SNIVELEY RECONSIDERS HIS RESIGNATION
OOK I JltnU Ho .Mnzxloit or They Will < n to

Wnuteil MuRlo City
Mand.il Wolfson , a peddler , jnit tn nu
nppoaranco at the police court last evening ,
carrying with litra a largo and licnvy load of
wrath. Wolfson says ho h u quiet and
peaceable citizen , but that there are persons
living over in Drown park who are different
in this respect.
Wol'son was over In that neighborhood
yesterday aftcniopn pciUUlnghls vegetables ,
when hu mot. two men to whom ho had never
boon introduced. The follows "joshed" him
mid llnally picked up sovural ajiples
and other truck , which they took
front his load , mid llrcd thcmiat XVolfson's
hoad. Ho c.itliurcd up his lines and tried
to escape , when the men. ho says , inado a
liisihulu upon him with tin cans , brickbats ,
rocis.s ami whatever they eould lay their
hands upon. Upon the strength of this
statement lo Jiulgo Fowler a warrant was
issued for tlio arrest of Joseph Soillaeek mid
Mlko Slosor , and an oilk-er wis .stunt out to
look up tlio parties waiitod , Slosor gave
ball for his uppoaraneo this morning.
. .TilllfTViuiUil. .
No steps have yet boon taken to hixvo a
jailer appointed for the police station , There
is no regular man assigned to this work for
either day or night , and vigorous protests
are heard as a result on every hand.
"Thero should bo ono ofllcur , " said a city
ofllclal last evening"whoso duty It should bo
to look after tlio court business and act
as jailer. There should never bo a moment
when there is not an ofllcor at the station.
The court ofllccr could easily attend to the
duties of a jailer , for there is not a great
deal to bo done la that lino. If there \vns a
regular Jailor and ono who attended to his
duties there would not be any Jail deliveries
and the city would not bo put to the expense
of repairing the station over" once in a
while.
"Tho sanitary condition of the station is
another thing that should bo looked into.
The jail is so fllthy right now that a hog
would not prosper In it. It smells and is
reeking with vermin. " A reporter for Tin ;
HUE was shown through the Jail last night
and found tlio nbovo assertion to bo a mild
description of the facts. One cell was so
foul that a man could not exist In it. The
men who work on the streets in serving out
a sentence are coin polled to sleep on benches ,
Siilvoli.yV11I Ituciintilili-r.
When the members of the elty council and
the mayor read in Tin : HUE that John Snlvo-
ley was about to resign his position as city
dog catcher they forthwith went to John
and persuaded him not to for ono single mo
ment entertain the thought of throwing up
bis job. W.vman told John that ho was the
only man the city had overbad vvholiadmado
a success of the dog business , and that the
couucll would stand by him to tlio letter.
Mayor Walker told Snlvoley Unit lie would
not accept his resignation , and it is now
pretty certain that ho will stick to the busi-
iiesi to tlio enU of iho present administra
tion.
. [ sow that it has boon discovered that
there is no dog ordinance in existence anil
that a new one will have to bo passed at the
next mooting of the council , ono will no
doubt bo framed that will suit all parties
concerned. It is a thankless Job , and out
that does not give very heavy returns to tlio
catcher , according to Snivcloy's statement
Looking for a .Matt Dug.
The city dog catcher failed to Jlnd th
alleged mad dog yesterday that bit tin.
dnuglkter of H. Tilko on Twentieth and
\Vyman streets. Ho scoured the neighbor
hood for hours and no dog of that descrip
linn could bo found. Ho tired on two other
canines up there which ho fohnd without
muzzles , however , and says he is goimr to
Iteep up this racket until every dog in South
Omaha is killed that does not wear a muzzle.

COUNTY SCHOOL FINANCES.
County Supprlntoiiilrnt Hill Completes thn
Work of AppnrlliMiIni ; tint Cunt.
When County Superintendent Hill closed
his books yesterday forenoon , It was with a
feeling that the school finances of the country
districts of Douglas county wore in good
shape for the starting of the next school
year , which practically opens with the com
ing of next September.
Mr. Hill had Just completed tbo work of
apportioning the funds for the llrst six
months of the present year among the dis
triots , and allotting to each its proportion ,
based upon so much per capita tuvordlnir to
thu returns of the census takers of IS'.IJ ,
when they found XI.IMO persons of school
HRO in the county , among whom the sum of
$ ! ) , : ! ) ( ) . ( has been divided , giving to each
person 81.73 cents.
The money thus apportioned comes from
the folio wine sources :

The division of this money Is made accord
ing to the terms laid down In the statutes
ami is not understood by the general public.
H is done In this way. After the amount of
money has been reported to the superintend
ent ho divides -one-fourth
- - of the entire
amount , equally among all of the districts
and then the balance is apiKirtinncd by : il-
lowing RO much to each child of school age ,
which last year amounted to 81.75 cents ,
The two amounts are then added and the
district treasurers . are notlllod of the
amounts to which their respective districts
are entitled. In the second division , on ac
count of tbo largn number of children in this
city , Omaha gets the lion's share , but on the
llrst division of tbo funds It stands on an
ccnal footlin.'with the smallest school d is-
in the county ami receives exactly the
. .mo amount. The following figures shc'.v

The next npportionrnnnt of funds will bo

census inkers who eomplotoJ their work nnd
