With the wind blowing a gale , and with
every ono remaining Indoors that was not
absolutely forced to be out , It could hardly bo
expected that there would bo very much ac
tivity In the produce district. In addition to
the hindrance ) from unfavorable weather Is
the fact that the < | iimllty ; of Imttur , eggs and
poultry coming to market Is very IlKht. Tak
ing everything Into consideration tbo market
could not very well bo otherwise than dull.
lluttor Is becoming almost an unknown arti
cle In this market , especially good butter. It
the season hot ween hay and grass , and until
grass comes there Is not much prospect of an
Incroiibo In the receipts or a decrease In the
price. Heports from the country liullcnto that
the grass is commencing to start , and that It
will not bo long before new butter will com
mence' to arrive.
The egg situation Is , to say the least , pe
culiar. The market , In the country has been
advancing and track buyers have been strong
buyeis. In the menimhllo tbo market hero
has remained stationary. Chicago buyers
huvo been picking up a good many eggs In Ne
braska and have had much to do with keeping
tin the market In the country. The market In
Chicago , however , Is not so strong a.s It was a
short time ago.
Poultry Is also very scarce and high but the
lilgh prices do not appear to cause any mate
rial Incieasu In tbo receipts. Everything In
the way of chickens Is picked up quickly on
There were no fresh receipts of strawborrle.s
to speak of. The llrct shipment of berries

was against much trade In dry goods on the

who had been attracted to the largo auction
sale of Indigo lilue.s. The situation , however ,
was unchanged , except that the re.sult of the
auction sale referred to was felt to bo beno-
llcl J to tbo tone of the market. About 1,300
caM's of Algoniiuln Indigo prints were oflurcd
and guaranteed by the auctioneers to bo per
fect In every way , all defective pieces having
been withdrawn.
It was not expected that oven under thcso
circumstances the goods would bring over 5c
any way. The llrst case sold for 5'ic and
shortly after the prlco made advanced to 54o ! ,
then to 5" . c and single-case lots sold at 5'c.
A prominent printer was the principal buyer.
Whatever slunlllcanco was attached to this
fact the result was a benellt to the market , as
It was surprising. Many others as well as job
bers were bidders at the sale.

NEW VOIIK , April 20. The stock speculation
was feverish and unsettled again today by tbo
same causes which have operated against the
market for weeks past. The uncertainty In
regard to the treasury policy , thu strength of
sterling oichange , the talk ot heavy gold on-
gageuienU and the signs of Increased strin
gency In money nil tended to uii'oltlo thn
vlewt of holders of stocks At the name time
the be urn were emboldened to mitko a more
vigorous attack UIHIII xuchstocka as they know
to m unprotected.
Taken altogether the losses were by no
means heavy. Missouri I'aclllc fell olT ' 4 per
cent , National Cordage preferred 3 per cent ,
Lake Shore 2"i PIT cent , Manhattan 2H per
cent , ( lencrnl Electric Pi per cent and West
ern rnlnn in percent. The remainder of the
IM yielded < i H percent. A numberof shares
advanced > ( nl per cent during the morning ,
but later on In sympathy with stocks lust
named rallied. Just previous to the close
there was a recovery of from U to N percent
from the lowest on'rcpurts , which proved to be
well founded , that Secretary Carlisle would
COIIKI out with an olllclnl statement In regard
to his policy this evening. In n majority of
Instances the not declines today were U per
cent. This Is explained by the fact that out
siders were attracted by the low prices and
were buyers on all the reactions. Among the
specialties , Tonnt"sseo Coal ft Iron preferred ,
broke 18 points , Edl nn Illuminating 4 > i per

"A source of financial aid for us this year. "
says the St. Louis Globo-Ucmocrat , "which
has not beep mentioned , but which is worth
considering , is the approaching Columbian
fair. American tourists spend In Europe
every year from $00.000,000 to $100,000,000 ,
without any material offset trom expendi

the fair will keep thousands of Americans at

The 40,000 souvenir quarter-dollars which
congress authorized to bo minted for the
Hoard of Lady Managers of the World's
Fair will be issued , it Is expected , by May 1
These coins nro of peculiar interest for sev
eral reasons. In some respects the Isabella
quarter is a much greater novelty than the
Columbian half-dollar , as the coins bearing
the Spanish queen's portrait are much more
limited in number. Ono of the special
features of the now coin is that H is the llrst

Recently the pollco commissioners re

of the counellmcn that the fees are out

three blocks. Also on grading Hickory street

Tsventy-'I'-st street , ono
block , which required the eh.unnan to labor
for seven days and the oth'-r two for four
days. The appraisers' bills amounted to f-IS ,

three appraisers to put in a week in deter
mining the damages arising by reason of
opening up a street for a distance of 0110
block.
Another Instance was widening Ham-rot * ,
street from Tenth to Eleventh , and the
chairman got In three davs work and the
others two days each at $ ' 100 per day for
looking over one bloeic and agreeing upon
damages. While the eoimcilmen were dis

which was done by repudiating the three
