A-week ngo It was noted that there -was
uvidontly n moro confident feeling nmonff
. ImslncM men find It Is iinfo to ny that "that
feelltiB still exists and perhaps In a somewhat -
what greater degree. Seine business men
nro still looking upon the dark sldo , but
their number Is growing smaller as the sum
mer wears nway. Kvory ono appears to
realize the fnet that tncro Is no real cause
for hard times In Nebraska and that thus
. /nrnt least It .has been a case of ' 'moro '
Beared than hurt.1'A jobber remarks : "Tho
uplcndld' crops of the past two years to
gether with the high prices paid for farm
producb have put Nebraska farmers In
splendid condition. At the present tlmo the
prospects for the coming crop could hardly

ilowovor , business li not what Jobbers
would llko to sco U. Kvory onu is holding
hack and waiting to sco "how things ore
coming out , " 'J ho retail merchants are or
dering nothing that tho.y do not absolutely
have an immediate demand for and are re
ducing their stocks to the lowest point pos
sible. The Jobbers are generally doing the
name thing. There nro'today buyers for local
houses still remaining in thu city who have
been accustomed , In previous years , to spend
the month of July buying goods in the east
ern markets. If the reason for the doluy Is
asked the answer Is Invariably ' 'wo ' are wait
ing to sco how things are comlne out. "
This delay In buyingls noticed nnd freely
commented upon In eastern marliet centers.
The Now York llullotln remarks that In the
dry Roods line buying for fall requirements ,
which out-lit to have madn good progress by
now. has been Indulged in on a most con-
acrvutivo scale and experiences of both
commission houses and Jobbers so far this
season are far from being' equal to the
nvcrago experiences in previous years.
HcjHjrts from various sections of the
country show that the actual consump
tion of dry goods by the public has not
fallen off proportionately with the short
niro in the demand at wholesale , so that Iho
J present condition Is less the result of an ar
il rusted consumption than of u changed pol
icy , voluntary or enforced , on the part of
distributors. Uu.vors are deferring their
purchases in the largo markets Jus ; as long
as possible , and where compelled to pur
chase are providing for Immediate require
ments only. In the menntimo they an ) sell
ing all they can , thus contracting their lia
bilities , which Is a hopeful feature of the
situation. Meanwhile manufacturers are
Uniting the changed conditions moro or loss
embarrassing , and a number of them have
within the past few weeks closed their fac-
_ torlcs , although the extent of this move
ment has boon exaggerated la many quar
ters.
ters.Tho
The situation 1s the same in the grocery
lino. Jobbers the country over are carrying
, small storks. It is said in Now York that
* exceptionally few orders h.vvo boon placed
for canned goods , dried fruits and other com
modities , for which advance engagements
are usually quite heavy during the months
of Juno and July. Speculations and o'pcra-
tlons bordering upon speculative lines have
boon avoided us far as possible. Market con
ditions , that would ordinarily prompt liberal
buying , have had little or no weight against
the general determination to carry no larger
slocks or order ahead to greaterextoiit than
well delhicd wants dictated.
The jobbers and "retailers of tMe-wesVaro
nil following the sumo general policy. They
are reducing atocics and delaying purchases.
Whom confidence revives they must neces
sarily become heavier buyers of various
lines of goods , since , from all accounts , their
stocks are insunicient at present to meet the
requirements of a brief period of active busi
ness.
ness.Local jobbers are predicting a great rush
for goods when business ouco starts. Some
day Nebraska merchants will crawl out of
their cyclone cellars and discover that the
tlnnnclivl storm has passed nnd then will
commence the race to stock up again. It
may uot bo an easy matter for every mer
chant to got just what he wants , just when
ho wants It , as there will bo so many
urgent and pressing demands to bo
satisfied. The retailer who pays his
bills and docs not attempt to avoid mooting
his obligations on the plea of hard times ,
will bo the onu whoso demands every jobber
will bo anxious to 1111 promptly.
A dccrcnso in the clearings of Omaha dur
ine thu past week was anticipated and that
it reached IB percent was no surprise. The
jobbing trudu during July of lait year was
phenomenally largo , owing to the fact that
the lateness of the spring caused much of
the business that usually comes in Juno to
bn carried over to July. Had there boon no
- try of hard time * this year , the clearings
this month might even then have fallen be
hind the corresponding month last year.

nnd in another instance four-fifths of the

The idea that August 111 will witness

A sample of Florida peaches , packed in a
tin can , has been received hero. The fruit
arrived In excellent shape and was pro
nounced superior in flavor to the California
fruit. Fruit that will stand shipment by

