When the officers entered the house they found James Lynch and W. Mor ris there , and they were also taken into custody. Johnson says both the mother and daughter are bad. Mrs. Williams was Interviewed by n BEB reporter and denied that her daughter had over entertained the company of vicious men. That she was pure and virtuous und worked every day for an Omaha firm. She says that Johnson came to her house with ono of the boarders and another man whom she had never met. The stranger seemed to have plenty of money , nud Johnson said ho was going to "roll" him. She told him not to do so , at least while lu her houso. Johnson says the "giowlor" was rushed sovernl times nnd everybody got pretty well filled up. Ire I. one. The Thirteen club was organized on January 13 , 1882 , with thirteen orlplnal members , says the Now York Sun. They have dined together regularly over since at thirteen minutes after 8 on the 13th day of the month with thirteen at n table. Of the original members only four have died , two of them within the past year. This Is a record for longevity which the members of few dining clubs can show. The total membership at the close of the year was 1,144 , , and the total number of deaths twelve. Of those twclvo six , or just half , had never at tended a dinner , and so had not violated the thirteen superstition. Tills , too , makes It seem that the members of the club who nttonded the dinners and sat thirteen at a table on the 13th day of the month have bettor prospects for long llfo than the members who stay away from the dinners. In order to strengthen Its defiance of the thirteen superstition the Thirteen club has increased its number of ollleors until It now has thirteen. It would also try to dlno on the 13th of the month and on Friday , but the 13th nnd a Friday do not always coincide. It has done the best it could , though , by fixing the initiation fee at $1.13 and the dues at 13 cents a month. GeorgO Francis Train , ono of the most nctlvo members of the Thirteen club , and Its unolllclal poet , Is also opposed to the Friday superstition. The Thirteen club are with him hero , for their his torian lias compiled a record of the events that have happened on Fridays , including a great deal of old Anglo- Saxon lore. The first of the facts about Friday in American history is that Co- 1 lumbus sailed from Pales on a Friday ; ho discovered America on a Friday , and ho arrived buck in Spain on another Fri day. George Francis Train has boiled down a number of these Friday happen ings in this paragraph : "Washington born , Queen Victoria married , Napoleon Bonaparte born , battle - tlo Bunker Hill fought , America dis covered , Mayflower landed , Joan of Arc buvncd at stake , battle Waterloo fought , Bastilo destroyed , Declaration of Inde pendence signed , battle Mnrcngo fought , Julius Ciusar assassinated , Moscow burned , Shakespeare born , King Charles I. beheaded , battle Now Orleans fought , Lincoln assassinated. " Mr. Theodore W. Davis , the historian of the club , writes that in Constantinople ple and in Spain Tuesday was considered an unlucky day. A Spanish rhyme trans lated reads : On Tuesday neither wed , nor go aboard ship , nor leave thy wife , There is an old English superstition that Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden on Friday ; hence the day has been unlucky ever since. In Franco it was thought unlucky to cut your nails on Friday , but in Hol land there was a superstition that out- ting the nulls on Friday would euro a toothache. In England hardly 2 pot- cent of the marriages are celebrated on n Friday. The Chicago records show tlmt 4 } per cent of the Chicago cage weddings are on Friday. In Scot land there is the contrary superstition about weddings that Friday is the best day to bo married on. In Glasgow niuo- tenths of the marriages are celebrated on Friday and none on Sunday , while very few take place on Saturday and Monday. It shows how confident the members of the Thirteen club are of long life , that at the ono hundredth dinner of the Thirteen club last January two centen nial Thirtoons , one headed by Hon. John H. V. Arnold and the father by Dr. Gcorgo XV. Boskowitz , sealed and stored thirteen bottles of wine , which are to bo opened und drank at the two hun dredth dinner of the Thirteen club , which it is figured out will take place in about thirteen years. MISSOURI'S RICH BOTTOM. Millions of Dullaru und .Mucli Whisky Lust i Jii Ittvor Wrecks. There are millions of dollars in the bottom of the Missouri , or somewhere near it , but the trouble is to Und it. Some of it may bo found some time , but that some time is very apt to bo when present generations have passed away and the wrecks and contents of the steamboats exist only in tradition. Ex ploring companies have been formed in the past , a number of them , but they have all boon without reward , none of them over having found oven n trace of the prizes sought , says the Globe-Demo crat. Other companies are now talked of , and a number of St. Louisans stand ready to gamble a stake with any ono who takes the lead in organizing. The whisky buried in the sand and bars , if it is ever rccavorodj will pro- auco a period of the rarest intoxication to the tablcspoonful. There could bo no bettor process of curing It than by bury ing it in the damp sand of the river bed or bars. Then , too , the whisky of these days was real whisky , and had ago and body nt the time it was lost , and if it was on bale now it would have a market all its own , and it wouldn't bo at UOconta or 25 cents a drink , oithor. The chances would be , rather , that it would go into private collars to bo handed out only on rare occasion The oldest wreck of which there is now any knowledge , and it is ns nearly traditional us anything could bo , is of a Spanish boat that was sunk ut the month of the river Dos Porca in South St. Louis. The year in which it wont down , the chat-actor of the boat , the natura ol the cargo , all is tradition. But it is said among the oldest of the old rivet1 men that a boat did go down there "in the early years" and that it was laden with rich Spanish goods and arms und gold of immense value. The oxiict spol at which she sunk is not known. "In the early years , " also , it is said thai ollorts wore made to locate the wreck , but without success. It is also said , by the way , that the Spanish vessel hud on board a goodly stock of liquors. Tko oldest wreck of which there is any record or knowledge , with people now living , is that of a government stcuinboat which bunk away back in the early IIO'u at Arrow Rock Island , ncai Boonovillo , It wa on ltd way up the river to pay oil the soldiers , and had on board u largo amount of gold nnd t con&idorublo quantity of whisky. She was a flno side- wheel boat and her loss was a consider able one. Efforts wore made to save her cargo , but it was practically a complete loss. There have been n number of searching parties who wore llllcd with the Idea.of locating and digging up the treasure , but , so far as known , tncyhavo never had any trace of It. As in the case of the government boat , there is a story that some of the plunder was recovered , but In this case It was of the whisky instead of the gold. The pluco where the Arabia wont down Is now solid ground , grown over with tim ber and grass , some of the timber being two and three feet through. That is , this is the condition o ( the place pointed out as the Arabia's grave , though there is no such thing as n chart to show it conclusively. World' * Vulr Hotel Acronnnoilntlonn. Is always spoiling for a light , still there .is one kind of fighting to which oven the bravo sons of Erin are sometimes averse that is dueling. A story well illus trating this fact has recently como to 113. A certain Irishman , having been challenged to fight a duel , accepted the conditions after much persuasion on the part of his friends * who felt confident of iiis success. His antagonist , a lame man , walked on crutches. When the place for the shooting had been reached , the lame man's seconds asked that ho bo allowed to lean against a milestone which happened to be thoro. The privilege was allowed and the lame " mm "took his stand. The Irishman and his seconds drew off to the distance agreed upon 100 feet. Hero Put's courage suddenly failed him and ho shouted to the lame man : "I've a small favor to ask of yo , ser ! " "What is it ? " asked the cripple. Pat answered , "I tould yo thot yo might lean agin the mile post and now I would like the privilege of leaning agin the nixt one.
