THE OMAHA DAILY BKIfe yflATUKDAY. AUGUST Z > 5. 181)3. ) COMMERCIAL AND FINANCIAL There Was -flraml Swing to All Markets on the Board Yesterday BEARS PRESSED THE " "I I ING EARLY tVhen > I2Teryllilnc nn the floor AVn Over sold the Trails Dot Soinn Good Hall Netv * In AVhent Which Alnrmoil the Hltorti. CniCAon , Aug. ! ! . " > . There wns n grand " iwlng to nil markets on , the Hoard of Ti-ntlo" today. The bears pressed the soiling curly nd forced prices down In all grain pits. When everything on the door w oversold , Iho tradn got some good bull news In wheat , which alarmed th'u short * and started specu lative buying. Wheat got such a rally that ill other markets followed. Following n Dad break the first h/iur , when the lowest prices of this remarkable year were made In ievcr.il options , thorn was a strong recovery , which closed everything above yesterday's figures. The volume of business was double that of my day for two weeks. Wheat broke from W c to fi'J ? o for IScptomber , with n rally lo from OOJfc to COJ e Jim at ttio close. This was nil the moro remarkable , ns Liver pool cables wcro the sickoLt of the season , quoting spot wheat ! M lower , but exports > f wheat and flour for the day reached KV > ,000 bu. , and the local money conditions rvcro Improved. This started the shorts ind they bought furiously the last hour. Corn touched 30' c for September In the break , and rallied to 37c. I'ork and ribs sloscd 40c over last night. Lard Is un- > hangcd. Wheat at the opening was about % c higher than yesterday's closing and prices further advanced from , ' c to ' { o , then do- : llncd ! ffc for September and le lor Decem ber , became stronger and advanced IJtfc for September and from l e to IJjfe for Decem ber , held llrmly nuil the closing was about Me hidicr for September and f c higher for Uccenibcr. The early show of strength was due to tlio fact thata piomlnent stock house In New York , which It was supposed yester day , would fall hail made satisfactory arrangements and did not suspend. Hut the advance brought out free speculative offer ings , considered as a raid on the market to enable shorts to cover , anil this caused the decline , assisted , no doubt , by the dis couraging advices from abroad. Cables rrcro bearish.especially those from Liver pool. Some parties were looking for a rather Dullish statement of the Vienna congress and It was believed that the vote on the silver * bill Monday will help the market some. Local receipts continue small. In corn , operations wcro not confined so ex clusively to local traders , a very good busi ness being done for outsldo account. The market opened weakiwithofforings ; very free , l good share of which was for Now York and foreign account , and under this selling pressure sold oft J c. At the decline some of the prominent sellers of yesterday took In their profits , and St. Louis also covcrol large lines , which caused the price to react from % to le , after which the proceedings changed but little , ruled steady and at the close gained a fraction. There was seine talk of a largo line of long property held by a prominent local operator being put in market , which was instrumental In causing the early depression. Oats showed more life. The opening was In sympathy with other grains. There was liberal buying , 275,000 bu. being taken. No. 2 cash was taken forshlpment.it Wc. This caused a firmer feeling in September and prices ad vanced % c and the other months Improved } c and tlio market closed steady. There was a little stir In provisions early when It was thought Armour offered both September and October lard down to en courage selling of ribs. There ; ras still moro stir later when a local operator got short on cash ribs and tried to buy Sep tember ribs for protection. The ttado" got after him and run him in. Estimated receipts for tomorrow : Wheat , 61 curs ; corn , 550 cars ; oats , 800 cars ; hogs. 10.000 head. The lending futures ranged an follows : Arilclc-B. Open. Hhrh. Low. Close. The feature ot the stock market nt the opening todny was n decline of 2 per cent in Louisville it Nash ville , duo to the receipt of n lower quotation from Txmdon and talk of n striko. The soil- urs In making nn attack on this stock evidently intended to cover in other shares , but the general list hold well nnd.itvns . not long before the shorts ovlncod n disposition to cover up. As the day advanced nnd it \vas seen that the currency situation was Improving , the bulls took courage , nml by placing fair sized buying oracrs in various stocks succeeded in turning the current In an upward direction. Kceno , Connor nnd the two Wormsers wcro credited with taklnc a prominent part In the speculation for n rlso. The advance rniiscd from 2J { per conl , with Sugar , Chicago Has , General Electric , the grangers , Ixmlsvillo & Nashvlllo and West ern Union in the load , 'llio belief that the hank ntntcmunt tomorrow will show u further material Increase in the reserves did much to stimulate the bu.vlmr movement. Shortly before the close Distillers broke sud denly from B3-V to 20. ! { on advices from Washington that the payment on tnxcs on spirits In bond would bo enforced by the sec retary of the treasury. The general market rcnctoiJ # per cent from the highest , but the undertone was strong. Among the specialties Edison Illu minating was the feature and passed through most erratic fluctuations. The stock , after soiling nt SO , dropped to 71 ? * and jumped to 78. Olio of the features of the day's opera tions \vns the increased demand for low priced stocks , many of which ruled on u higher range. The Post says : A good deal hangs , however - over , on the action next week of the savings bank depositors. The requirement of with drawal notices , it will ho romouibprcd , was generally put In force .llll.y 111 or August 1. A very considerable proportion of these notices was given under n thirty-day rule nnd the tlmo is now nt hand when such withdrawal may bo mado. The outlook is problematical , except so far as concerns the savings banks' ability to pay whatever i < demanded. Through the sale of securities or the pur chase of imported gold ( which proved the cheaper of the two Importations ) , the banks have gained an exceptionally strong posi tion. If the depositors demand payment , in full , they will bo paid ; but the process would indirectly bo unfortunate. If common sense has returned sufllcienlly to prevent whole sale withdrawals the savings banks will bo able to release their money in rcasonablo quantities upon tlio general loan market. Otherwise hoarding will simply bo extended. The following arc the closlngquotntmns of the leading stocks on tlio New York exchange - change today : bid.
