Liqnidatiou Knocked Wheat Prices to a Point
Never Before Hooched.
BENSATIONAL TURN IN THE MARKET
Borne of the rnctori In th * Day' * riuotun.
tloni Attrlbutoil by Miiny to 1'a-

Cereal block.
CitiCAdO , Juno 00. Soured upeculfttors hail
to pay GO percent interest today for money to
carry wheat. liquidation wus on a slupundous
tcnlo. It wa * Iho lust day before the long an
ticipated .Inly delivery nnd nrirkod aerUls In
the wheat trado. Number * of unlucky traders
bail held on tu tholr July wheat , hoping for
finmu bnlgo or spurton the bull nida to lot thorn
out. When the last day arrived nud Poptom-
bcr was nt too much of a premium to buy , tlio
only thing loft was to throw July wheat wholo-
sulo on thu already wick market.
This nindon , sensational turn In the market
mid iL'Miltrd In knocking prlcos to u point
never befoio reached. Tlio low iccord hns
been broken ninny times In the pastsU wroks ,
but at no tlmo so abruptly us today. There
wns a disposition to lay the blame of tlio nliarp
break In July to u published article , paying
there wus much "skin" wheat In Chicago
liunsns ; that U , wheat which buroly graded
No. 2 , but the toul trouble hcnmed to bo the
illlllculty In obtaining funds for carrying pur-
jm&i's. The spread uuundcd to 7\c \ , u re-
inurkablo dllTrreiice , which tempted not u few
capitalists to curry the wheat us u big ln\ost-
tni'iit ,
Little attention wan paid to ordinary In
fluences In the market. Kverv ono was preparing -
paring for July doll\fry today. The extrn-
urillnuty Hlnmp yesterday exhausted tunny
nun gins und struck many stop-loss onh < rs
which brought liirgonmounts of w hcu t Into the
inarKet. Thcopcnlng uas about the same as
jrrstunlny to fc ( lower for July and prices de
clined quickly 1H < ' < then rallied Ic , ruled
weaker and tlm rloso was from lUcto l ? o
lilwor thun yesterday , though yostorduy'i
Jlgttrcs were the lowest pii-xlonsly kmiivli In
the history of the Chlcugo Ilo-ird of Trado. As
fur us September wheat wns concerned , It.coon
recovered Its tone and for thu greater part of
the session It was worth as much or a shade
inotu than ut the close of the day before.
Good ruins wcro ugaln qulto uunurHl In the
Eprlng wheat country and cablegrams guvo
the maikct tin support In their quotations of
the foiolgn inuikut. Thuro were , however ,
luimeioiis foieUn Inlying orders on the mar
ket und u good deal of wheat wus reported
worked elf line today. Thcro was a rumor
that us much us 2,000,000 1m. for foiclgn ship
ment wcto being negotiated for during tlio
session , but up to the close no moro than 300-
UOO lii. ) wcro definitely placed.
Atlantic hhlpiiiGiitH were liberal , amounting
In wheat nnd llout to ubout 576,000 bit. , ox-
clusloof exports fiom Now Orleans. A sale
of 300.0001m. of wheat for shipment at Min
neapolis wus one of the reassuring items to
the bulls.
Armour & Co. were nt one tlmo liberal
buyers of July and sellcrsof Hoptembor.whlch ,
lll.uwlbo hud u.steadying effect. Counselman
& Co. were among the heaviest sellers of July
wheat. The tumble In securing freight preVented -
Vented ninny of the buying orders for foreign
account from l/cliig / Hied , It Is said.
The chief sbpportcrs of corn drew out nnd
left thu cash und ot the dual to tuko cnro of
Itself. The consequence wus Unit July nnd
BL'ptembcr. which had been sailing with u gau
of only 2c between them , widened out to 3 { c.
Counselmun & Day weio the biggest Individ
ual sellers of July corn. There wus u nervous
unsettled fcullm ; rogttrdlng tomonow's do
ll * cries , but for September the market was
llrm nnd closed ut 42c , compared with 41con
the duy bufoio. For July 38&c wus the latest
price , computed with 39c yesterday. Thuro
wus u good Inquiry for export.
