There WM a Sharp Break in Wheat
Yesterday ,
CLOSED ONE CENT BELOW SATURDAY
Decline Duo to the 1'not that Hulls Had
toajled Up with Wheat. In . ICxprt-
tntlon Unit the Crop Iteport
Would llulRo the Market.
CniCAOo , June 12. Tli'oro was a sharp break
In wheat today. The market closed exactly
lo lower than Saturday evening. The chief
reason for the break wns the fact that the bulls
Imd loaded up with wheat In the expectation
that the crop report would bulge the market.
As It failed lo do so they nearly all attempted
to sell out at once. Saturday , after hours ,
there was a Jump of Jc In July , and It wns
estimated that the opening price this morn
ing would go up He and abull market thus
assured.
There was much surprise , therefore , when
the public cable quoted Liverpool steady to
Id lower. This was a knock elown the trade
did not expect from the outside. It had a
weakening effect upon the start. Although
prices opened from ? c to iic advance , thov
soon began t weaken. The absence of any
particular expott demand , the clothing house
failure-hero lute Saturday and tbo fact of a
real estate house being In trouble , were nlado
much of ,
A.t 12 o'clock the visible supply retiort was
nil complete ox-cent , Chicago figures. The de
crease without Chicago was 1,700,000 bit. , und
leicul stocks were expected to drcrenfco 700,000
bu. at least. Just when the figures were due ,
Secretary Hlono announced that the Inspection
bureau could not simply Chicago today and
hereafter would not publish figure's until
Tuesday. This again unset calculations and
disturbed confidence- . The explanation given
was that Monday's figures have always been
approximated , the exact Infiirnmtloii not
being obtainable before Tuesday. Last week
there was a discrepancy of BiiO.OOO hit. bo-
IWCMIII receipts and the estimate , and the olll-
clals decline to run Iho chances of making nn-
other blunder.
The maruet became more demoralized dur
ing the last. hour. Financial troubles were
again forcing stocks lower In Chicago and
Now York and closing cables were not Im
proved.
From top figures at the opening prices de
clined with only slight fluctuations froml\to
17i'c' , and the closing was about Ic lower for
July and 1 ! < R lower for September than tbo
closing figure's of Saturday. While Iho crop Is
estimated to lies much smaller than lust year ,
the largo surplus In sight , It was thought ,
would make up for a largo shortage in thu
ylelel , andtlto olfect of the former was oflVot
by the latter.
Corn was comparatively stcaily , a fact duo ,
It Is said , to talk of a falling olV in the move
ment' , the fairly good cash demand and higher
cables. Opening transactions wore a fraction
under the final figures of Saturday , und after
belling up } ; c , worked back from ! ic to Me ,
ruled easier , und at the clobo bud letet Irom c
p to ? > c.
Fluctuations In oats quotations were eon-
flned to a moderate range. The close was with
a not loss of Me. Government rejMirt showeel
a smaller increase In the area than expected ,
but cut llttlo figure.
The provision trade was stagnant , the pit
being deserted most of the time. The elecllno
recorded was attributed to the break In wheat.
Compared with Saturday night pork is Jl
lower , ribs OOc und larel unchanged.
Estimated receipts for tomorrow : Wheat ,
154 cars ; corn , 040 curs ; oats , 380 cars ; hogs ,
14,000 head.

last week's onward shipments of currency.
This movement continued todayi and despite
a slight recovery In Chicago exchange , was
heavier than ut fast week's close. So long as

shipped from INOW York. Uolaxntlon of the

lions Dealers expected a light run today ,
and were accordingly not , surprise ! to receive
less than 1,000 head. Aside from the number
of hogs on sale , conditions were much the
same as on Saturday. There was a'good elemand
from shippers and speculators , all local hoeiscs
were after a few loaels , and as there was a
llrmor tone to reports from Chicago trade was
brisk from the start and prices ruled a shade
to 5c higher than Sateirdny's average mar
ket. The range was narrow. Cliolco
lights and butchers' sold as high
as SG.50 , and rough heavy hogs
as low as &G.35. Fair t < i good hogs of all
weights i-old largely at S&45 , and by 10 o'clock
the pens were cleared the market closing
up strong at the advance. It was practically
a $0.45 market against a JG.40 trade Saturday

The stage was blown to pieces and the

that ho will probably die. Fortunately
there were no passengers. Two other

that all three had caps on it is thought
they were placed in the road maliciously.

