weeks ago the i-titoi-prlsltiK suporlntc-ndcnt
of the Omaha schools laid heforo the Hoard
of I'Mneatlon the feasibility of havltit ; the
school children , under tlio super
vision of tbo teacliur of music ,
sinj , ' into a iitioiioj.'rapli tiiul pivp.ire a iintn-
bet-of Cylinders of music that could be sent
iilonir with the Nehr.iska exhibit to the
World's fair. The board thought well of the
plan and it was agreed to keep the matter
quiet until the work was well under way , so
that other cities would not have time to fol
low the same plan and thus make thu attrac
tion too common.
Mr. FiUp.urich has the work now almost
accomplished and in a few days n score or
more of choice samples of music from the
public schools of this thriving city will be
wound around cylinders ready to be shipped
to Chicago to bi-como one of the most
unique and pleasing attractions at the fair.
The Higii school implls snnu Into the phonograph
graph yesterday and succeeded In producing
some very good samples of sweet sound in
the wonderful little preserver of the human
voice. It is not an easy matter to get good
samples of chorus sltulng in a phonograph ,
especially where there tire fifteen or twenty
parties wodudn' , ' the music , for the reason
that it is dllllcult for them to nss'.tmo the
proper position before the instrument. In
this effort the phonograph company has fur
nished a thirty -six-inch reuelvcr.und it seems
lo do the work \ory well.
After selections liavo'beensung Into the in
strument they are tested nml If there tire
an.\ bad delects the wjrk is done over again.
It is the intention to have the entire system
of musical training in the schools illustrated
by this means. Samples of the work will bo
recorded all tlio way from the primary
rooms , where the little ones are just Ic-arn-
lug luw to run the tlrst few notes of the
scale , tip to the last class in the Murh
school , where dillleult and classical music Is
sung. Superintendent Fitzpatrick and Miss
Arnold are deeply interested in the success
of the venture and feel very eonlident that It
will he a unique anddclightfil feature of llto
Nebraska exhibition.

Yesterday City Treasurer Holln received a
proposition from William Uurr , the attorney
for the Pullman company , looking to a set
tlement of the ease now pending in the fed

cover about $17,0 < ) ( ) in delinquent personal
taxes for tlio years ISSii-'ST-'SS and > 'J. ' The
Pullman company proposes to pay the city

The proposition is based upon the fact that
tbo company has been assessed but an
amount equal to these figures for the years
subsequent to Ito'.l. Such assessment was
made by tlio state board , nnd previous to
Unit time by the city assessor.
Treasurer liolln informed tlio company
that the city had no icnson to accept any
such a niggardlv proposition , and that if the
company was desirous of settling it might
make a proposition upon ttio basis ol the
18S5 assessment , which the assessor returned
at J.f,0K ( ) , ) , and not take the years that arc
subsequent to these under dispute.