The feature in the oats pit wns the soiling of
July and buying of September. The difference
decreased from Ic to lc. July wus thu weuk-
est und declined 5 c from yesterday's close ,
While September held steady.
The iinlelest , market on the floor was the
pro > lslon deal , und the prices wuru well main
tained ugulnst the Influence of heavy long re
ceipts. Currying charges from July to Sop-
tcmocr werulieuvior than o\er. 1'ork brought
a premium of $1.27 > i for September , bird HOc
and ribs 70c. Closing prices for September

Wool Markat.
I1O8TON , June 30 , The demand for wool has
been u little bettor the pust wcuk und the
volume of business larger. The mills that are
running have been obliged to muUe MI mo pur
chases und on this account theio have buen
some fulr sales , lint there Is no disposition ns
yet U ) buy ahead ot immediate/ necessities ,
even though prices huvo got down to n point
where any further concession seems out of the
question. Dealers huvo been advising their
customers to cover their wunts. That some
liu\o followed this advice Is seen from the
liugo movement , but thcro nio n greut inuny
who will not buy , und us most branches of the
woolen goods muiketnro quiet just now , there
IN nothing to urge buying. The tlnunclul situa

Decided Improvoinont In the Tone of AVnll
btrcct Speoulntloa.
Nnw YOIIK , Juno 30. There wus u decided
Improvement In the ton ? of Wull street today.
Although money at Intervals ruled ut high
rates , the fuct that tlm clearings house bunUa
hud announced their Intention to take out ull
the loan cortlllcutcs necessary to provcntan
acute stringency In the money market did
much to rc.storo confidence. The hours re-
nouud their raids upon the market at times
during the duy , but each decline brought In
buying ardors und sharp advances ensued.
The lowest figures touched bhowed losses
varying from U to U4 per cent from the llnul
quotations of yestorduy. The announcement
that the General Electric company bad
declared the usual quarterly dividend
ot 2 per cent , although It bus
been persistently rumored for some
tlmo that the rule would bo 14 per center
luss , hud u good effect. The directors of the
Delaware , Lackawanna & Western declared the
usual quarterly dividend of 1'i per cent , and
the Chicago , Clovi-land , Cincinnati & St. Lonib
unnouni-esa dividend of IH per cent on com
mon. Simultaneously with this nowscumo re
ports of gold ongapeinonts In London for ship
ment to this side , which , together with llbor.il
purchases for Iturlln und London account ,
started a sort of stampede among the shorts.
Accoidlngto reliable estimates London imr-
cliased upnurds of 16,000 .shares. Manhattan
jumped up & ! 4 per cent , Amctlcan Sugur 5i
percent , Luckawunna 34 ! per cent , Chicago
Gas 3 percent , Gonural Klcctrlc 2 per cent.
Western Union 2JJ per cent , and St. Paul 2 j <
percent. The remainder of iho list Improved
JJ to 2 per cent. Late in the day when money
wus bid up to 60 pui cunt , thorn wus n reaction
of U to 2 percent , but the demand rovt\cd
again and the market left off strong in tone.
The Post says : Tlio notion'of today's stock
market Indicated that the week's crisis hud
been safely passed. 1'rlcus rallied at.lliston
London buying , then sold slowly olT again and
llnally set In for u steady und continuous ad-
vunce. The sit nation bus been very grave und
heavy failures , whether on the Stock exchange
or In the mercantile trade , would In the last
fmv days have excited small surprise.
I'uiilc , by Its nature unreasonable und Im
possible to forecast , hud twlco bcon discounted
und run beyond the real Improvement In the
fuctors which should huvo govi-rncd the sltuu-
tion. The hands of would-be speculators wi-ro
tied. Thu marcuntllo community , now for
four months cut oir from regular bank uccom-
modutlon. wus confronted dully with now und
serious dilt-minius. In such u situation It Is not
easy to augur for the future. Undoubtedly
the safe passage over of the July disbursement
season will contilbnto to reviving conlldenco.
