capacity has been almost doubled to what It
hits boon In thu past.
A reporter for TIIR Hnn win shown through
thoyni\ls by AInnaRor Uabeook ycstcnlay
nnd h'uou nu idea of the extant ot the Im
provement already started. On the tilled
ground Just wcsfnnn south of the Exchange
building pens that will hold 0,000 hogs nro
being Inillt. On the south stdo of these
pens will bo constructed u twenty-foot nlloy
or drlvoway , which will make it i-onvxuilont
to trans for the hogs from ouo quarter to
another. Just west of hero Isvhoro the
Toxns division has boon located. I'rlor to
this year biit few or no Texas cnttlo h\vo :
been shipped direct to these yards , but since
an iirrangoment has boon made by which
South Omaha gets thu sumo freight nuo ns
Kansas City and Chlcaeo the receipts have
uvcrngcil n train load a day. The capacity
for receiving these big follows from the
south has been somewhat limited , but when
tlio pruseut Improvements that have been
started nro complutod the capacity
will bo nmplo for four train loadi
a day. Another handy feature about
the Texas department Is the now
driveway that is being built to all the
packing Mouses from these puns. Thora always -
ways lias been a driveway to Cudahy's , but
new ones are now being built to Swifts ,
Hammond' * and the Omaha. This long chute
is built entirely outside of the stock yards
company's grounds , but connects with thu
pens up In the Texas division. In the pasl
these Texan steers had to bo transferred to
the packing houses in cars , but under the
new system they can bo driven direct from
the pens to the packing homos Just as they
are needed.
Over on the north side of the Kxchango
building the capacity for handling cattle is
( icing doubled. J'ho iormor capacity was

are put on the pens now almost cnmplutod

scales arc also boiui : placed hero. A chute
will bo built across the street from thcsa
now pens to the old ones up on the hill , mak
ing a complete connection , so that stock can
be transferred to any part of tlio yardi
in short order and without any Interference.
The new scales are No. 7.
All this work was started some ) tlmo ago ,
but when tlio Jlnanum ! Htrlugeney struck the
country all the improvements were stopped
and the workmen wcro laid off. All hands
have now been sot to work , and Manager
Babcoclr says that nothing will bo
lef , standing still until the whole
work is completed. T io water has
all been placed in tlio pens and
so far as the cattle conveniences are con
cerned this work will bo completed this
week. It has cost the company u big sum
of money to make the improvements , but the
business demanded that It bo done. In thn

Omalia yards with the last improvements
are way ahead of any In the west. " *
