Yesterday a uoupln of now developments came to light in connection with the case of Captain W. A. Hayes , who attempted to commit suicide by the gas and pistol methods last Sunday. After ic-ivlnv the Ogden house it is said that ho went to the Paxton hotel in Omaha and took a room on the top floor , leaving imperative orders at the olllce that he was not to bo disturbed under any cir cumstances as ho was very nervous and wanted to sleep until morning. He went up stairs but only stayed a short time , when he came down and left the hotel very much disgusted. The fact that the Paxton Is lighted by electricity instead of gas may furnish a clew to the cause of his disgust. lie also paid a visit to Davis' dm. ; store on Upper llroadway and purchased fit \\orth of morphia , telling the clerk he wanted it for a neighbor lady who was ill and coujd not come to the store for it. When he reached home his wife wanted to see what he had in the package , and wren she iinall\ , got hold of it the name of the deadly drug in large letteis. embellished with an artistic repre sentation of a skull itm1 cross bones , stared her In the face. She seized it out of his hand and before he could prevent her stuck it in the stove , where a lire was burning. The statement that Hayes' rash acts were caused by a spree Is denied by his friends , who state that he had not been drinking heavily for .some time. They attiibulc them to financial diniculties. The executive committee of the Commer cial club Is by no means an Idle body. It meets often , works hard and accomplishes much. At the meeting last evening one of the leading subjects of consideration was an en larged proposition , so to speak , from the Hoard of Trade. Its llrst proposition con cerning thu rental and remodeling of the fifth floor for the purposes of the club was duly accepted. It has since been thought that more room wouldbo necessary and this the Hoard of Trade now undertake to supply by building up the unllnlshed portion tion of the iltth story : This plan will give further space of1070 feet and the rental will thus ho Increased to Jl.'O per month. This will enable the seating at one banquet ofUK ) persons. Some of the members were not pleased with the Idea that the elevator service was not to be Improved , out upon the statement by K. 10. Uruce of the eniclency of the present elevator they were satisfied. The motion to accept the proposition was unanimously adonted , with the understand ing that , as before , the committees of the respective bodies arrange all details. Will ( 'ott l.'ollHldernlile. F. C. Aycr stated that the change hi the plans would necessitate a total expenditure by the Hoard of Trade of { i.OOO to $10,01X1 , and Mr. Fisher , of the Una of Fisher & I uvrie , architects in charge , explained the general plan of the rooms and their dimen sions. The committee , consisting of W. A. \j. \ Gibbon , John S. Hrady and 10. 10. Hruco , charged with the duty of selecting a freight commissioner reported progress. They were at work upon the matter , but preferred , rather than to make a mistake , to take further time. They were granted an exten sion. sion. The The matter of the State Business Men's con vention was then brought un. It was thought proper and so ordered that a committee of three bo appointed to confer with the rail roads and F. S. Ilodgin , secretary of tlio State Dusiiiess Men's association , relative to transportation for the delegates. John S. Knox , John S. Hrady and 10. 10. Hruco were designated as such committee. A. P. Tuckoy , thu chairman pro tern of the board , then stated that a delegation from Council Hlufl's , which had a matter of im portance to lay before the club , was present. H was thu subject of a 5-cent fare on the electric railwaj across the river and ho would call upon .HCS McCabe for a state ment of what was desired. Coimel ! lllullH Henri ) I'rom. Mr. McCabe said that the interests of the two cities were identical and they could not j do business together without the removal of the barrier which existed in the shape of a high rate of transportation , both for passen gers on the electric railway and for vehicles. He believed that charge.s could be reduced if the people and the city councils would co operate , and asked that , a committee be ap pointed by the club to Investigate and confer with their committee upon the mater. Secretary Smith , thu chairman of the vis iting delegation , hoped to interest Omaha in this question and to create such a public sen timent here as existed 111 Council Hlufl's in f.uorof the reduction. It was with them practically unanimous , They had no griev ances against the motor company , ami if they did not believedt would be fully compen sated in making the change they would not bo before the club asking its co-operation. He hoped the club would appoint such a committee as they desired. T. J. Evans thought the faro on the bridge railway was all out of proportion to that charged for vehicles. The cost of running a two-car train was about $1 per hour and the average number of those who passed ono way was thirty passengers to e.lch train. The toll collected now for animals , vehicles and pedestrians paid the interest and taxes upon the bridge and the increase of travel over it would yield big returns and render ample compensation to the electrle railway company. Interest * Are llutu.il. C. M. Hurl said Omaha was rapidly reacli- tng out and might take much of the trade in western Iowa which now goes to Chicago and St. Louis. Omaha and Council Hlufl's had mutual interests and should work to gether to break down a barrier which pre vented a full measure of commercial inter course. The people of Council HlulTs had fullv considered both the rights of the street railway company and the public and hoped the club would take the matter up with them and make a thorough investigation of the propriety and feasibility of the desired reduction. [ . .uclen Wells , a prominent coal dealer , said the people of the two cities were interested in ono another. Ills sales were larger in Omaha than in Council Hlutfs , and ho believed the hairier snould bo taken down and free intercourse established. If a committee was appointed some plan which would redound to the hcuellt of both sides could be agreed upon and carried out. Dan Farrell asked if Council HlutTs would take up some of Omaha's grievances if Omaha would help It ; for example , the delays which the Omaha merchants suf fered across the river in regard-- transportation of cars loaded with their goods. In reply , Spencer Smith said the present delegation's authority extended only to this ono matter , but that his people would probably ho glad to render nny assist ance they could. Committee ti > Represent Oinnlin. F. C. Ayer said that at the opening of the bridge to the puulio a ring , signifying the wedding of the two cities , was weded to gether. In order to make the union closer ho moved that a committee of live he ap pointed to consider the question with the Council Bluffs committee. The motion was unanimously carried , and the chairman stated that he would name the committco today. The chairman then thanked the dele gation and hoped further conferences would take place between the two cities.