If money , ufli-rnuxt Wednesday , loans with
reihonuiilo freedom , less of It will bo hoarded.

Commlsuloncrs rospomlea when tliclr name's
were called ycstcnlny morning , mid althouRh
the session was of short duration , It wns
Icngtliy onouRli to make Mr. PmMock , the
government director of the Union 1'aclflc
railroad mid member from the Uttlo I'.iplo
district , dodge the Issue nnd cr.iwl Into Ills
hole , from which ho did not o.norgo until the
stnoUo of battle had bocn wafted unity.
The mooting was the Inst of the Usual year
ami w.i3 hold principally for the purpose of
IMssliiR the appropriation shoots and ccttlng
really to start out with n clean nnd now sot
of books , but Incidentally , before getting
down to business. Chairman Stenborg an
nounced that It would ba n peed thno to tms
upon the Union Paclllo brltlgo c.iso , ns nil
of the members were present. Tnli
announcement ovldently stnn-lc terror
to the heart of the gentleman from tlio banks
of the turbid I'uplo , for in loss than n second
ho was out of the room. Four members
gu/cd nt the shadow of 1m retreating form
and smiled , but none of them ventured a re-
murk. During the next halt hour the com-
nrnsionorslio remained In the room wcro
tit cuss , with the chairman in liii scat , wait-
inn for the return of the ab.scntco nivl any
combination of fortunate circumstances that
might arise. Slowly tlio Index linger of the
clock moved along toward the hour of noon ,
and just prior to its reaching that point the
government director of tho" Union 1'acilio
dropped In to look around and take n tow ob
servations. For him that was n fatal mo
ment , for scarcely had ho li.irUenuil tlio
doorway before Chairman Ktenborg ro-
miirlecd : "Tho clerk will call the roll. "
Mr. I'aodock looked s.ul and anrv in the
satno look , but ho responded by s'tyinir that
ho was present.
Mr. Williams moved that the commis
sioners convene as a boml of cnualUiUlon ,
and the motion prevailed. Then the chair
man stated that the Union P.icilic Uulltr.iy
company had returned the Dou-'las county
end of its bridge at $ SOUJv > , anil that tlio as
sessor had raised the valuation to $105,000 ;
that Tax Commissioner Scrihner for the ro.ul
hud entered a protest , claiming that the as
sessor's valuation was altogether too high ,
as compared with the valuation of other
property of a similar character and located
in the immediate neighborhood : that the
board had given the matter careful consider
ation aim was ready to take Html action in
the premises , ono way or another , niut that
it was desirables that each member should go
upon record.
AInlor I'uddoclc IVcikoncil.
Me. Llvesoy moved that the complaint bo
placed on lllo , and that the valuation remain
the same ns returned by the assessor. There
was a hearty second to the motion bv botli
Van Camp and Williams , after which the
clerk was instructed to call the roll to iinti
out If the commissioners would stand by the
action taken while sitting as u committee.
They all voted "ayo" with tlio exception
of Mr. Paddock , who bcggod to bo excused
from participating in the proceedings , say
ing Unit there was u quorum and that his
vote was not needed. The chairman de
manded that ho should vote , it being tlio
duty of every man to go on record that tlio
public might Know where ho stood on every
proposition that interested the entire com
munity.
Mr. Paddock declared that ho was in a
position where ho could not vote. This set
tled it , and the result of the ballot was de
clared , the chairman remarking that so far
as he was concerned ho had never been
ashamed or afraid to vote his honest convic
tions. .
Taking up the proposition to protect the
south shores of Florence lake from the en
croachment of the Missouri river , the com
mittee on roads reported in favor of expend
ing the sum of $1,000 in widening the road to
twenty foot for a distance of about ono mile.
There was a report recommending this
action , and after it was adopted Mr. Pad
dock cut loose and nailed it nown by moving
to reconsider the vote by which the report
was adopted and then moving to table the
vote to reconsider. After some parliament
ary sparring the motion prevailed nnd the
$1,000 was ordered taken from the road fund ,
