The mild weather was accepted by many as
the harbinger of an early spring and probably
had some Inlluencu upon the minds of traders.
The selling of May wheat and buying "f July

reviving effect for a while , as did the low tem

The house being supposed to be In touch with

particularly when nt 7Cc there was still no
fdgti of support from the clique. The market
opened about clower than Saturday's clos

Free liquidation by longs in oats caused a
heavy feeling. The market closed easy at Uc

the first time at Ic under .May.

nen gii'iit credit for enterprise in organizing

A commission man reports that In u ship
ment of butter that lie received from the
country there was thirty pounds of ono lot
! hat had the nppcaranco of having been made
From frozen or scalded cream. It had a sort
of crumbly npnoarance , but when cut through
the middle with u knife It looked all right
where It was cut. When u chunk of tills but
ter was taken up In tlio hand and squeezed the
water would run out of It In a stream. The
butter was more like a sponge than anything
else. On being worked over the thirty pounds
was reduced to fourteen pounds. Occasional
rolls of such butter have been received In this
market , but heretofoie In such small quanti
ties as not to attract attention. Commission
men say thai butter of this kind has been
made with some kind of pepsin that has
caused the butter to absorb a largo amount of
water. It Is quite probable that , some ono lias
leen out through the country selling a recipe
for Increasing the output of butter. II Is
needless to nay that the scheme will bo a fail
ure , as buyers will make a deduction for the
water.

STOCKS AND IIONDS.
Securities \Verc lActlvo but Hntlroly I'ruo
from Kxclteiiicnt.
NEW YOHK , Keb. 27. The stock market was
qulto actlvo today , but almost entirely free
from excitement , but liquidation In many
nany stocks continued and the bears were
ictlvo In different portions of the list giving
.ho market us a whole a drooping tendency
: hroughout most of thoday , while u few stocks
were materially depressed. Movements were
rregular throughout the day , nnd hero and
hero substantial gains were established. Tlio
> ardenlng tendency of money restricted buy-
tig for the long account , and the unfavorable
jank statement Intensified thu anxiety In ro-
ard to money rates In the Immediate future.
Late In the day 8 per cent was reached In
call loans , which gave the principal Incentive
to a vigorous drive at Heading , although a ru-
nor that the rouortof the receivers would bo
infavorablo was used to depress the stock to
the lowest point yet attained since It began to
ilecllne. Sterling exchange rates were some
what easier and sterling loans were affected ,
which led to the abandonment of the orouo-ed
shipment of gold tomorrow and to the Impres
sion that no more would go out this-week ,
Huylngof stocks today was principally for the
short account. Opening prices were In almost
all cases sllglvtly lower , and fractional conces
sions were general In the early trading.
The grangers were weak , and Iliirllngton re
tired ! ' , and Hock Island 1 per cent , butSugar
was taken In hand by the Insiders , and after
soiling down to 110i It was lifted to 118 , and
It Is said the slock was used as collateral for
sterling loans today. The entire improvement
was maintained until late In the day , when in
company with the decline In Heading It was
letoir to 110'ic at the close , nt which point It
showed a net gain of 2Ji percent.
The only other stocks to show nny marked
strength during the day were New England
and Northern 1'aclllc preferred , each of which
closed with a gain of 1 percent. After a
fractional reaction from its best price , the
coal stocks wore sold early In the day , the
selling being accompaned by a rumor
that tlio sales agents would lecommend a
decrease in coal prices for tlio month of
March. Lackaw.inna raised 1 ! { per cent ,
though the others were fairly maintained.
The final drive at Heading , however , left It 27.
per cent lower for thoday. Hears attacked
dcnoraj Electric toward noon and fora time
it was the weak feature of tlio list , dropping
from 107 to 103l/i , and after a rally to luo it
again retired , closing 2i poreonUoworat 104.
The other Industrial1- sympathized with this
movement and Cotton OH closed 1 per cent
lower and Chicago Oas ls ! per cent. Krle became -
came prominent late In tlio day , when It also
was made the object of a rumor of a receiver
ship , H failed to rally and closed at 21 \ with
a loss of 19 percent. The general market
dropped , but moved within narrow limits , and
tlio cldNO was heavy at the lowest prices ,
The Post says : There was a more rational
tone to the stock market during the early
hours today , although the opening was some
what feverish and Irregular. There was , however -
over , no general return to bettor prices , the
favorable conditions being at least a tonitio-
rary rest In the work of guessing values. The
belief that the market has been oversold and
the accumulation of a short Interest In a few
specialties created sentiment to Increase
strength , but the response was not especially
encouraging. The fact that tliero was no pro
nounced rally shows that the conditions that
cause thu abnormal dullness nnd activity of
thu stock still exist , at least In a latent state.
These conditions are of a monetary naturu
and become aggravated day by day , There
were few new developments and It was practi
cally a waiting market.

" for All Sorts. "
' MONDAV , Keb. 27.
The week opens out with light receipts of all
kinds of stock. There were ninety-nine cars
of cattlu hero , of which about half were good
enough for beef. With eastern market stronger
and an active demand from both local houses
and shippers trade was brisk , with prices un
evenly higher titan Saturday. Sellers said the
market was lOc to 20c higher and buyers
claimed n still greater advance. Good to
choice 1,200 to 1 , 350-lb. steers sold at from
$4. DO up to $5 with fair to good 1,000 to 1,200-
Ib. steers at from $4,10 to $1.50. There was a
liberal showing of poor to fair stuff that sold
at substantially stronger prices from $4 down
to $3,00. The extremely disagreeable weather
rather facilitated business , dealers coming
to terms as quickly as possible , and trading
was practically over by noon.
Offerings of cows were only fair and the
quality nothing extra. The demand , however ,
was good from nil sources and prices ruled
about lOc higher than yesterday all around.
Poor to prime cows and heifers sold at from
$2 to $3.80 , with tlio bulk of the fair to good
.s til IT around $2.50 to $3.25. Hulls , oxen and
stags were generally firmer al from $2 to
$3.75. There wore not very many calves on
sale. Prices ruled fully steady at J2.80to
$5.75.
The regular dealers did the bulk of the tradIng -