UIIAHIIOX , Nob. , Juno 11. ( Spoclnl corros-
pontloncix ] DAWOM county , ltnfito In tlio
northwestern part ot the slivto , though not
the Inmost , | s ono of the bc.il counties in the
Ri-cat commonwealth. It is iti'ixao miles and
thus contains SV'3,500 ' acres , of which at least
thrco-fourths cixn bo cultivated , and the rest
Is taken up with wateir-coiirsc-n anil bluffs ,
which make the llncst of pasture and pntr-
Ing ground. It has a larRO bolt of us line
wheat laud as can bo founel anywhere , anel
oats are almost a sura and larito crop
frequently wolghltiR out as high as forty
pounds or bettor to the bushel , : ts Miuasurcet.
Corn is grown to a limited extent where the
ground Is suHlclontly old , the farmers of this
county haviiiK early learned that it rcejxilroa
old ground to produce a largo crop of corn.
A few farmers are pro win n alfalfa and nro
tucetltiB with wonderful success. Cattle ,
sheep und horses are the principle lines ot
stock raised hero. The County AKficultur.il
society owns citthty acres of land n short
distance from Clmdron and has grounds
nicely lltted up with fences , Inilldltiirs , sheds
and a lirst-cluss half mlle race track , wliero
every full the people of the county gather to
exhibit the products of which they are Justly
proud , ami to witness the sport of a few
races as produced by some choice steppers
owned in this part of Ncbr.iska and south
west South Dakota. Several peed farms
have been sold lit this county during the last
few months as high as f''O per acre , though
peed unimproved lands can bo purehaseel as
low us $8 per aero. There are ? still a few
pieces of government land in tills county
which can bo taken under the homestead
act. The Fremont , Klkhorn & Missouri
Vnlloy railroad runs nearly ellagonally
through the county , thus giving n majority
of her farmers easy outlet for shipping. Thu
most of her grain In disposed of in the Black
Hills country. This section woulel ho n valu
able nctiuUItioii to the jobbing trade of
Omaha if she would but reach out after It.
A wide awake city is Clmdron , the county
seat of Dawes county , with u population of
over 11,500 , located on the line of the Klkhorn
railroad , and regareleel as thu best tovii In
northwestern Nebraska. Chadron Is fast be
coming a jobbing point , receiving nssho docs
almost the entire traeto of , a largo territory
In a retail way , also the trade of the mer
chants in several of the smiller towns , besides -
sides a nice slice of the Ulaclc Hills trade ,
thus giving her supremacy over any other
town between Norfolk anel Doaelwood on the
Fremont , Klkhorn it Missouri Vnlley rail
road. It is a freight and passenger division
of the railroad , placing about " 00 employes
on the pay roll of the company at this point ,
which gives her merchants a sure trade all
the time. There also is located ono of the
United States land ofllccs , which probably
docs more business than any other
land oflleo In the state , nnd is ably
presided over by Ho.i.V. . II. MeCann and
Mayor Powers as register and receiver.
Her business interests support three good
banks , three weekly newspapers , anel for
amusement her people nro liberal patrons of
a largo and well arranged opera hall.
Arrangements are now being mnele to re
build tlio college which was burncel down a
few months since. The court house ' .s largo
and well built , and far superior to that of
many of the more wealthy counties of the
slato.
The recent visit of the National Medical
association to this city was n source of much
amusement to iimuy of its citizens , the elec
tors secmlmr to think that the inhabitants
were mostly cowboys , horse thieves
and "dead bael men" generally , many of
the medical gentlemen securing Icoelac snaps
of a prominent bank cashier for Doc Middle-
tonand likewise securing the iiiu'go of a ejuiot ,
peaceable citizen for an imaginary "Kattle-
snake I'eto" of Powelcr river fame. Then a
few squaw nnel buck Indians were run in
among the excursionists as the originators
and all that survived the bloody massacre of
'Woundcel Knee. Eacti individual of the
train , and especially the ladics..scemcd ex
ceedingly anxious to shako the hand of Doc
Mldeiloton , who was playing the reckless
cowboy part , who probably never stole a
white man's horse or permitted any leaden
hail to escape from his gun into the ilcsh or
bone of a solitary white individual , yet ho
was regarded as n man who had
slain his dozci.s of men promiscuously
and stolen vast herds of valuable animals.
The effete professional gentlemen of the east
ought to regard every man in the west who
wears a white broad brimmed hut and rides
n broncho as a bold bad man and kodtic him
with the idea that they were securing the
profile of an individual who would bo known
in western history as "a deael bael man. "
This city of late has received considerable
free advertising over the pony race to tlio
World's fair , anel sorao ot the gooely goody
people who would work a house servant or a
Held hand sixteen hours per day pretend to
bo fearful that great cruelty will bo neces
sary to muko this race suflicicntly successful
that nny of lY.i competitors may get
into Chicago some time during the World's
fair. The facts are that any rielcr injuring
or abusing bis animals is barred from the
race or any part in the reward ; that no man
who is seeking to win 81,000 , nnel has to ride
1,000 miles within thirty days and has only
two horses to do it with , and they his own ,
will take any chance on hurting his animals
or allowing them to suffer for want of care
ful attention.
This race is advertised to begin on the liHh
of Juno nt 5 o'clock p. in. , starting from the
IJlaino hotel. It is thought there will bo
about twenty starters ; the llrst two register
ing stations will bo O'Neill und Sioux City
and from there the nearest route to Chicago.
