The trials and tribulations of the TlaptUts of Council Hluffs are things of public knowl edge. Steps are now being taken by the First church looking toward a combination of interests which will put a stop to all the embarrassing notoriety which has attended the organization In the past. At a recent meeting a circular letter was drawn up and ordered sent to each member of the Temple Hapttst church , which with drew from the main body about a year ago In such a sensational man' nor , amid calls for the police and turning out of gas. The letter In olTccl conveyed to the members of the Temple church the desire of the others to forget old animosities , to let bv-gons bo by-gones , and to unite the two organl/atlons as they were before the great split took place. This was considered a reasonable proposition , In view of the hard feeling that had existed between the iwo organisations , and a copy was sent to each member of the Temple church with the expectation that the latter would meet them half way. A meeting of the Temple Itaptlst church was held a few da.ss 111:0 at which a reply to the proposition was drafted and sent to ' tin * niilcers'of the Kiist church. Keitherj qucHtlon can be satis factorily answered. It is not in "Thompson's Humbler Poets , ' nor any of the standard col lections so far as known. Unless the author comes to the front and owns up to the piece It will probably go on through the ages a literary waif as long as anybody retains a scrap book or a memory. The poem bobs up periodically , and as sarc as it does there Is a Hood of inquiry as to who wrote It. "You Kissed Me , " Is usually accompanied by the following foot note : "The above was written in 1M17 by a lady under 'JO years of age. James Hcdpath. the historian , thought so much of the poem that ho had an edition printed on white satin. John O. Y. , iiy Miss Frona Coreywho was then under " ( . vearsof age. Misi Corey , previous to that time , hud contributed a number of excellent article's , both prose and verso , to the press , some of which appeared in the New Yorli Express. Ono day n gentleman who bad been a visitor at the homo of Miss Corey's parents took his departure and on bidding her good by inpriiiteel a kiss upon her lips. " While attending to some house hold duties the lady's mind ran upon the letter tor and the answer she would write when suddenly the words , "you kissed1 me , " wen 'iiiconsciously uttered. Without leaving hoi work she composed the succeeding lines o the poem , transferred them to paper and thn poem in the rough was completed. A sirt of mythology has grown it ] about the American Indian in region whence ho vanished 100 years ago. Tin popular names of many plants inchul the adjective Indian. Few persons it America say Indian corn now , but In dian cakes is a term still strongly in trenched south of Mason and Dixon' line , and there is oven a plant known t children as Indian tobacco. The bril limit cumin , is called Indian shot bccaus its seeds are black , bullotliko pellet * Indian traditions are preserved with i sort of reverence in the south. Twenty live years ago local travelers on a certai : road in Worcester county , Maryland commonly stopped at a point in th remote country , reached under a bush a the roadside , drew forth a stone morta and pestle used by the Indians 100 year before , showed the relics to an , stranger in the company and carofull put them back. Th French and the Knglish seu adventure ! once made a common cause again * Spanish settlements in the now work and all three of these words eamo i time to describe the rude son soldier who despoiled the Spanish main and th towns upon the coasts of the Spanis possessions. Filibuster is said to bo th result of an attempt to make a Frenc word of freebooter , and the English hoi rowed it back from the French beoaufc it sounded le.-s frankly brutal than th Knglish word. Buccaneer was orlg iially French in form , and it meant 11 first ono who hunted the boucan or wll cattle and hogs of the West Indies ; the ono who made jerked moat of the ! 'Josh , and , finally , bccuu&o this meat we used to provision the ships of the so rovers , a filibuster or freebooter.
