PROGRESS OF THE GRANT MONUMENT Suniclrnt ruiulu .Secured to Snltnlilj"Murk the Ilrntlnj ; IMiico of tlio ( Ireiit Ciiptiiln Uonuntl Slirrnuiu on Notoriety A Cliurrh n AIoniurl.it , I tn\v ; General Grant under flrosovornl times during' the Vieksbnrg cutnpai n , writes Editor MuCullogh in the St. LouU Globo-Deiuoeriit , but only once when ho the supreme eomnmnder of the day. Ono of the good traits of Grant's charac ter was liis scrupulous regard for the rights and feelings of his subordinates , nnd hence on a battlefield lie often eon- tented himself with the position of ad visor , without assuming that of director , to which his rank entitled him. When the battle involved only a subdivision of his army ho left everything to one of his corps commanders and only when nil his corps roninmndors of whom there were three at Viuksburg were engaged did ho take full control. Thus in his "Memoirs" ho speaks of being "with Sherman" at a certain battle on one day , "with Mi-Pherson" at another battle on another day , and s-o on ; but when it comes to an engagement in which all his troops participated ho makes it plain that everything was under his personal control nnd direction. The two assaults on the confederate works at Vicksburg were two tceasions of this kind. The second of these assaults took place on the 2 < 1 of May , when the whole army , with scaling ladders , forlorn hopes and all the ingredients of the terrible thun der of battle , made a desperate but un successful effort to capture the confed erate stronghold. As the bearer of an unimportant message from a division commander , I had an opportunity of seeing the great soldier in one of the most eventful hours of his eventful life. I had been told to look for him 'Some where near the center , and well to the front , " and I found him very well to the front , and almost exactly in the center of a line extending from the Ya/.oo rivet- on the right to the southern limits of Vicksburg on the loft. Ho was the least military-looking member of a small group , consisting , in addition to himself - self , of stall olllcers and onjerlies six or eight in all. Ho wore a soft lint surrounded by u cord , on which there were traces of gold thread , and a blouse without shoulder straps a gur- ment of which a second lieutenant would not have felt proud. But while careless of his own garments , ho had imitated Caligula by conferring rank upon his horse , whose Middle cloth bore the glit tering dpuble stars of a major-general. Only his left leg was in a stirrup , the right was drawn up and .seemed to bo twisted round the pom mel of the saddle. In his left hand the general hold a pine stick , which lie was whittling with a big knife grasped in the right. In his mouth was a big cigar , which ho was smoking violently. I delivered my me--age , to which an ap proving nod was all the answer required or given. The general continued to whittle nnd smoke without betraying the slightest emotion. It was about noon , and the battle had been raging since 10 o'clock every man of the whole army engaged. The stall'olllcors and orderlies in the group around the general \yero discussing the situation in all forms and dogn.'o.s of agi tation , but the general fcnid nothing un less asked a question , and then tnid very little. He was watching with his oars rather than with his eyes , because the range of vision was short owing to the trees and the fortifications. IIo listened to the llring as the noise advanced or re ceded , and told him that his troops were gaining or losing ground. Suddenly a shell from a confederate battery plowed into the ground near whore our party stood. The general , without moving a muscle except of his legs , straihtcned himself up in his saddle , and in a tone of voice not stronger 'than ho would use to call for a glass of water , said to one of his stall'omcers , "That buttery ought to hnvo been silenced an hour ago. See why it has not been silenced. " The staff oilicer went oil on a gallop nnd the general renewed the attack on his pine stick , which had by this time been whittled to the dimensions of a lead pen cil. I mustered courage enough to approach preach him and ask how the battle was going. Ho answered in n very pleasant voice that ho thought every thing looked well , but that there was a great deal to bo done yet before Vicksburg was taken. "What ho meant was that there wjts much heavy lighting"ever trenches and earth works nnd against almost impregnable mud forts , between where the army then was and the actual possession of the stronghold. I am satialled now that when the general answered my question ho had made up his mind that the as sault was a failure , nnd that Vicksburg could not bo taken in that way , but there was nothing in his manner or voice to indicate that ho had reached such a con clusion. There probably would not have been the slightest noticeable change in his manner or voice if , instead of defeat , ho had felt assured of victory. His imperturbable solf-possonsion could not have been wrested from him by any change of fate or for tune. If his army had boon annihilated ho might have smoked two cigars at a time instead of one , but that is as far as his emotions would have carried him , at least in their outward manifestation. I started back whence I had come with my message and learned in si short time tlfnt the troopi were coining back , leav ing Vicksburg still in confederate hands. That night I heard General Grant say : "We'll have to dig our way In , " and soil happened. In the memoirs the work of the 2'M Is not treated as u disaster , but rather as an unsuccessful experiment. The siege began immediately and at the end of nix weeks General Grant took din n ner in Vicksburg. si Thu ( irant .Monument. The real men of the war will bo deter mined by the closing t-couoH , and then the army will determine the questions. Newspaper pull's and helf-writton bio graphies , will then be ridiculous carica tures. Already has time marked this progress ) , and indicated this conclusion. If parties apply to you for materials in my behalf , give the most brief and gen eral items , and leave the results to the closer of the war or of my career. As well might a judge or bcnutor seek for fame outside their spheres of action as an olllcor of the army. Wo must all bo judged by our own peers , stand or fall by their verdict. I know I stand very high with tlio army , and feel no concern on that hcoro. Today I can do mor'o with Admiral Porter or the generals than any general ofllcor out west , except Grant , and with him I am as a second self. Wo are personal and ollleial friends.
