OIIICAOO , Sept. 8. The Activity In Uio
corn pit todny would hnvo created the Im
pression that there was n big market , but at
no time wns there a broad market on which
much corn coultl bo sold , except at a dis
count or bought except at u premium. The
opening wns very strong. The Kansas au
thorities made a statement that the condi
tion hud fallen off 10 ix > ! nts during August
lc the best corn section of the state. This
was a pointer to what other states with
oven less rain might show. The govern
ment report is duo next Monday at the
latest , and on the theory that this may bo
very bullish , the trade bid prices up very
quickly. Liverpool was Jj'd up on spot corn.
Yesterday's shipments wcro oO'J.OOO bu. ami
helped to offset the big receipts. With
drawals wcro 'JSi.OOO bu. There wns heavy
privilege trading lust night and I/wan &
Co. anil others intitlo a rush at buying early ,
presumably to inako the calls pood. On the
ndvuuco Schwartz put out n further short line
nml ho now , it Is said , stands to lose on pos-
albly 1.000,000 bu. The 'receipts continue
very heavy , much to the surprise of tlio
bulls. The receipts reached 70U cars , and
the estimates for Saturday are still larger
nt 7Tfi curs. The market opened with Jf@lc
advance , but soon afterward worked down
19 Jfc , rallied later Jffejfc , ruled unsettled on
rain tlii'C'itcning In the west , and at the
close had gained % ( < i > Xa-
Wheat was rather quiet. The market at
the opening was about K higher than yes
terday's closing , advanced c or so more ,
then beraino weaker and prices declined
? < f@Ke. advanced < fe. fluctuated fmniontly
within % c range , then advanced H'c > or to
top figures , eased off , and the close was about
% @Mu higher than yesterday. The
llrmncss was attributed partially to
the strength in corn , though the strong
Knglish cables , in the face of lower
American markets , had n favorable im
pression on the market. The Kansas state
bureau , which estimated the crop at 19,000-
000 bu. , against an estimate of 21,000.000 bu.
based on the government percentages of last
month , and a 70,000.000 bu. crop of last year
had some effect , as did also the fact that
New Voric canceled some more bank cert !
flcates.
Oats opened J.f@ } c higher , advanced }
% c more ana closed at about the top. There
was another uninteresting , dull day added
to the long list recorded , In the provision
market. What little business was done was
con lined to ribs , which closed at an advance
of Ttjfc for September , l c for October and
unchanged for January.
Estimated receipts for tomorrow : Wheat ,
130 cars ; corn , 775 cars ; oats , 290 cant ; hogs ,
15.000 head.

Tlio effects of the Improvement In the sllua-

everydopnrtinontof banking , and the clear
ances are showing largo Increases over those
reported any time last month. Currency Is
gaining In volume , nml mint banks are Rotting

ii3 been brought back Into circulation Is bo-
UK distributed through Investments and now

are steadily Increasing. The clearances of yes-

tions are that thin month will bo 11 good one for
speculators. Industrial , railway nnd mcrcun-
tllu Blocks are all selling at bedrock prices ,
owing to the closi'ticss of money , and these
stocks are bound to Increase In value as times
; row butter and money sets more plentiful ,
In recognition of Omaha's solidity , finan
cially , among eastern men It Is reported that
two large manufacturing concerns have been
Induced to locate bore , nnd they will be In full
operation within sixty Hays. As nil the de
tails hnvo not boon completed , the particulars
inimot bo given publicity nl present.
Commercial agencies uRfeo that the Im
provement In business circles began on the 1st

forcn since then. They note that the money
nmrkflts throughout thu country are more
healthy , failures are loss numerous , rosuniu-

Mote travelers nro belngsent out from western
centers nnd there Is Increased activity In
Homo manufacturing Industries both ut west
ern and eastern points. At other cities a hope
ful view Is taken of fall trade and there Is u
distinct revival of confidence. Tlmro Is a
stronirer tone to the market for some staples ,
notably wlicnt , cotton and pork. Toxllloand
Iron Industries show a larger proportion of
shutdowns than of resumptions , but there Is
n more I'hccrful tone In Iron and steel mar
kets. There Is more buying in cotton goods ,
though the market is still narrow. In rubber
goods there Is bolter demand. There Is con
siderable relief with regard to money , and at
other cltloii banks are becoming more liberal
In the question ot cash payments. Imports In
Auguu. decreased 30 per cent , and exports In
creased 3 per cent. The Improvement In feel

