It Is getting to bo the easiest thing in the
world to break out of the Duucln.4 county
Jail. The bolts and the bars uro secure
enough , hut with the present system of
Kuanling about nil thit u man has to do Is
to walk out If he feels an.v disposition to es
cape. Tuesday four of the prisoners es
caped by climbing Into the coal blu and then
going out through the chuto. Yesterday
morning Henry Douglas , ono of the men held
to the district eourt to answer to the charge
of having burglarized Aulttnnn's store ,
walked out into the coal bin , up through the
L'hute and a moment later wns on his way to
Council IHuffs , whither he went to join his
partners who escaped the day hefore.
The loeal detectives iitv somewlrit dis
gruntled over the escape of four of the most
desperate thieves that they have succeeded
In convicting during the winter from the
county Jail Tuesday afternoon. The fugi
tives were all notorious crooks and the de
tectives had secured evidence upon which a
second charge of grand larceny was to be
preferred against them as soon as their
terms expired.
Tough Oiiurtrt.
Kd Fitzgerald , who was probably at the
bottom of the plan to escape , is ono of the
most oantrerous criminals for his ago in this
part of the west. He has been a prolillc.
source of trouble for the police and was
Jlnally convicted on the charge of breaking
into a box car at South Omaha and stealing
n quantity of shoes.
Henry Smith was another man whom the
police regret to see regain Ills liberty. He is
the man who is charged with having as
saulted Kva Loach , a 10-year-old girl , in
North Omaha some time ago. He was dis
charged on that ac ount , us the girl was un
able to positively Identify him. lie had
been at liberty only a day or two when he
broke Into the store of the Collins Gun com
pany and got away with a valuable collec
tion of lire arms. It was on this -barge that
he was committed for trial shortly before lie
pave the jail oillcials the slip.
Hice and Ferguson , the other two who es
caped , were members of the gang of nine
burglars which was unearthed by Detectives
Savage and Dempsey In an old rookery on
Kouth Tenth street and both had pleaded
guilty to petit larceny. Hoth are dangerous
characters and since their trial the olllcers
had discovered evidence which they con
sidered sufllciont to send them over the road
for n couple of years apiece as soon as their
time was out.
< ) u u Hut Trill.
Detectives Ila/eandVaughn spoilt thatoyen'
ing searching for some trace of the fugitives
nnd were partiallv successful. Immediately
after making their escape from the county
jail the four men went to Smith's residence ,
at Twenty-llrst and Nicholas streets , and
stayed for an hour or so. As soon as it became -
came dusk they went Into the lumber yard
near by and clianged their jail clothes for
citizens dollies. While they were perform
ing this operation Deputy HhnritT Lewis was
nt the house Inquiring whether they had
been there. An Irishwoman who lives nc\t
door saw the olllcer arrive and knew that
the men he was after were in the lu.nbor
yard nt the time , but the deputy did not
make any inquiries of her or the four men
jnlght have been back in Jail before this
time.
The detectives ascertained in the evening
that Smith had concealed three of the re-
yolvers which were stolen from the Collins
company somewhere alraut the basement of
the Church of the Holy Family , which is
located in the adjiicent block. They were
seen to go to the church at night and as
the revolvers were gone when the detectives
visited the spot soon afterwards , it is fail-
to presume that the criminals are now well
armed and ready to maite a desperate fight
for their liberty if necessary.
Once rid of their jail clothes and with a
peed revolver apiece in their hip pockets ,
the gang lost no time in making tracks , and
the detectives were unable to get their hands
on them.
Iteturiiln ; ; to Old Tricks.
Procrastination evidently has no place in
the vocabulary of Henry Smith , the burglar ,
who , with several other prisoners , escaped
from the county jail Tuesday afternoon.
Ho lost no time after his escape in returning
to the same tactics which had lost him his
liberty on a previous accasion.
About half past 8o'clock that evening. ! .
II. Daniels left hid horse and buggy standIng -
Ing In front of thn Baptist church at Fif
teenth and Davenport streets while ho went
insido. When he came out n few minutes
afterward the rig was missing. Two hours
afterward a man drove up to Pat Ford's
place and offered to sell it for about half
what it was worth.
Mr. Ford at once surmised that the rig was
stolen and telephoned to the police station.
The thief heard him and took to his heels ,
leaving the horse and buggy behind him.
The latter was turned over to the police and
later returned to its owner. The description
furnished of the thluf tallies exactly with
that of Smith , who is supposed to have taken
the rig for the purpose of raising a llttlo
money with which to get out of town.
CiliUireil | at III * Mother1 * .
Henry Smith , one of the men who escaped
from the county Jail i'uesday afternoon
through the coal hole , was captured by the
BheritT last night. It was expected that
Smith would go to the homo of his mother ,
1144 North Twentieth street , before ho left
town and so the pltico was watched. When
the sheriff searched the place last night
Smith was found concealed in the cellar.
Ilo was taken back to jail and questioned as
to the whereabouts of bis pals , but ho
claimed that ho did not know.

Last evening Mrs. Bnrsik , who lives at
Seventh and Uastellar streets , called at the
city jail and as'.ied the ollicers to go out to
her house and arrest her husband , who
hi-.d been abusmir her. The woman's face
was quite badly cut in two places , and her
head was considerably bruised.
She told a pitiful stor > of her husband's
brutality. It seems that by hard work for a
number of years and by practicing the great
est economy slit ? managed to purchase twelve
lots down in that part of 'tho city , which she
had hoped would bo of considerable value by
the time her son was of ago and thus give
him a fair start in life.
During the last few years her husband ,
who used to own u sand pit and work for a
living , got to drinking hard and spending all
of his time around saloons. His business
went to pieces and ho depended entirely
upon his wife for support.
Within a period of fifteen months Mrs.
Burslk has sold four of her lots and given
the money to her husband , who has squan
dered it. Yesterday he went homo drunk
nnd demanded more money. This the wife
refused and was promptly knocked
down. Then IJursik insisted that bis
wife sign a deed to another lot. Again Mrs.
Durslk declined to comply with the demand
nd was not only Knocked down , but was
brutally kicked on the face , head and shoul
ders , The cuts on the woman's face were
made bv thobool heel of the cruel husband.
Mrs. Hursik was afraid to go homo and
stayed with friends last night. A complaint
nga'lnst the husband will probably bo lllcd
jodny.

is a man that will -walk into some
body's else store this week and pay
ten or a dozen dollars for a suit of
clothes before he visits "The Nebras
ka" and he'll own up to it , too. Today -
day we offer at
as handsome a line of popular priced
suits for men as ever were grouped to
gether. There are not a great lot
in each lot but there are lots of lots.
There are both single and double-
breasted sacks round and square cor
ner sacks black , brown , gray , blue ,
tan , tobacco cheviots , -worsteds , cas-
simeres fancy , plain , mixed checks ,
stripes , plaids some bound [ to sell ]
and some not bound [ but they'll sell
just the same ] . Those suits are in every
sense of the word worth ten , eleven ,
twelve and thirteen dollars. 'Till we
close next Saturday night , unless we
should close out these clothes before ,
we will close out these suits at
< * -
These are not only very
fashionable but also very
pretty and desirable coverings
for floors. If you are a renter
use rugs for economy ; if a
house owner use rugs for con-
vience. Now is a good time to
see the new things ; you need
not buy. We have terries and
mattings for backgrounds.
