WILD FLUCTUATIONS MARKED DEALINGS TJiono Who \Vcro Covering Mny Sornicil to Ho NcllhiK .July nnil Doing It Iteck- Icmly Corn null ( ) n ( * Nat DUturbcd. * CltlCAno , III. , Mnrch lO.-Whcat furnished n surprise today , The May option Middcnly bc- came excited and shot skyward , whllo July was as weak as May was strong. During the time that the latter made n2iogalnlhu ! former dropped lite , tliu extreme spread having boon D 4'c against n dllTort'iico of l ? > c at the close last night. All the Indications had pointed to n weak and unovi'iilful day , when without warning the demand for May expanded and tbo bids wcru gradually advanced. I ocal Bhorts began to think that possibly the clliio ) Jiud opened a bull campaign In earnest and took fright at once. When they began to cover It was found that there wan hardly any for oalo and this only added to the alarm which ended In a paitlal panic , during which the price was bid up 2e } In less than half an hour. After Ilio scare had prised away facts wcro discovered which caused the belief among tifitny that the buying had boon on unlimited orders from shorts In thu northwest who hail With much unanimity resolved on covering their May hhortago. Sawyer & Co. of Iluluth , thu big elevator owners , woio said to bo the foremost buyers , but other prominent north- wo.stcro operators were not far behind. After the most urgent shorls had supplied tholr wants the market got dull again and lost lljc of the advance. Thu fcatuie of the mar ket was the fact that whllo May was on the ramiiiigi' , July was on the Mump. Those who were covet Ing May si'i-med to ho selling July mill doing It recklessly. H was ronmrkn < l in very singular that whllo calls on May were good , puts on July MI-re equally good. 1 he opening wns from ' < to 'f loner than yesler- dHV'HiToslng. then became stronger for May nnil weaker for July delivery , Hie formi'i ; ad vancing 2'e per liii. , while the latter declined I'.c. , then tecodcd IV for May and advanced 7.ii for .Inly , idling with Irieaiilnrlly. and the close was about 'tc higher for MayundlBc lower fur July than the closing of yestoidny. The union of the market caused the tllliei" nice between May and July , which was aliout 1 ' c at the opening , to widen out from 0'jc teD D ; e , and It was claimed Gc difference was paid at one time. Corn and oats did not slums the display In the wheat pit , ii'inalnlng within narrow limits mid averaging a shade higher. There was a .shake-out In provisions. Al though hogs were lighter than expected at 11,01)0 ) head and prici-s at the yards higher , the products wcro lower from the start. 1 he feature was the raiding of pork by Wright , In which Haldwln ami others Joined , \\lth no one giving support the May price dropped to Fl 7.57'/i the first hour , hater pork got a ijiilck upturn to ? 18 and closed ut M7.82'or aliout Die under last night. Lard closed from lOo to 15e better than low prices. Kstlmatcd receipts for tomorrow : Wheat , 170 cars : coin , lee ears : oat.s , HO cars ; hogs , 8,000 head. WTO Dull nnd Lower ICurly but Adviinrod Itiler. NEW VOHK , March 10. The stock market vas unsettled again today. 1'rlces were lower luring the morning , but rallied sharply after o'clock. The upward movement was checked > y renewed sales for both thu long nnd short iccounts. In a majority of the railway shares ho fluctuations during the entire day were confined within the range of from U to ? .i per cent. Among the exceptions wcro the coal locks , which declined from U to 2 per cent , mil later pirtlally recovered. Now York & Now England was stronger , despite the rumors n regard to the coming election , sumo clalm- ng that Mr. McLeod would be ousted from the nanagemeiit , and others that he will be found 0 be the m ister of the situation. In regaid to Heading there are continued rc- lorts of an Issue of receivers' certificates , but. lothlng definite will bo probably known until he statement of the receivers Is made known 1 few days hence. The great fealuro of the day was the weak- less of the Industtlals , In which the bears iibored strenuously to f'Tco liquidation. \inerlcan Tobacco declined 3't ' per cent , \merlcan Sugar 1'i per rent nnd Cotton oil , llstllllng ami Cattlefei-dlug , National Lead mil National Linseed Oil , 1 to 2 per cunt. A cliarp drive was made at General Electric , which dropped 5 to 90'i , rallied to 101U mil still later sold down to 994. There were rumors of a new Issue of stock mil a reduction In the dividend. These are emphatically denied by ofllelalsof the com- ) ! iny , who state that Its llnances are In excelv cut shape and who attribute the decline to bo operations of a bear Interest assisted b > enforced liquidations. The stock was freely aken by leading banking houses here and in Huston. The market closed weak. The i'ost says : It Is not easy today to see low far the reconstruction or dismemberment > f the Heading Is likely to play a part In stock nurket prices. That thu developments of thu : omlng week will be , however , of the highest mportanco In railway alfalrs nobody can fall o see. The Napoleonic schemes of the Heati ng have ended in Its abrupt overthrow , but Ike the projects of their proto-typo they have eft after defeat a very different situation 'rom thtit existing before thu enterprise saw Ight.
