" ilny Afternoon ,
CIIICACIO , IH. , Morcli27.-May wheat Jumped
to BOe a bushel today , a 2-ccnt advance over
Saturday's hlRh mark , and closed at 70'ic.
The advance of lc Saturday scared the shorts
nnd they started In at the opening to cover
part of their line. The market was wild , and
closing quotations ranged from 7fl'c to 78Uc.
The heavy buying sent the market to 70'sC
with u ruali. Then the cjlquo came In by sellIng -
Ing some of Its holdings and the price dropped
to the opmlug figure. Tno shorts then began
to buy again and the market went up to BOc.
the clhiue aiding In the advance by taking
hack part of their original offerings.
The traders became nervoui , and from this
point until the close the market , see-sawud be
tween 7'JV and 7'J c , closing nearer the top.
July wheat was llrm , hut closed without ma
terial change In Its value.
Corn opened llrm but closed very weak at

were weak from start to finish and closed after

vow doll but llrm. The visible supply of
wheat uii > Miectcdly decreased 812,000 bu.
compared with an Inr-rea-o ot lfi-1,000 bu. the
corresponding week last year , but. the figures
had no appreciable cITeet upon the market.
The Interest In May dominates the market
to the exclusion of everything else. ; ihc
clltiuo brokers were being chicly watched ,
nnd although they mustI have disposed of con-

forced considerable buying for May aside from
the question of what the bl northwestern

Mime quarters ( bat the bull clique houses In
wheat liuve of late been bending thcirencrglcs

\VhlIonol having the broadsides of a. barn ,
this target Is of sulllclent sl/o to bo muchly
middled before June 1. Probably the capita !
of the clique Is opposed by equally largo
amounts and the tactics arrayed against It are
ai shrewd as their own. The Contract , stocks
of wheat have lately Increased about lOO.iiOO

1111 sales of May wheat. We think the least
the clique can cxp-et , to receive In that time
will be 000.000 bu. a week , which would raise
the total contract stocks by , ) iin < vl to over Ifi-

The wheat pit took the attention of opera
tors today to.such an extent Unit other pits
were neglected. The feature In corn and oats
was tbo seeming deslro of country longs to get
out of their holdings.

The Po-it says : Saturday's bank statement.
vhenanalyz"d In detail , proves that the half
lozen largo banks which ordinarily contiol
he movement of money Into and out of New
York City were this time caught napping ,
heir own books did indeed show in advance a
considerable out How of currency to other
Itles , but what they naturally failed to show
mil what had really become the feature of the
Market was the net receipt of legal tender * ,
n amounts varvlng from $30.000 to $500,000
by almost all of the smaller banks In the city.
The moral effect of this showing on the
noney market mas considerable. In addition ,
he rumors of Saturday that the largo gold
! \port orders for next Tuesday will
) o canceled proved true here. Only JuOO.OOO
u gold was withdrawn today. To account for
his sudden change of purpose , various rumor ?
of a more or less sensational character were
bet In motion. Of these It Is only lucessary to
say that so long as an Arnortcan loan Is
talked anout in London Just so long will the
gold shippers proceed with inorj than usual
caution. It is not In the least prob.xhlo th.it
the-sccrntary of tliu treasury , as the Wall
street story declares , Iris been unveiling his
nirposo to the gold-shipping hankers. Hut
hu bankers will naturally have thalrsm-
nolon and the lucent considerable fall In Ilrlt-
sh consols due solely to expectation of an
American loan shows how decided an effect
oven a surmise may have on the markets.
Of course it h plain that if a 4oO.OOO.ono
London loan were actually iiPiJoUate.l ex

whole matter must still bo left to conjecture.

curry through the homo rule bill and expressing -
pressing nliko the i-eittlincnts of the thou
sands wlio had gathered at the Academy
of Mttslo to iMidorso this action and thu
tena of thousands of Irishmen through
out America who are loval to their
motherland.
This was the keynote of the grout
gatliLM-iiifr of Irishmen at the Academy
of Music last evening. From the gov
ernors of almost every btato in
the union came messages of sym
pathy with the homo rule move
ment , ( lovoriior Flower of Xew York ,
in a letter , inclosing a check for
8200 , said : "My sympathy with the
cause of homo rule lias often been ex
pressed. " Governor Stone of Missour
bald : "It is a movement In the direction
of a larger liberty and better govern
ment for Ireland. " Governor Uussell of
Massachusetts extended his heartfelt
sympathy in tbo movement. Governor
Altgeld of Illinois wrote : "The time
has come for Ireland to have home rule
and 1 heartily favor every measure
which will tend to bring it about. "
Archbishop ( Jorrigan , unable to bo
present , expressed , through Manager
Farley , heartfelt advocacy of tbo prin
ciples for tbo promulgation of which the
meeting bad been called.
A dispatch to President Kmmett from
Justin McCarthy evoked enthusiasm. It
was as follows : " \Vc learn with grati
tude of yourself and federation to help
forward the Irish movement. KITectu-
ally continue tbo work- you did by
timely assistance at the general elec
tion. Gladstone's home rule bill will
pass the Commons , but only by tbo un
remitting attendance of the Irish party.
The movement needs the prompt and
generous support of kinsmen and friends
to oll'set the desperate otTorts of wealthy
and powerful enemies combined against
Ireland. "
After Chairman Judge John O'Brien's
opening address Hon. Bpurkc Cockran
was introduced. A sprained ankle com
pelled him to lean heavily on the back
of a chair. Several times during his
speech the entire house rose and cheered
to the echo the patriotic eloquence
which flowed from his lips.
"As I listened this evening , " bo said ,
"to tbo opening address of the chairman ,
I was profoundly impressed with tbo fact
that this assemblage of Irishmen and
sympathizers with those struggliner for
Irish freedom , convened to endorse a
measure introduced into an English par
liament by an English statesman , is an
evidence of the progress of civili/attun
and enlightened statesmanship. This
marks the culmination of a splendid
career. Never in the history of Knglish
statesmanship has there been a triumph
so b'reat as that of William K. Gladstone.
We meet to endorse the policy of eman
cipation , which has been substituted for
the policy of oppression. In view of this
meeting , and hundreds of other similar
meetings held throughout tbo length
and breadth of the } and , how stupid , how
impracticable , how shortsighted has
been the course of England these many
years in attempting to accomplish the
subjugation of tbo Irish people. That
sacred llamo of Irish nationality has
boon carried in the bosom of Irishmen to
every corner of the habitable globe.
Wherever they have settled they have
awakened the sympathies of the world.
England has at last awakened to the
feeling tlfat the moral law is binding on
the nation as well as the individual.
No one can violate the conditions of na
ture without sulTcring the penalties.
England has abandoned tbo policy of
violence , the last chapter in the long ,
sad story has been written ; the informer
and the hangman are no longer the ex
ponents of England's policy to Ireland ;
the jail and the gibbet have ceased to
play a part in the struggle. "
Major John Byrne and others spoke ,
and after John.loromc Root read a paper
which ho had prepared for the occasion
Dr. William B. Wallace called for sub
scriptions to the "emergency fund , "
which is to bo only a temporary loan
and will bo returned to the subscribers
