Kreat excitement nnd deprcsilon nt the Slock
exchange. The sales reached the large total of
680,501 shares , liquidation ? having been on n
more uxlcnslvo scale than for n long time.
There was nothing In the way of news to affect
prices ndveisely. Sterling exchange wns easier ,
nnd gold exports by Saturday's steamers nro
still In doubt. Money wns also In better sup

Interest declined under Increased offerings by
the banks nud other lenders.
The heavy selling of stocks U attributed al
most entirely to the exhaustion of margins and
the uncertainty created by the rumors In cir
culation affecting the ciedlt of corporations
nnd Individuals. The only failure reported
was that of A. II. Wheeler , and this was of llt-
tlo consequence , but the boars , taking advan
tage of the demoralization , started stories
about the alleged embarrassment of the lead
ing operators and banks. Thu most dllllgeut
search after the close of the exchange failed to
corroborate these stories of Impending trouble.
There is no doubt , however , that imany

by the World Publishing company as a col
lector up to Muivh last , and re
cently a complaint was llluit i-harg-
imr him with the cmhe//.lement of i'Js.
The prisoner was arrested by Detectives
Kitchie and Xohren at the rciiiest | of the
local authorities at tlio Times oftlco in
Chicago , where ho had found employment.
Armed with requisition papers Sergeant
Ormsby left for that city on April „ ' . . to con
vey the cmbe/.iler b icli to Omaha. On his
arrival in Chicago the olllcer mot with some
obstacles in tlio discharge of his duty ; the
sheriff of Cook county having been served
with a notice that application for a writ of
habeas corpus would bo made. An ith.'r iHf-
liculty was that the prisoner had be 'n
charged in police court by Inspector Hess
with being a fugitive from justice , the hearing -
ing on which charge had been S'Jt for j ester-
day. Tlio police authorities therefore did
not feel inclined to turn their man over until
after that date.
When Trumbull first s-iw the Omaha
oflicer , after his arrest in Chicasro , ho re
marked thai the thing ho cared for most
was the knowledge his daughter would
gain that he was a subject for the peniten
tiary. Tills daughter is now at St. James
Orphanage at Benson , Neb.
The return trip on the II .t M. tr.Un was
without incident until Creston. la. , was
reached early yesterday morning. I'nheardby
Ormsby the prisoner managed to request the
colored porter to get him some morphine
pills , slipping f 1 into the hitter's haiul as
pay.
According to this individual the pills were
obtained by him on a prescription from the
company physician , u ho was on the train ,
and at 1'acillc Junction. The oillcer Im.l l--ft
Trumbull for a few minutes after the train
left there and when ho returned the latter
was holdiiii ; a pill box containing one-eight li
grain pills in his hands.
When asked to turn this over , Trumbull
replied : [ have done it ; you don't need to
stop me. " Me slid further that ho had
swallowed ten or twelve of the pills , and
that he thought this sullicient. This was
about V o'clock in the morning.
As soon as the train arrived in Omaha ,
Ormsby hastened his charge to the
station , where Police Surgeon lib-
bern took him in baud at once. Dr.
Hacon was also called In immediately , and
both antidotes and medicines were adminis-
tcied to relieve tlio patient of tlio apparent
overdose of poison which ho had taken. At
llhliOhe was reported very nearly out of
danger.
Trumbull is said to have a married
daughter who resides in tills city where he
is well known.
