Helena enterprise Is ainln ? to the front , this time In nn extensive placer mining pro ject In Hoavorhcad county. The company Is the Mountain Grasshopper Gulch 1'litcor Mining : company , owning nlno anil thrco- riu.Yrtors miles of patented pl.icor ground on Grasshopper ; crook , In Uoavorhoad county , near Bannock. Tlio section of country In which the com pany is operating U noted In the early his tory of the s la to for the vast amount of gold it turned out and the flnoncss of the product. All the old-llmo placer miner * of the state will recall the rlchncm of the Grasshopper crock bars , whlclt produced moro than $30.0D3,030 In gold. The gold was noted as bolng the finest In the state , going SlU.fiO to the ounce. All of this gold was taken from the bars , the guluh Itself cot bolng wonted. It has always boon hold by the placer minors that there was moro gold in the gulch tlmti had boon taken out of the bars , but the dlfllculty was to got down to bedrock In the gulch. The patented ground of the company takes In all the best portion of Grasshopper crook. It has boon thoroughly prospected , with the result tlmt the company knows It tins a pay streak of from forty to eighty 1'cot in width that will yield an average of $4 to the square Toot of bedrock , or $5U a day for every man em ployed. The liars were flrst worked in 1802 , and for ton years or moro there have boon efforts made to consolidate the Interests of those working In the bars with the owner ship of the gulch and work the latter. Ohfttiiulvs Surmounted. There were two difllcultlcs to overcome , however. Ono WAS that the owners of the bur. who used the gulch In which to dump , would not sell , and the other was oltorts to work other portions of the gulch had failed because of the difficulty of reaching bod- rock. Several years npo Prof. Gregory , 1d 1a noted English placer mining expert who had had largo experience In the Australian placer fields , examined the ground now owned by the Grasshopper Gulch company in the In terest of an English company. Ho made in most careful examination , prospecting thu gulch at frequent intervals , and as a result guvo it as his opinion , in n written report Itt that there was $ ol,000.000 ) in gold In the gulch. While negotiations were in progress for the acqulstion of the property by the English Iho alien law was passed * and that brolco up the negotiations. George F. Cope then began to negotiate for the property , and two years ago ho suc ceeded in buying up every interest of the men on iho bars , and after that was done it was not dinicult to got patents for the Itn tire nlno and three-quarter miles and organ ize the company. Then the difficulty to over come was how to open up the ground. The gulch ts almost a dead level , and all 10t tempts to got to bedrock by pumping had always failed. A few weeks ago the Grass hopper company determined to begin opera tions , and Mr. Cope went over to start up " 1 the work. Ho made a careful examination , and found , about midway in the gulch , lust the place to begin. As said before , the ground is almost level , and the general be lief was that this was the character of the entire nluo ana three-quarter miles. Mr. Cope foilnd a place where there was a con siderable clevatioiii.and before returning nto Helena ho was able to put a number of n > on at work to carry out the plans of the ann pany. The method to bo used in opening nJP the ground is to start a drain at the most elevated point. Uy running ii It.MX ) font it will strike bedrock. It is very advantageous ground to drift , us all the gold is cither on the. bedrock or within eighteen inches of it. The bedrock is from twenty to thirty et below the surfacjJ. Nearly all the gold on out in prospecting is the size of a er seed. After thc.drain is in and mining as bcgun.on . the upper part of the ground , the company will commence at the lower end of the property , near the Beavurhead river , and put in n'bedrock flume to work that per tion of the ground below the drain. Next year the company will glvo employment to > 0 men. tom It is not exaggeration to say that the com pany has the biggest placer mining project ! in the country. There is not. probably , an other enterprise in the country that has nearly ten miles of patented virgin gold- bearing ground so rich as thorough prospect ing has shown the ground of thu Grass hopper country to b < ? . I'aylng Silver Mine. Tlio No. 1 mine at Alnsworth shipped thirty-three tons of ere to the smelter at Tacoina , which gave returns that KO to show there nro mines in this country that can be worked at a hundsomo profit if silver is at bedrock prices. This mine was leaded tills sprinR ) > y u company of gentlemen from Bait Lake City and a small force of men put to work in a systematic manner , ena portion of the ere taken out being con centrated nt the mine by hand power. The smulter returns on the amount shipped are as follows : First-class concentrates , $353' per ton ; ere not concentrated , $1-14 per ton ; carbonates , $11U per ton. After deducting cost of transportation from mine to the lake. freight and smelting vharKos , the shipment netted the owners as follows : First-class concentrates , S105 per ton ; sccond-grado concentrates , fiKI.70 per ton ; carbonates. J01.4" per ton ; ere not concentrated , $53.GS : per ton. This means for silver alone , and that at the low prlco of 73 cents per ounce , as the ere ouly ran a small percentage in load per ton. 11 , Stevenson , who Is ono of the company that holds the lease as well as the resident manager , returned from Tucoma and spcaits lu terms of pralso of the courteous treat ment , lie received ut the hands of thu smelter management ; also that the sumplo assay mudo by himself and the returns given by the smelter only differed to the ex tent of four ounces , that dillercnco being in his favor. The smelter has no trouble in getting suftleiqnt ere to keep running , secur- : iiig-FinuU.lots from nearly ull the western states. The No. 1 mine is owned by the Hovol- stoke MJiilhe and Smelting company and has heretofore boon worked in an expansive and unsatisfactory manner. The above returns , therefore , go.to provu that careful mining by practical mcu has us much to do with determining the prollts derived by the owners us that of the richness of the prop erty.
