A spirited advance In grain occurred today on buying orders from no ono knows whore , but sufficiently heavy to glvo the shorts a complete fright. The trade naturally looked for manipulation to account for the bulgo. Interest centered on Itoatn. Ho had ma-do losses on the short side , and today wai thought to bo manipu lating on the bull t .do. Ho had behind him , It is said , Orr , Mitchell , Driver , MoDjugall , Champlaln , Nester and 0110 or two big commission - mission houses. This was force enough to lift prices without natural Influences , but some thought the market w.ts up on Us morlts. Wheat at the opening was about ? c lower than yesterday's closing , became strong and advanced l , ' o , then eased ( iff J < e , again ruleu very strong , and prices were advanced l } e , then ruled easier , and the closing was nbout lo hlgncr forScntctnborand Jfchigher ! for December than the closing llgures of yesterday. It was reported that the Now Vork banks were apt to call a largo portion of the certificates now. Closing cables were higher , and thooxportclcarances were again quitelargo. . Corn was ehlolly Influenced by the un broken dryncss. The government weekly weather report was looked upon as bullish and this had a stimulating effect. The market opened at nbout yesterday's closing prices and after holding steady for awhile advanced } < fe to Ic , reacting { fa later be came firmer and at the close1'had gained J e to 1'jfu. Shippers were good buyers. Oats were liriner with a fair trade. The olTcrliiFS wore not largo and wheat and corn being higher , prices were easily advanced e to J < c , and the close was firm at the top. A fair part of the business was in changing from October to May. There was a littlu more business in pro visions than there has boon for a day or two back , but the total have been easily squeezed into ten minutes of ordinary active trading. Closing prices were generally from fie to U."ie higher than last nlirht , the greatest gain being in September pork. October pork is IfkJ down. The material ad vance in the prices of securities on the Stock exchange uuriiiK the lust two business days ; , based though they were upon more solid foundations than are usually to he found at the bottom of speculative movements , in duced the bear clement to make advances upon the hull forces this morning , Their attack was well concerted and , coming at ilra time when reall/atlons of prollts wore being made , was moro effective than if it hail not received such assistance , The absence of any largo foreign orders and the weakness of American rall > vay in lndou also hulpad to unsteady the dealings and had it not been for the generally fair conditions anil the strength of the bull pojl , tlto reactionary in- ( luoni'os would not have been so successfully checked us they were. As is usual when the bears take the offensive , rumors affecting unfavorably the stocks to hu attacked are at once set allont , and today yytis no exception to the rule. 31. Paul was made the subject ot one of these pluus of campaign , It being given out that the company was a borrower of money In Ivondon at exorbitant Interest and that the dividend would be passed. A prompt denial I of the rumor was made by President Miller , but meanwhile thu stock hud declined 2 per cunt from last night's closing , Tliero was u subsequent rally of 2 per cent , which [ was followed hy a reaction hy which the recovery was almost wiped out , the Ing price being only } i per cent above thn est price. The Issue of ! 5,000 of clearing house certltleates was looked upon us unfavorable lo thu general opinion as to an easy money imirkot and thu cancellation of $500,000 I of thesecertltleates did net compensate for the unexpected Issue of nearly fciMJ.OOO of them. All of thesi ) disturbing causes had the effect of unsettling the speculation , which was large in volume , After : i morning de cline , which went through the entire active list , there was an afternoon rally in which not alone was thu decline recovered , but tin many instances hlirher figures were made , , in the lutu dealings prices itucluated on nar row isolations , thu tone of the market being uiuettled , and so it closed , Among tno stocks which show a ilccllr.o as compared with yesterday , uro ; tit. It had been gener ally expected that a very largo block of the certificates wpuld bo canceled , but J2CiWO ; moro wore asked for , This wtis"a matter of surprise and disappointment , especially In view of the growing case ' .n tltno money rates. Thu reasons for the issue nro .not known. The truth about tlu loan cortill- catns is however , that the stronger banks nro making nn effort now-to accumulate cer tificates In their own balances , paying out cash instead , This means n profit , since each bank is allotted dally nt the rnto of 0 per cent on till certificates , , reported in its hands , If a bank could' Accu mulate again all of Its own cor- tliicates , It would of course , both pay anil receive the 0 per cent , anil the time of cancellation would boa matter of Indiffer ence. Good 2-year-old owes and wethers brought only Sl.'JO per head ; 4-year-olds , U.'t cents per head ; nice straight spring lambs , 80 to 115 cents per head. A year ago these would readily have sold for $2.f,0 , 1 nnd J2 , respectively , The farmers present said that with a prospect of free wool staring them In the face they did not care to invest In any more sheep. If the clip of this year is as larco as that of 1SSO , it is easy to see that the democratic attack on the tariff has taken $141,080 out of the income of wool growers.
