THE OMAHA DAILY BEE ; TUt'KSIUY. APRIL 20. 1808. SJJOUDD KEEP JURORS BUSY County Attorney Kaloy Rebuked for Too Little Hustling. JUPGE KEYSOR OBJECTS TO DELAYS With Two Hundred I'rUonrri < 1 Trial lie Think * Homo of tliw dues Should He ilciuly for Acllon StateN rrl oncr Arraigned. N Tlicro will bo hut n week's vacation be tween the February ami May terms or the illstrlot court such has been tlio amount of business waiting to bo transacted. The llnal adjournment of the February term lias been fixed for Friday afternoon , ami the May term wl" "I10" ono week from tin1 following Monday. Notwithstanding tlio vast amount of busi ness disposed of by the seven judges since the beginning of last February , there will bens ns largo n docket , for the next term as has over been seen In the county. .Indies anil lawyers attribute this to the fact that in old times , when there wore less Jud s upon the bench than now. it was imiKissihle to net a case to trial within two years after it was commenced , whik' now a case may bo reached at the next term after the Illing of the papers in the oillco of the district clerk. Yesterday the feature of thueourts was the roast that Judge Keysor of the crimi nal division administered to the county nttornev. Upon the convening of the court , the judge asked the attorney what ho had for trial. The reply was that there was nothing to be heard , but there were a lot of prisoners to be at raipncd to plead to the in formation on lllc. Judge Keysor in mild but forcible lan guage informed the attorney that he wanted It understood that when the Jail was full of prisoners the comity could not stand the cx- pcnso of having jurors sitting around with out anything to do. Witnesses should Have been secured and tlio cases prepared for trial. , . . . The county attorney urged that lie had been \er.y busy with the Clara Allen case during the week and had not had much time to look after other matters. Judge Keysor agreed with the legal repre sentative of the county , but intimated that that was not the best of an cxcus ? , as there were three or four assistants , all able gen tlemen , who could hiuo prepared thoiases nnd attended to gilt lug tlio witnesses Into court. Continuing bis remarks , the court said that in his opinion It was not the proper policy to stop Jury trials when there were iiX ( ) prisoners in the county Jail nnd the end ot the term had not been reached. The prisoners that it bad proposed to arraign could not be tried at this term audit was simply delaIng the business to bring them into court. There were a largo number of Jurors oiiiduty.nnd it was a great expense to the county to have them sitting about with nothing to do. In transacting the county business , the judge thought that a man should use the same judgment as though it was a matter of his own and lie should use the s.uno earo about running up n bill of expense " 'I say this , " concluded the Judge , "that in the future there may bo no misunderstanding of the situation and of my position with reference to the dispatch of the business of this division of the court.
