Bites of the Froaunt Normal school s.ing a sMo , after whtjh llov. H. W. Tatc offered prayer. Miss Belle St. Clalr of Madison read a p.ipir on "Liter.xturJ in the Public Schools-Whan Shall It Begin } Ho\\ Taught ? " Sh.cs.ud . : "The subject oflcr \ \ - nturc in our schools is the. awakening of an Interest In an 1 the Instllllni inta the mind and very being of the pupils a dealnul love for a pursuit In re.i'ilng ' of th.it which Is pure and ennobling. " "English aii'l American Authors to Bo Used In Public Schools" was the subject very ably handled by Prof. Homer P. Lewis , principal of the Omaha Hi rh school. "The object of literature , " ho explained , "Is largely to give moral culture , thougn It may do much In mental discipline. The teacher by controlling the reading of pupils may brim. them under the most inspiring an I moral Inllunnces. To do this well the teacher sh'juU have the fullest preparation and the moat thorough college or university training. The popular idea that any one who knows something of the history of liter.ituro and has read a little fiction and poetry is amply iiu.ililled to teach litcraturo is most unfortunate. Most applicants for position in high schools think they arc spe cially called to teach history and literature , the most dinictilt studies to manage In a high school course. The course , in iCnglish should extend through the whole course with dally reclt'itions covering liccr.ituro , rhetoric , read ing and composition. Much of the work given for the hlirh school mlnht be done if i' . should seem best before the pupils enter the liiith school. On the whole we arc perhaps apt to tinJcrcstlmate the ability of children to enjoy and un lerstanJ literature. All the better for them if tne work leads them to use to the uttermost their powers , and to feel that the poem or selection of prose has something in it that will repay them if they return to it. Teachers should try to gain the direction of the reading of the scholars done outside of school ; in this way they can render a most Important service by securing the reading of good literature , in the formation of excellent habits of Intelligent reading , and most im portant of all in bringing the nuulls within the range of inspiring moral Inllucnces. " Vf. L. Stephens , superintendent of the schools in Fullcrton , took for his subject , "Cultivation of Sensibilities , " and said. "Tho three conditions under which life ful fills its high purpose are right thousht , right feeling and right action. Of these tlie most important is right feeling , because in the emotions is found the scat of character. Literature is a Held in which to seek culti vation for the sensibilities , for its inception is found in these pnro and intuitive tenden cies of the human raw * , the social Instinct , the desire to parpetuate now truth and pnro sentiment , the tendency to formulate ideas and to strive after attaining them. National literature is the outgrowth of national senti ment , hence it must contain the vitalizing essence of nationality which is termed patriotism. Literature broadens and deep ens the sympathy for nature and humanity. It inculcates in the human heart a dislike for cant , formality and hypocrisy , and cre ates a veneration for purity , humility and sincerity , ill gives to the seeker after knowledge - edge the garnered treasures of all aos , and brings him in touch with all truth , all .good ness , all beauty as revealed in God and nature. " "Mairazines and Newspapers in School" was the subject of the paper by Prof. D. K. Hocse , superintendent of the Oakland schools , which was very ably handled. "Modern Literature" was well handled by Prof. D. U. ICerr , D.D. , of the Bellevue college. The session 'this afternoon was opcsed .by a baritone solo , "Love's Old Sweet Sung , " by J. H. Fisher of Pllgcr. Teaching nar cotics and stimulants as a distinct suojcct was read by W. It. Jackson of Ewln ? set ting forth the disadvantages under which some teachers labor In attempting to intro duce the study of alcohol and narcotics In nonprohibition districts , and the absolute necessity of teaching it under all circum stances was thoroughly discussed by Profs. Mailer , Wise , Finfrock. Kerr. Clommons , Haupt , Hornberger , Scott , Lewis , Stephens , White , Ballow , Fowler , Miller , Berkley , Jackson , Barr , Miller. Grimes and others. "Elective Courses in High Schools" by T U. Grimes of Hnrtigan was next read. In the heated discussion that followed there was a division of opinion as to whether the course in the high school should be elective or not , many holding that prescribed course wan beneficial , and that chil dren being allowed to select their studies would choose the agreeable ones , nnd neglect those distasteful though none the less important. It was decided that it was not advisable to attempt business courses in the high school since the result of the short and so-called "Business courses" resulted In specialists. The exercises at Lane's opera house this evening commenced oy President Blgelow introducing Mrs. Bates of the Normal school , who sang a solo entitled "When the Lindens Bloom. " Henry C. Dane of Boston was Introduced and delivered his lecture , entitled "Tho Great Naval Battles of the Rebellion , " after which Hon. W. J. Bryan was introduced and made n very able ad dress on the subject of "liaising and Ex pending Money , " Kilttldr Steep Than take in any other form is what many people thinic. and Parks' tea is made for Just those folks.
