipts. Wheat had n good deal to I'ontund
with In the shape of Increasing primary
market receipts anil vhlbln supply , and It
suwumbod to ttio tune of alSo decline. Corn
had nlso much to boar up ttjalnst , hut the
bulls on thnt article , Instead of forgetting
all the strong features of the situation , ap
peared to have concluded that their buying
could bo more advantngoously done now
than If they -vailed until thn receipts dried
up. The tnarUot ohxedwitha gain of \ < , u.
Provisions were stiff on the yellow fever
news.
Wheat at the oponin ? was from Y15 lo * sc
lower and quickly settled off Vt ! more for
December , then ndv.tnced ; Vo , again weak
ened nnd prices declined from J c to % c.
lluctuatcd somewhat und the closln" < vai nt
from % c to 1 ; c lower for December t'.nd i,4'c
lower for May timn closing flRiiros Saturday ,
Kngllah cables were reported Jfil lower ,
there was nn increase ) of 1,100,000 hu. ln tno
quantity of wheat on ocean passage , the
shipments from India were larger , and It
rained , which wns not favorable for fall
plowing nnd seeding. There was pi-oily free
selling and the market tunica decidedly
weak when the visible supply showed an in
crease of 1,101,000 , bu. against an increase-
-jCn OOO bu. 'a year ago. Tno firmness in
corn was duo In a measure to the quite lib-
crnl shipments reported from this mar kot.
The Increase In the visible supply was
smaller than generally anticipated and this
had n stimulating effect temporarily. Shorts
purchased rather freely nnd the long inter
ests enlarged their lines. Opening prices
were Me lower , but soon n gradual , improve
ment of from ' to Jfo was gained. During
the middle of tlio session the feeling was
quiet and prices rather easy settling back
from ? n'c to Ifa At the decline the demand
improved considerably , especially for May
delivery , nnd prices rallied to outside fig
ures and the market closed strong.
There was a weak nud lower opening In
onts. Sales wcro nt from * a to } { o decline ,
but later n stronger feeling developed nnd
prices advanced from % a to J e , and the
close was strong at about the top , with a not
Rain of from > 4'0 to % c. Tracing was only
lair. The visible supply Occrcasod 007,000
bu , , but local stocks Increased 77,000 bu. last
week.
There were n few buying orders from the
outside provisions pit , but it was found Im
possible to 1111 them at the price they were
limited to for want of sellers. A bid of the
previous quotation mot with no response
when nn attempt was made to tilt a buying
order and prices were advanced upon very
few trades. Compared with Saturday night ,

WASHINGTON , Sopt. 18. The Virginia
campaign is uttrnctinp ; much attention
ainonp public mon in Washington , as
the 1 contest is going on just across the
Potomac and most of the ammunition is
being drawn from this point. A num
ber of democratic senators and members
will go into the state within the next
few weeks for stumping tours. Follow
ing the tldvluo of General Mahonc , the
republicans huvo niatlc no olTort to or
ganize or to present a ticket. They rest
contented with booing the populists do
what is possible toward dividing the
democratic ranks. The contest pro
ceeds with the republican element en
tirely eliminated for the lir.st time in
.years , .lorry Simpson lias already
stumped the state and ho will bo fol
lowed by Senator PolTor and others. ,
It is claimed by the populist leaders
that the filibuster and fight in the house
of representatives ever the federal elec
tion law is mainly for the purpose of
carrying Virginia. Colonel O'l'errall ' ,
the democratic candidate for governor ,
is one of the Virginia congressmen who
voted for the repeal of the silver pur-
cha&o law. This rained much opposition
in Virginia , whore the free silver senti
ment is very strong , and it threatened
to make his election doubtful. Then
came the action of Congie sman Tucker
and his colleagues in bringing to the
front the elections bill.
"Tliis was done for just ono purpose , "
said a populist leader of the house yes
terday , ' 'and that was to distract the at
tention of Virginia voters from the sil
ver question. O'Forrall's course on the
silver question was not 'approved by the
farmers and laboring men of the state.
IIJH vote for unconditional repeal was
taken as evidence that he had gene with
the president , sacrificing his own free
coinage principles for the nako of con
trolling the federal patronage. The
party inanagorH saw that they must
bring up some other ihsuo than the
financial question. This is why
tltoy insisted upon bringing the repeal
of the federal election law to
the front at this time , oven against the
ml vice of the president , when it will ho
two years before any election which that
law affects can take place. They uro
trying to make it appear that there is
something like n forte : bill issue at this
time , as the force bill IHSIIO is the ono
thing in the south which is sure to carry
an election. "
The democratic con 'rossmon from Vir
ginia are not alarmed by the populist
invasion of the atato. and declare thut
O'Forrall will bo elected by the largest
majority rolled up in u btuto election
sinuo tlio war.