keeping qualities.
Eastern papers are saying a good deal
about the various secret nostrums which nro
claimed to Increase the yield of butter. The
Agricultural department of the government
has recently issued n bulletin exposing thuso
frauds which have boon palmed oI ( onto the
farmers of the wont to no small extent.
The butter Industry of the United Slates
is of immcnso Importance. In round num.
hers there are from to.000,000 to $15,000,000
worth sold annually in each state. In 1800
Illinois produced DSJOOO.OOO pounds , worth
nbout $20,000,000 ; Wisconsin , STi.OOO.OOO
pounds , worth $9,000,000 ; Iowa , 100,000,000
pounds , worth $ ! lono,000 ; Minnesota , 42- ,
000,000 pounds , worth $8,000,000 ; Michigan ,
40.000.0UO pounds , worth 7CX,000. ( )
UiBqutio probable , says the Minneapolis
Produce Bulletin , that wo shall haVe pretty
cheap potatoes this year. Of course a great
many farmers were led to put in the crop by
the extraordinary high prices which prevailed -
vailed last year , and up to the present tlmo
in ' 1)3. ) There is yet , however , some oppor
tunity for crops becoming damaged , but the
probabilities nro that the majority of the
yield will pull through and bo all right for
an immense harvest.
It was not many days ago that tomatoes
were scorco in Omaha , but they were not to
bo had. The growers in Illinois und some
other sections think that Chicago is the
only market in the world and they ignore
every other point so long ns that market will
take their stuff. When Chicago is full they
dump their surplus into Omaha and ether
smaller cities. Now tomato growers have
glutted Chicago and all of a sudden turn
their shipments hero with the result that
this market is swamped.
An Omaha commission man recently re
ceived n letter from a farmer who had an
idea that he would like to ship direct to a
commission house , asking what were the
terms on.which consignments \vcro handled.
The commission merchant nniwored per
cent. . " fly return mall came another latter
saying : "Do you mean that you will send
mo 10 per coat in return for what I ship and
keop'tho balance ! " "That rooster can't fool
mo ; hpi.s'nnAJd shipper and no farmer ; ho
has becri > litjlng / | 19 KansasjCity. I'll bet a
dollar , " said the commission man.
"Tho commission business is a much greater
thing than most pcoplo realize , " said a
fruit dealer. . "Thero is no jobbing line in
the city , that pays' the railroads , the express
companies and the city draymon as much
money a the fruit nnd produce commission
men.rho wholesale grocers may handle
moro cars but they do not pay as high rates
and the total in money is not as largo. The
minimum on an iced car of fruit from Cali
fornia to Omaha is fliio. Ouo fruit salesman
alone in 11 vo weeks this summer sold Cali
fornia fruit that paid freight charges
amounting toIXX ! ) , ) . "
The number of poor eggs that are coming
into this market at the present time is sur
prising. Ono commission house a few dajs
ago received a shipment of eighteen cases
that were all spoiled , and the inspector
ordered thorn dumped into the river. Every
ease that arrives contains moro or less * of
spoiled eggs. While the warm weather is
to bo blamed for eggs not keeping better ,
shippers could save a good deal if they would
send in their eggs as fast as they got them
nnd not wait until several cases have accu
mulated. Some shippers hold their eggs
waiting for some ono to offer thorn a price
on track , and then if they do not got what
they want for them they ship to a commis
sion house , with the result that there will
bo a heavy loss from sailed eggs. The only
way to avoid this loss or reduce it to a mini
mum is to wait for nothing , but koeo the
eggs coming , a case at a tlmo. as fust as
they nro brought lu by the farmers.
The name ' 'orango" is from the Latin
nurum , meaning gold or of gold color , says
an exchange. The fruit was originally a
small , bitter berry , about the size of a com
monearly Ulchmond cherry , und very scody.
It has been cultivated
lu limdostan from n
very remote period , nnd wns taken from that
country to Arabia and Persia in iho eighth
or ninth centuries. Ills said to have re
ceived little or no attention from cultivators
of fruits in either of the countries lust men
tioned above prior to the beginning of tno
tenth century , there being a tradition that
it was a "cursed" fruit sent by Mohammed
to destroy the unfaithful. In the tenth and
eleventh centuries the horticulturists of
Oman and Syra began the cultivation of the
tree in earnest , the fruit growing
under the name of "bignrudo. " By the
end of the twelfth century it became
abundant In nil the countries of the levant ,
the returning soldiers of the cross ( crusaders )
bringing It with them on their return from
Jerusalem. It wns well Known , but not ox-
toniivoly cultivated In either Italy , Spain or
Franco before the middle of the sixteenth
century , 400 years after its introduction into
thu first named country , the hindrance being
n survival nnd an addition to the old iinli-
Mohuinmmlan tradition , viz. : That the usa
of the fruit would cause the partaker to en
roll himself with the religions of Islam
whether ho desired or no. The Spaniards
finally attempted and succeeded In cultivat
ing it in their West Indian colonies , and
from thcro It found Its way Into Florida ,
Central America , Mexico and California ,
always improving in size and llnvor.
If country shippers could realiio how mucli
trouble uud annoyance was caused by care
lessness In weighing the produce which they
ship to market they would certainly take
more pains to bo accurate. Th . othur day ix
local commission man received a shipment
of three barrels of butter , the gross weight
of which was ten pounds less thau thu not
weight glvt-n by tbo shipper. The difference
lu the weight tnudo u difference in the re
turns of $10. When the commission man
discovered the discrepancy ho had the but
ter and the packages weighed and oirdlfTer-
out scales so that there could bo no possibil
ity of any mistake , but ho could not rnako
the weights hold out with these given by
the ihlppor. In spite of all that the com-
luiailon man may do or say , ho will never bo
able to make the shipper bcllovo
but What ho was swindled , Some shippers
by some moans or other got u good deal of
water in the butter packages , perhaps they
put a piece of Ice on the butter , Of course
when the commission man receive * the package -
ago ho take * out the butter only and'wolghi
up the package , water and all , ns ho cannot
afford to pay butter price * for anything but
butter. The shipper who neighed the package -
ago when it wo * dry and with no water

NEW YOIIK. July 22. The demand for dry
goods continues nt the minimum so far us dully
transactions uro concerned. A case of goods
at n tlmo Is taken every dny or two by the
same buyer rather than order enough to lust n
week or two. This is an extreme hand-to-
mouth business , but there Is enough of It to
idiow that tbo consumption of fabrics Is going
on steadily and that , the dealers are short of
stocks , ns every demand Is for immediate
shipment. Thuro wus today also more In-
iiulry for the near future , and some ugunlH
think that the Nlniallon Is brightening up.
This hud reference ( 'specially to bleached
goods for the manufacturing trade. Drown
nnd colored cottons nro without , change. Other
articles uro more active In movement than de
mand In completion of former sales by deliv
ery. The volume ot suit's charged up is fulr.
