parties who construed the government re-

toady and closed with a tiillo gain.
Trade in o.its w.is liberal and a stronger
feeling , duo chiefly to the advance In wneat

colved some support at the lower prices
which prevailed , the tendency was easier.

Wool Mlirkut.
HOSTOV , Aug. 11. Thcro has been no im-
initant change In the wool situation hero.
Iho depression Is as pronounced ns over nnd
there h is been llttlo or nothing doing. There
Is a general feeling of uncertainty , and both
luiyerx and sellers aio very careful In their
movements. Tliero Is still no confidence nnd
no fooling of security nbout the future.
As a rule , the message of the presi
dent to congress mot with the appro
val of the wool trade , as far as Its
summing up of the financial distress nml Its
recommendations for lellof are concerned. It
was felt that with the repeal of the objection
able cl.iusos of the Hierm in slhor act there
would bo some return of confidence and an
easier money maikat , but it IH
also felt tlmt prospcctlxo tariff
ohnngcs would bo detrimental , and there
: ould bo no full tecovory of normal
business conditions In the country until It
was fully known what , If anything , wus to bu
done with IJio turllf.
A local tialo paper says : This latlorun-
rnitilnty has done about ns much as the
financial stringency to depress the business
sltuitlon. Mnnuf icturoisdonot know which
my to move. It would h i\o boon well If tlio
president bad enlUhtoned thorn nnd the coun
try at largo us to when ho desired that con-
in > ss should take up the t.irltl question.

NATURE'S LOVB MAKING.
ISirds nnil Insects Muxt Do Their 1'rettiest
VV linn Courtlni ; .
The wooing of birds ib most refined
and graceful. Love tunes their respec-
: ivo pipes , and they beek to captivate
their mates by their favveotetit notes und
most varied vvurblingb , bays the Boston
Globe.
The wood pigeon charms his ludy love
jy a series of aerial evolutions and n
curious Happing of his stiong vving
feathers , pulling his breast and tenderly
cooing.
At mating time the plumage of male
birds is rewro handsome than at any
other period indeed , bomo birds
assume different colors in the spring.
\ cllow hummers charm their mates
by dibplaying their tail feathers in the
form of a fan ; starlings chatter in the
sunslnno to show Iho metallic beauty of
their breast feathers , and bvvallows
circle and double in graceful flight
before their lady loves.
Bright shells , llowors , feathers and
grasbes aio laid by tno bovver bird at
the entrance of his partiior'd totreat ;
and tiny humming1 birds woo mot
assiduously , showing off their lovely
hues and engaging in fierce combat with
a posbiblo rival ; oven bringing nectar
from choice llowors for the delectation
of their fairy brides.
lien bit ds exhibit all the vagaries of
their so v and pretend to bo indilTotcnt
to the exertions of tholr admirers.
Progs have an original vvay of love
making and as soon as evening shades
fall commence to croak loudly to their
mates , sometimes great numbers of thorn
combining in one unmusical chorus.
Courting among injects is often a very
elaborate alTuir. A male spider will approach
preach a female nnd amu&o her for bomo
time with his antics. It is s.iid that ho
twirls around and around , crosses his
legs , erects his body and executes a sort
ot mniy dance to excite her admit ution.
She is a very vicious lady and not al
ways pleased with his love making ;
sometimes ho finds himself obliged to
ward her olT , for she has a painful mode
of showing her displeasuio , and if HIO
entirely disupprov'os of his attentions
will full upon him und rend him to
pieces.
Ono species of spider is said to have a
novel waof making love , the sexes
communicating by means of btrands of
web stretching from one retreat to the
other a sort of telephone , so to speak.
Glow worms , acooiding to some natur
alists , use their luminaries as love sig
nals. The /oinalos of ono species boat
themselves among tlio gutss , while the
inalos , attracted by the light , dunce at
tendance round them.
Concei ning fishes the sticklebacks
occasionally toboit to har.sh treatment ,
attacking .ho females with open mouths
and elected spines. As husbands tholr
bohuvior is certainv ! ecccntiio , lor after
the female has dopoaited her eggs
within the nest that ho haspropaied
for her her lord und master drives hot
uvvay and proceeds to hutch them him
self.

AN EIiEOrJUC LOCOMOTIVE.
Completion of n TIilrij-Ton High Speed
Motor.
The electric locomotive for use on
steam roads has finally become an ac-
comnlished fact , and in a few days a
thirty-ton high speed motor of this kind
will bo exhibited at the World's fair.
It was constructed in the Lynn shops ol
the General Electric company and will
go out to Chicago in tow of a tegulur
train. IL H built to the standard steam
railroad gauge and its dimensions aio
bomowhat bimilur to the steam motois
now in use on our elevated roads. It is
10J feet long , Hi feet high und 8 feet 4
inchcb wide.
Tlio motors are supported on springs
resting upon the frame of tlio machine ,
and the armatures are mounted upon
hollow bhufts through which the axles
of the wheels pass , ami to which they
are connected by special couplings. The
cub is of faheot iron ami is built upon the
frame of the locomotive directly over
the moving pai'ts. It is symmetrical in
appearance , and it is 80 curved as to
oiler icceding surfaces to the atmos
pheric pressure. Tlio windows allow an
unobstructed view in all directions.
The interior of the cab is finished in
hard wood and is lighted by a cluster of
incandescent lamps. Inside this cab are
the electric air compressors for opoi at-
ing tlio air brakes ana the whistle anil
the controlling switch. Above the frame
of the cab at each end are placed the
electric headlights.
The electricity will bo taken up by the
motors according to prevailing condi
tions. The trolley may bo , under cer
tain chcumstancos , the method adopted ,
while under others the current will betaken
taken from conductors running parallel
with the Horvieo lails by meant of a run
ning wheel or a sliding shoo contact , as
in the case of the intramural railway at
the fair or the overhead railway at
Liverpool.
The locomotive is expected to attain a
normal Bpcod of thirty milod an hour.
It is primarily intended for elevated
work and for light freight tialllcaud
passenger borvico.
The adoption of the electric louoino-
tivo will , of course , bo gradual , but for
places comparatively near each other ,
and whoi o tralllo is don o , it is peculiarly
adapted. It will probably llrat bl > used
in elevated railroad serviceand in cities
like Now York , Brooklyn and Chicago
should bo hailed with delight , doing
away , as it will , with the present evils
of noise , coal , smoke , dust , cinders ana
Hying sparks that attend the motors now
in use.
Thin invention is the first practical
stop tovvatd the adoption of electricity
altogether us a moans of scouring ul.no-
lute rapid transit. The electric locomotive -
tivo is siibcoptlhloof a higher speed than
that already obtained by our uiiht mag
nificent sti'ain locomotives , for while
there is always a limit to steam produc
tion and inili/.atlon dependent upon the
structural and operating jonditioiiH of
tlio liii-omotlvo , the limit of bpoed of a
revolving armutiuo is uiyot unknown.

the renders of Harper's Weekly three
years ago by Frederic Remington , who
was on terms of intimate friendship with
the young cavalryman. Lieutenant
Clarke was also known to the leaders of
the Weekly by reason of the soveial
valuable articles that ho eonti ibuted to
It on the German army. Ho was noted
in thu cavalry as a haul rider , a hard
lighter , and a most /eulous olllcor. In
the campaign of 188(1 ( against the
Apaches ho distinguished himself by hia
gallantry , and VMIS awarded with the
medal of honor. Mr. Remington , in the
article alluded to , thus speaks of the
gallant action which won the medal for

most other men would bo lortllo enough
