CUICAOO , AUK. 23. The principal fc-nturo
In whom today , beiMos a dcclltlo of Jfu In
lu iirlco , was the narrowing of tno spread
between September nml December from
7fo tlown to 7J. There hud been nn Im
pression abroad that December wheat would
commaml a premium of 10o per b\i. \ under
which numerous spreads have boon mailo m
anticipation. When a wuakenliiB In the
premium began to threaten tlio spreaders
today they nrndo haste to reverse their
trades and a Jfc reduction in tlio premium
wns the result. Corn was weak on antici
pated heavier receipts and closed J c under
last nlRht's quotations. There was no In
terest In provisions.
The weakness In wheat was attributed to
very small clearances , and not altogether
favorable cable advices. There was also
omo liquidation by weary longs and alto
gether a dull and heavy fooling prevailed.
lx > cal receipts are small , but In the northwest -
west they are larger , with Indications that
the now crop will soon commence to move.
The reasons given for the narrowing of the
premium between September and December
arc that there Is moro money being placed to
carry the wheafaud the statement by some
of tlio bankers that there will be no illlllculty
In carrying September deliveries to Decem
ber , and the buying of shorts for September
and putting It out again for December. The
Department of Agriculture reported that
the crop of India was 00,000,000 bu. larger
than last ye.ir. The opening was from > fo to
J < c lower than yesterday's closing , eased nit
nnothcr 'fi'e and then advanced from J o to
S e for September and 1'fo ' for the Decem
ber' futures , held steady , and the closing
was from , ' f to 'fo ' from the bottom.
Corn was fairly steady until the estimated
receipts for tomorrow were made. These
wer suniciently over tlio recent avenigo to
have considerable effect upon a market
which stood in need of something to support
In oats the demand was light , though
prices declined from > c to J c. The close was
weak at nearly tlio lowest point , with a not
loss of from Jfc to J e.
Under the Influence of the receipts of 40-
000 hogs at tlio yards the provision trade
dragged. Later in the session Armour put
brokers in the market to bid for pork and
ribs and the decline was soon ovcivomo by
the support thus afforded It. Lard did not
appear to appeal to Mr. Armour's sympa
thies. Compared with last night , pork
was up 25o and ribs 5c. Lard is lli' e lower.
Estimated receipts for tomorrow : Wheat ,
100 carscorn ; , 4G5 cars ; oats , 200 cars ; hogs ,
80,000 head.
The leading futures ranged as follows :

Hoes There was another heavy run
today , about 10.000 head. This , following
Tuesday's ' big run , and making for the two
days over 18,000 hogs , a thing ; that has very
rarely happened lu August , caused a big
drop In prices. Chicago had about 40,000
fresh hogs on sale and the marltot was bad ,
so that although there was a very active
shipping inquiry , no less than eleven ship
pers being on the market for supplies , sellers
had to submit to a reduction of from 80c to
3'Ju in prices for all grades. Local houses ,
especially packers , were free buyers
at tno decline , the Omaha nnd
Cudahy houses taking over 5,300
hogs. Buyers all , paid a stiff premium
lor light and light mixed , hogs , sales being
all the way from : § p up to S.V.iO , although
nearly all the hogs selling at $5 and over
were more or less sorted , that is , from one
to half a dozen ro.ugh or heavy hogs wore
thrown out. Hca\\y and mixed packing
grades sold largely at 54.75 and $ -1.80 , with
food mixed heavies lp ) to 1.90 and common
and throwouts at .from $4.40 to $4.70. There
was little change lu.tho .market throughout ,
although the close , whs perhaps the weakest
point. The bulk of the hogs ( practically
everything changed , hands ) sold at from
$4.75 to 5-1.90 , as against ? o to $5.30 Tuesday
and $5 to $5.80 ono/wpck ago today. Kopro-

Opinions of Western Governors on the
I/it < Mt Hiirebritlneil Proposition.
NEW YORK , Aug. 23. This morning's
World publishes opinions from a num
ber of western governors upon the prop
osition of a commercial division of the
United States. The World telegraphed
to each of the governors these questions :
What do you think of the petition of
the Kaiibiia olliciuls for a commercial di
vision between the west and the east ?
What would bo the result of the pro
posed convention of governors to con'
aider this ?
Governors Stone ol Missouri , Lowoll-
ing of Kansas and Ponnoyer of Oregon
boldly favor the convention. The others
heard from oppose it.
Governor Levelling suggests that if
free coinage fails , the Mexico silver dollar
lar bo made a full legal tender. Gover
nor MoGruw of Washington says any
man who proposes aeccoeaion of states
is as much of a traitor to the llag of
freedom today as ho was in 1801. Gov
ernor Nelson of Minnesota expresses the
same sentiment. Governors Colcord of
Nevada and Crounso of Nebraska have
no confidence or sympathy in thosuhemo.
Governor Boies of Iowa says it is unwise
and does not , think any considerable
number of governors would attend such
a convention.