The situation was materially strengthened

TAX ASSESSMENTS.
Itciluctlon of Levies Under the Present
Counclliniinlc Flmincu Cominlttco.
Somewhere within the laws governing
cities of the metropolitan class is a provision
that in October the city council shall sit as
a board of equalization for llvo days for the
purpose of equalizing the valuations aud as-
scssmonts for the annual general levy of
taxes. The councils nave complied with
this requirement each year and did so lust
year.
An observer of the proceedings of the
present council , from the time D. H.
Wheeler has been chairman of the commit
tee on finance , might naturally Mnfor that
the fathers wcro weekly sitting as a board
to approve of the equalizations suggested by
that gentleman. Not in the history of previ
ous councils has there bcou such a wholesale
cancellation aud reduction of levies , and
there seems to bo uo Indication that It is to
end soon. The cancellations nnd reductions
include assessments on both real und per
sonal property , and the abrogate is grow
ing to such proportions that it threatens to
bankrupt the general fund of the city.
Slnco the 1st day of January the council
has either canceled or reduced assessment
valuations upon both real and personal prop
erty to the amount of nearly $100,000. Trie
figures ut hand show that such is the case ,
and that the amount will fall but a very few
dollars short of that sum. This represents
in taxes over $4,000 , upon a 44-mill levy. A
majority of the taxes canceled or valuations
reduced are for this year's assessment ,
although somodato back to ISS'J.
Included in the list is the Driving Park
association , the valuation of which was
$0,745.20 , the tax levy amounting to $ iri3. 0 ;
a reduction of the valuation of the
Standard Oil company from 20-
175 to $10,1175 ; United States Wind
Engino.nnd Pump company from $12.8'20 to
$0OlX ) ; Carpenter Paper company for IS'JU '
from $10.5IH ) to SO.fiOO ; and for IS'JS from
$10,475 to § 5,475 ; Omaha Tent nnd .Awning
company from ft.19d to ? 1,1U2 ; Uyron Heed
company from $20,000 to fii.100 ; Kqtiitnblo
Trust company cancellation of 8U.,000 ;
American Hand-Sowed Shoo company from
$10,000 to $3,000 , and a number of other in
stances , the amounts being .smaller.
The complaints regarding taxes como before -
fore the council und are referred to the com-
nntteo on finance , of which Wheeler Is
chairman. [ lo investigates the comuhtiiits
and makes his reports to the council , ami a
resolution signed by that gcntlomuu generally -
ally accompanies the sumo. There is never
nny debate over a reduction or cancellation
of taxes , ami what the chairman of the
ilnanco committee says goes without quos-
tion.

Some of the councllinon have hud tholr
eyes opened to the fact that as the council sits
each year as a board of equalization , previ
ous to the time that the lev/is made , that
then and there is the time for all complaints
to bo entered , und that they are growing
weary of several such grievances borne acted
upon at regular sessions of the council.

Vcsterday a hired hand was cleaning up

gasoline. Unfortunately ho mopped on n
parlor match which had been dropped on the
lloor , and a good sized bluzo was
the result. By the time the

streamed up through the iron grating in the
sidewalk nnd hud ignited the awning , which
burned rapidly. The heat of the burning
awnlug caused one of thu plate glass win.
dews to break. The loss on the stock was
light , about $100 , while the loss to the build-

MINNEAPOLIS , Sept. 8. The Northwestern
Miller says : The Hour output last week was
187,415 barrels , apatnst 11)7,075 ) barrels the
week before , and 180,150 barrels for tno cor
responding time In 1803. The output this
week will probably touch the 200,000 barrel
mark. Under the stimulus of higher wheat
there has oeen an appreciable Improvement
lu the demand for Jlour and millers arc
strongly hopeful of doing a better business
from tliis on. Buyers feel that prices are at
bedrock and are more inclined to take hold.
Last week probably as imioh Hour was sold
as was ground. Wednesday and Thursday's
prices were marked up and this at 0111:0
checked trade. Yesterday nnd today some
parties reported brisk buying again.
Foreigners usually bid too low to promote
trading. Ixv > freight rates , both on land
and ocer.n , have boon helping the millers out
considerably , though the increasing cost of
cash wheat is now largely swallowing up
this advantage. The direct export ; ship
ments by the mills last week were 71W3 !
barrels , agaiu t W,505 barrels the preceding
week.

County Commissioner Williams has re

been for several days , looking after road and
bridfe'o matters. Mr. Williams status that
harvest is in full blast on the largo seed

known. Hundreds of men are being given
employment , but still there Is a shortage of
help , notwithstanding the fact thai tlio work
Is easy and good wages are paid.
Mr. Willianib stall's that this year a con-
siUerablo amount of the harvesting Is done
by machinery , but that still there is work
for more men than can bo secured. 1 lie machine -
chino for harvesting cucumber seeds is tlio
latest device tb.it has neon invented and put

have been seoijed by hand , but this year the
flrms operating the seed fiirms have put in
