CHICAGO , Aup. 18. The prospect of delay
In financial legislation seemed to put the
Hoard of Trade In the dumps tolay. The
decline in wheat since last night amounts to
Ic , and torn and oats are each J o lower.
Provisions lost from 0c to 40o In pork , lOc to
12J < d In laril and from 15c to ST c In ribs.
Wheat at the opening was about the same
fts yesterday's close , onscd off } { c , then ruled
firm and prices were advanced % c , bccnmo
weak , nnd this time declined 1"jo for cp-
tembcr and l' < c for December , then ruled
steady for some time , became firmer and the
closing was Jj'u from the bottom. An early
report made the clearances from Baltimore
050,000 bu. , which inatlo n little temporary
Btrcngth , hut later advices cast doubt on the
authenticity of this report and the result
was to weaken prices. A statement wired
from Washington wns that the last national
bauic statement showed a decrease of $11)3- )
000,000 In deposits and $11)7,000.000 ) , In loans.
Trndo was light. Most of the business
was In the way of changing September Into
December. Cables were of an unfavorable
tenor itnil helped to depress values , but the
chief cause for the weakness was the lack of
trade. There was rather moro disposition
to sell than buy. it was reported that
Germany was sending money hero to carry
wheat , nud it was also rumored that W.OOO-
nco moro gold had been withdrawn from the
Hank of ICnglaiid for this country.
Whciit docs not appear to move out of Chicago
cage as it should , and thcru Is some talk of
the bulk of It staying hero all winter.
Corn was quiet and easy on moro rain in
the interior itnd tbn weakness In wheat.
The offcrlncs , while not very liberal or
urgent , exceeded the demand. The close
watt steady at Inside prices.
In oats u little moro pressure to soil was
observed , mm prices receded ? rfo. the mar
ket closing weak at about the Inside.
The provisions market weakened under
the receipts of HO.OOO hogs , 1'ork und lard
closed nt the lowest point of the day's range ,
but September ribs recovered 10c from bottom
tom prices. Armour and the American Pack-
lug company bid up ritis toward the closo.

STOCKS AND IIONUS.

Dull Vuntitriliiy.
NEW YORK. Aug. 18. The market for
oourltlcs was extremely dull again today.
The sales of stocks footed up OJ , ' ' .U shares ,
uud tlio trading for outside account was
probably higher thun on tiny previous day
for \vcoks and months past. Less than half
n dozen stocks showed Important lluctua-
tlons and In tlieso Instances the movements
were most erratic. General Electric droppad
W Pcr cant to Hl.i.f , rose to ) ! ) ) , broke to
87 J , rallied to 11'JJ.f ' and close J at US ) . ' . Man *
liiittiin showed a not loss of 2 per uant uud
Lake Shore nnd Northwestern were 1 per
cent , while Distillers gained 1 per cent nnd
Luckawanna uud Hock Island \ $ to ) per
cent.
During tlio afternoon the heavy arrivals of
gold , thu announcement of further engage
ment * tor shipment to this side and Wash
ington advices that thesllveiuesticm < | would
bo brought uu for discussion In the senate
Tuesday , led to n rally m the market , but
the hears sold n' , thu higher rungo of quota
tions nud a reaction ensued ut the closo.
Speculation loft otf generally ureakur in
tono. There Is a very general indisposition
to operate , pending dotlultu information in
regard to the silver legislation and oven the
professional traders nro losing Interest in
the market. CJoncrul Kluctriu was traded iu
to the extent of 15,000 shares. No other
stock ligurod for as much its 10,000 , and ut
intervals the market was positively iiog-
lected.
Thu Evening Post says ; The day's news
wns not of an unfavorable character. It
comprised the arrival of 4,200,000 gold and
thu engagement nf f-1,000,000 ut the Dank of
I'Jngland largely. It seems , for the itrcount of
Canadian banks. Thu local stock market
was too dull ami too purely professional to
merit detailed comment. It Is hardly too
much to say that the really active nnd vari
able money market has been shifted to
counting rooms of currency brokers , The
regular ttnio money und commercial paper
markets nro practically closed ,
Call money is Indeed abundant and its
abundance explains suniclcntly the existing
atock speculation , but this retloots merely
the tcmixmiry use of credits based ou the
ImiHirted pold. Probably today's revival
of the premium on gold for future delivery -

The f rush s apply of cattle wus lighter than

Thursday's 10,000 run , was moro than the

Inquiry for light and medium weight hogs ,

The rnngo was the widest in months ,
nearly $1 , extreme figures being $4.i5 ; and
$5.30. Light and light mixed hogs sold at