nllous There were too few hog hero to make
a market. Receipts were only 2 cars and the
quality was about up to the lucent average.
Shippers ill 1 nothing , but there was a moder
ate speculative demand. Packers took a few
hogs for their fresh meat trade , but the regu
lar fresh meat houses took thu hulk of tlio
hogs. The good medium and heavy hogs sold
lit about steady prices at from $7.55 to $7.00
with light and mixed slnll steady to Oc higher
than Saturday at J7.00. There was no life or
snap to the trade and thoclo-io was weak , with
a few loaiU still In llrst hands. Sales worn
largely at from $7.00 to $7.00 as against J7.00
to $7.750 Saturday and J7.95 to $8 a week ago.

TUB llKBl The cattle trade was active at a
considerably higher range of prices. There
was nn advance of from lOc to 20c per 100 Ibs. ,
and the average gain was fully iOc. Credit
for the gain must bo given to the fact that the
receipts were far short of tlio usual Monday's
supply , only about. 111,01)0 ) head coming In.
There was a good attendance of tlio several
classes of buyers , nnd there was not nearly
enough cattle to 1111 the orders In hand. Choice
to o.xtra steers were quoted at from $5.00 to
$0.10. nnd fair to good grades nt from $4.OO to
$0.20. while from $3.00 to 84 was paid for com
mon light , t'ows and bulls wore in brisk de
mand , and , being In small supply , brought
Jirlccs that were satisfactory to sellers. I'rom
1.70 to $4.20 was paid for poor to extra quali
ties.
ties.Hogs looked much better to buyers than last
week and they were willing to pay a smart ad
vance on i-aturdny's prices. Common to prime
lightweights wore salable at from 87.HO to
$7.80 , ml.ied and medium at from7.70tort.lO
ami heavy weights at from J7.00 to J.S.30. The
bulk of the ifi-ht fetched from $7.00 to $7.HO ,
and from J7.HO to $8 were the popular figures
for medium and mixed. These quotations nro
an advance on the closing prices of last
week of from IOc to iOc. There were
Instances whcro an advance of 20c
was paid and the average gain was
close to IOc. Shippers and local
packer * both wanted stock and quick work was
made of tlio 20,000 head. Stale hogs com
prised about 7,000 of the supply. The range was
from $7.40 to $8.20 , culls and flttlo pigs going
nt from $4.70 to $7.bO , and $8.25 being paid
for n fowloads of heavy.
Activity and llrmness were features of the
sheep market. The receipts were large , but
there was free buying by local slaughterers
and some demand for shipment on the hoof ,
and the supply was closely bought up. Hales
wore on a basfs of from $ J.20 to $0.25 for poor
to choice sheep and from $4.20 to $0.30 for
lambs.

"FEELS LIKE A NEW WOMEN. "
Oh. would I were dead now ,
Or up In my bud now.
To cover up mv head now ,
And bivcii gooj cry.
Nerves jnnplcd nncl out of tutio wring
this cry from a tired woman.
Many u ono fools this wish for n peed
cry nftcr the dinner is over mid tlio
puosts gono. There nro ninny trials that
hoset the faithful housowlfo nnd relux
her nervous system.
"Four weeks nrV { says Mrs. * P. P.
Vlckcry of Etist Auburn , Mo. , "I wits
suffering from ono of those awful bad
headaches , which have boon my com
panion , for the past your , only worse nt
times. My back ached. 1 did not sloop
well , and I had those frightened nights
which only those who are nervous can
understand , 1 did not euro whether 1
ate anything or not rather not. I foil
so tired and had that all-gone feeling ,
with no strength to do my easiest homo
duties. Ono short flight of stairs took
all of the breath and strength I had , and
then I conld just sit down and cry.
"Every little noise made mo jump and
my head snap. My eyes felt as though
they wore being drawn in through the
top of my head. I must confess I was
fooling sick. A friend , who hud only
taken a few doses of Faino's celery com
pound herself and received much benefit
from it , said to mo : "Won't you please
try some of my compound ? " Well , I
took some. In three days I was feeling
like a now norson , got mo a bottle , and
when that was gene I could take a full
dose.
"I have gained strength every day ,
and can eat Ihroo or four times a day. I
sleep like a log , and my head must bo n
a now one , as 1 have not had aheadacho
since I began taking the compound. I
can got up two Illghts of stairs all right
now , and fool so much bettor that I wWt
every ono in the world who over hail
these feelings would just try niiobotilout
Palr.o's celery compound and bo convin
ced of its worth. 1 eannot say too much
in its praise. ' '
And Mrs. S. O. Perkins of the same
place , whoso portrait Is given above ,
says : "For throe years 1 was in a very
weak and debilitated condition. I tried
many physicians but could got no roliot
from any of them.
"I tried I'aino's celery compound and
to that 1 owe mycomplotu restoration to
health. My nervous system was a total
wreck , and I was unnb'.o ' to do my work
much of the time , but now 1 am doing
my own work and can slcop well nights
the result of taking throe bottles ot
the compound. I recommend it to all
who are suffering from dvHDopsia or are
'run down. ' I do not think that I could
say too much in favor of it. "
Thousands of such letters from every
state in the Union might bo printed , but
thcso years of splendid results have so
connected I 'nine's coloi'i compound witli
success that the name ilsylf lias bccoina
a perpetual letter of recommendation.
