COMMERCIAL AND FINANCIAL
It Was Largely the Stock Market that Dis
turbed Grain Yesterday.

CHICAOO , Aug. 14. U was largely tlio
stock market that disturbed grntn today.
The action of operators In Wall street anil n
break lit quotations for Chicago cable securi
ties operated to unsettle the trade. Com
pared with Saturday night , whe.it tonight.
Is from HO to Jtfc lower. Corn Is down from
% c to % C. Provisions wcro quiet , but quota
tion * were pushed up from 12 c to 20c.
Wheiit nt the opening wa about % c to lo
lower , cased off } ( c , then rallied from } tfc
to Jtfc , 'declined ' Jfa , again became strong ,
Advancing from ; < c to life , then became
wcrtlc and declined from Jfc to J e , held fairly
ntcady and the closing was within c of
the bottom. Offerings were quite largo and
consisted of wheat bought at the lower
prices on which sellers wanted to realize
their prollts. Now York sold quite frcoly.
The difference between September and December -
comber narrowed considerably , duo to thr
fact that a good many carriers bought the
former and sold the luttor against It. The
reaction to top prices was duo to higher
cables , the largo shipments from Chicago ,
the small output from India and the decrease
of nearly 1,000,000 bu. In the amount on
ocean passage. The subsequent slump was
on the sinnll decrease.
Corn at the opening1 showed Ji > loss aftoi
soiling off from # u to MC more , rallied , sell
Ing up from % o to Jtfc. declined from xc u
Ic , ruled Rh-ady and closed J o from tin
bottom. There was a sort of general hall
called In this as In the other markets fron
the buying In force on Saturday. The move
rnont to tnls market was heavier. Hccelpt :
were tWO cars and for Tuesday , estimated
D-10 cars.
Oats weakened with corn nnd closed froir
tfc to ? sc under Saturday's last figures. The
sample market , however , remained ox
trcmoly firm.
It was the dullest day In provisions thai
has been seen for some timo. Two or threi
trades comprised nil the transactions li
pork and lard , and the business in ribs wa !
far from heavy. There wcro about 10,00 (
more hogs than hud been expected , and tha
caused n slightly easier feeling to start with
but there was an impression abroad that ho |
receipts must necessarily run light for semi
time to come , and that gave a firm undcrtom
to the trade.
Freights wcro slow and rates for vesse
room good.
Estimated receipts for tomorrow : Wheat
180 cars ; corn , 540 cars ; oats , 320 cars ; hogs
1,500 head.
The leading futures ranged as follows :

A CHIEF WITHOUT A TRIBE.
How Wild Hog's ItiinU of Clirytnncs Was
Kxtormlnated In 1879.
Wild Hogis the name of a Cheyenne
chief , albeit ho is a chief without a
tribo. About fourteen years ago , says
the Gloho-Domocrat , his name was
known all over the United States , and
for weeks millions of people looked in
the morning papers daily to see what ho
was doing- . For a time he 1111 ed western
Kansas anil Nebraska with terror. Now
ho resides at Pine Ridge agency , and is
one of the poorest and most dilapidated
Indians on the reservation. In January ,
1870 , Wild Hog and the tribe of Chey
enne Indians of which ho ) vas chief ,
were removed to the Indian territory.
Becoming dissatisfied with their now
homes , they broke out , and under the
leadership of Wild Hog , struck out
northward through Kansas and Ne
braska. Many depredations were com
mitted on the way. The Indians killed
about forty citizens , outraged ten women
and destroyed nearly $10,000 worth of
property. Wild Hog always claimed
that this deviltry was the work of a few
young bucks who were beyond his con
trol , and that they escaped to the reser
vation. During the llight north
ward the United States army wns al
ways about ono day behind the Indians.
Finally Wild Hog and about 200 war
riors , together with their women and
children , wont " into Fort Robinson and
surrendered. Inducements were offered
the Indians to return to the Indian terri
tory , but they refused to do so. Finally
they were disarmed , but in the effort to
do so several soldiers and more Indians
were killed. Wild Hog was put in irons
and confined in the triiurtl house. The
other Indians , including their wives and
children , were confined in a long , low
log building which had previously been
used as a barracks. Upon their con
tinued refustil to go back peaceably to
the Indian territory , un effort was made
to subdue thorn by starvation. They
were deprived of food , water and fuel
and closely guarded. But they wore
tough , and oven after several days ,
which must have been ones of suffering ,
were still obdurate. It was supposed
o that they were completely disarmed ,
5o but in some manner they had been abk
5o to retain u few revolvers.
5o After a few days of seemingly quiol
o subjection the vigilance of the solulcrt
' was'in a measurcfroluxod , and the gtwrt
reduced to six in number. Suddenly , ir
the night , these were shot down , ovorj
one of them being either killed outright
or disabled. The Indians then rtishet
out and filed up Soldier creek canyon
The breaks and hills of Pine Ridge were
about half a do/.on mllon away , and i
was the hope of the Indians to read
them before the sleeping soldiers coult
overtake them. It wan a wild rac-i
across the ice and snow. Many of tin
Indians were barefooted and loft a trai

and children , they made slow progress
The garrison , urouhed by the shot

their ammunition there were yet a fei

A motherly looking old lady got on a
Niagara street car at the corner of Porter
ter avenue the other afternoon , says the
Buffalo Express. She was plainly
dressed in black , her hair was as white
as snow and her face was sweet and
pleasant. She walked half way up the
car and found a seat. As soon as she
was Heated she fumbled in a black silk
bag that she carried on her arm and
produced a nickel. This she held in her
nand waiting for the conductor to como
along. The car was well filled and the
conductor had plenty to do. lie came
through tlio car nt Jersey street and
hurriedly collected the fares. Ho
skipped the old lady. She was ready to
pay him the nickel , but she did not olTor
it to him when ho passed. After ho
md gone by her conscience reproached
preached her , evidently , for she half
icld out her hand as if. to urge tlio lure

notice tlio halt-proffered faro. Then
jogan a mighty struggle botwcon the
sordid and the Christian sides of the
woman's character. She know that she
night to give the money to thoconductor ,
nit she doubtless argued to herself that
.t was his business to ask for it. She
felt that every person in that car know
that she had hold out her faro and she
looked around with a defiant air as
much as if to Bay : "Well , what if [
aid ? "
Her look of defiance didn't last long ,
however. She mulled weakly and
dropped her eyes to tlio tloor. She
started to hold out her hand and tncn
pulled her arm back. She looked
around the car again and this time she
blushed. Then she sat bolt upright ,
evidently having como to an understand-
iiiK with herself and dropped the nlckol
into the Mack silk bag. It looked vorj
much as if the sordid side hud won ,
The conductor came through again ,
The old lady looked straight ahead

She was extremely Kelf-conbcious. I
