Wheat Reacted Nearly Two Oonts to the
Surprise of the Trade.
SOME OF THE FACTORS IN THE DEAL

Rood prospects for spring whcatcrratcil n bull
ish sentiment which refused to bo downed by
reported troubles of western banks.
The Information concerning the Jeopardy
of tlio tprlng nlicatcrop was the cruelcstcut
of all. The panacea for short reports In
Ktiropo and 100,000,000 bu. shortiiKO In the
wlnlcrcrop here , wcro supposed by the bears
tobo In process of growth In the great north
west nnd wlththnt resource becoming small
by ilCRrceR , they wcro reaching out today with
both hands for their short wheat. Cash wheat
sold on Juno 7 at 2Mc under July nnd today
tlio difference was narrowed from ? ctolc.
This was pointed out as proof of the improve-
mentln the local nnanctal situation. At the
close July wns lurk to from fiO c toG4&c , or
from fir. to 'ic Rain since yesterday.
The opcnliiK In wheat was weak nt He de
cline on easier cables nnd rumors of some ad
ditional hank failures eNowhcrc. Thi'lii was
peed buying with lltttu on sale and prices
qulrkly tinned. There was ovldent hesitation
on tlio part of sellers. ,
A pilvato cable giving what purported tobo
the substance of n French wheat crop report
from tlio London Times showed tlio condition
of the French u Inter w heat crop to raiiRc- from
40 to 71 nor cent and spring from ' 25 to 72 per
cent. The area of winter wheat was given
nhoilt the hntno us last year , lull the aren of
bprliiK was 20 per cent less. For a tlmo this
leporthadadecldedly stro .RtliPiiliic Influence
nnd prlcus mndo iiulto a bulge , hut It was
noticed It had llttlo or no otU'flt In foreign
markets and on Inquiry Its genuineness was
doubted.V later im estimation led to the l > c-
llef that It was old news lohashed from the
London Times of .Iiinti 3 , and since discredited.
Hero the nun lost lost some of the bulge. Tlio
largest decreasn In tlio vlslhlo supply helped
lo llrm Iho market some. The market at the
opening was from > < ito'Jo lower than the
dosing llgurus yestpi day. then advanced from
IJfcto lr , eased oir ullghtly and the close
Was about * 6c higher than yesterday.
There was instllng and hustling among the
corn shorts today. The scramble did not
start for about fifteen minutes after th oticn-
IIIR , but when It did lieKln there was a long
contlmiancu of It. Opening trades were nt
from ! { c to > { a decline , but a better demand
was MKIII developed nnd the prlco was ad
vanced > { c. the statement of 1)0,000 ) bu. do-
creabo In the vlslhlo stipplv and continued
talk of smaller moNCments having
Bomo Influence. Then the car lots
for tomorrow came In at 270 , which
resulted In a still further Rain of
\ic. 1'rlces later receded c from rcnll/lngs ,
ruled steady and at the close weio from Ic to
U5c higher than yesterday. A Rood cash do-
inand was icported anil this al o added
stronRth to the speculative market. On the
other hand the lowu bulletin was favorable ,
reporthiR the crop well cultivated nnd clean
and tlm weather map showed general heat and
forclnR conditions all over the mlddlo and
western htatcs. Today's airivals exceeded
tlm estimates some , but the out Inspection was
very free.
There was a fair trade In oats and a strong
feeling , dtiu to sympathy with wheat ami corn ,
to moderate olTorliiRs and to fair purchases of
the near futures , and pi Ices advanced from
yc to 7.c and September , and closed steady
at about thetop. The visible supply state
ment was bullish.
The provision market was firm , but still
lacked animation In the speculative trading.
The receipts of IIORS numbered only 12,000
hond ami the shipments of meats In the past
twenty-four hours amounted to thn huavy
total of over 2,600,000 Ins. These facts and
the advance In wheat and corn caused the
firmer tone , which Is reflected In an advance of
Gc in lard and l&e In ribs. 1'orlc was neglected
nnd unchanged.
Estimated recolpts for tomorrow : Wheat ,
02 cars ; corn , 275 cats ; oats , 120 curs ; hogs ,
aO.OOO head. *

Special to 'I'm : llKK.1 The settlement on
the Stock Exchange so far has penn oil very
easily. There was ono failure W. L. Webb & ,
Co. a small , old fashioned llrm of no Import
ance. The continuation of rates , as expected ,
weree\trcmely light , 'only about 4 percent
per annum being irenurally paid. American
railways were apparently sound and there was
a disposition to look fur higher prices , al
though business will probably bo quiet
for some weeks ahead , Conditions are now
the ro\L'rso of a month ago. Then leading
brokers saw cart loads of stock but no money ,
now there are no stocks and heaps of money.
Dig houses , Itothschlld , etc. , think well of the
future. Yankee railways , and South African
shares especially , are likely to advance. The
former closed dull today after being llrm upon
New Yoilc prices , but no mote long stocks are
to bo sliakun out and the SUu'k u\chaneo Is

the satisfactory Argentine settlement. There
was no other fcatuie , but everything gener
ally was llrm. The Urand Trunk weekly tratllc

DANVILLE , Ky. , Juno in. James , Jeff ,
Nathan and Ilardwick Bold en , four des
perate characters , created a panic at
Shelby City , four miles south of here ,
yesterday afternoon and narrowly
escaped with their lives. They drove
through town in two buggies
and on their' first trip went
at a terrific rate , shouting
and shooting their pistols into the
liousea of the citizens. They went from
there to Junction City. Returning to
Shelby City , they resumed their bad be
havior and the marshal attempted to
halt them , but they ran over him. Ho
jumped up and shot at the buggies live
times. They continued through the
town , keeping up their shooting , and a
number of citizens along the street re
turned the fire. On their first trip they
fired into the yard of W. E. Grubbs ,
and ho awaited their return with
a shotgun loaded with buckshot.
When the first buggy reached his house
on the return trip ho raited his gun and
ordered a halt , but inbtead of halting
ono of the men shot at Mr. Grubbs at
short range , missing him , but coining
very near killing his llttlo son. Grubbs
then discharged both barrels of his gun
at the toughs. The men escaped , but it
is thought that ono or two of them were
injured. They are painters and have
recently worked in Louisville , where
their father now resides.

thorn in which ho traded three houses

land consisting of 2,400 acres in West
Virginia. A short time after the exchange -
change Mr. Wheeler went to West Vir
ginia to look after his property , but was
utiablo to locate it. IIo returned to
Chicago and immediately swore out
warrants for the arrest of the two men.

DBNVCH , Juno U ! . After the continuance
of Dr. Graves' trial until the September
term of court and the continuance of tlio
ball of jao.OOO by Judge Burns yesterday
afternoon , judge Macxm stated thai ho
should not rest satisfied with the decision
nnd so a formal application for Dr. Graves
discharge from custody was made before
Judge Hums by Judge Macon ,
The reason alleged for the discharge li
that both the January and April terms of the
district court hero have passed without lr
Graves being tried , which Is contrary to
law. The court designates no clay upon
which the motion for discharge might bo
heard. It is stated that if Jukgu Huruu refuses
fuses the application then an effort will bo
inadu to have the doctor released on a wri
of habeas corpus , and BO Imvo tlio cuso carried
riod to the supreme court on that point.
