CHICAGO , Sept. 7. The corn pit today was
, the center of attraction. The continuation

rose to oarcly % c nbovo Its close yesterday ,
but It closed with n loss of both today's iind

on today's upturn. 'i'hj weather was still
dry and hot all over the corn belt , ntul tliu
Price Current's statement read at follows :
"Drouth In corn belt unbroken. This crop
Is Irreparably shortened. The surplus
states expected to produce the same aggre
gate quantity as last year , with a smaller
supply of previous growth. Consumption is
enlarging under lack of pasturago. " Out
side markets were up anywhere from J/c to
Ic. and cables came In with spot linn and l d
bettor and futures steady at ' .fd advance.
Kocclpts were not qulto up to the estimates.
The market opened llrm nt J cto J o advance
and under an urgent demand and moderate
offerings sold up quickly , with llttloroautlon ,
c to le.
There was conslderaolo outsldo buying In
wheat , but the advance induced free realiz
ing by parties who had been buyers the last
few days and a reaction set In. The influ
ences were nil moro or less "bullish. " Later ,
when the receipts In the northwest bccamo
known and the continental cables came In
showing lower prices abroad , there was a
less confident feeling. But the principal
reason for the decline was the dcsiro to ac
cept prollts on purchases made at lower
prices.
There was n liberal trade in oats and an
unsettled feeling. Prices for May , which
was the leading future , advanced % a In sym
pathy with wheat and corn , but when they
weakened oats followed , and all the advance
was lost. The outsldo trade was light and
the market had no good support on the
break. Shippers bought freely und sus
tained the price for ScptcniDor.
The provision market , as it has been for
days past , was practically at a standstill.
Nothing was doing locally and thorowcro no
orders from outside.
Estimated receipts for tomorrow : Wheat ,

one of the ollloors said , in an interview ,
that it had become uonorally known that
convict labor was being used in the
manufacture of its threshers and that it
was causing a loss of business. The
company , therefore , concluded not to
use convicts any longer. The beard of
managers passed a resolution ordering
the thresher company to remove all its
effects from within the prison walls
within the next thirty days. The state
of Minnesota , however , ronuiins in the
dilemma of having 400 convicts on its
hands without a stroke of work for them
to do.

authority from congress , under the gen
