The second day of the Young Men's Chris tian association convention oi > eued yes terday morning xvlth a largely Increased attendance. Besides the delegates and out of toxvn visitors there were a great many people from the citv who look in the meetings , and the great est Interest was manifested. To at tend one of these meetings has a tendency to broaden the viexv of the association xvork xvhich is held by those xvho have never given very much attenlion lo Iho mailer , and xvho are accustomed lo think of Ihe mem bers of the Young Men's Christian association as goody-goody people , xvhose xvings have already begun to sprout. Hoxv- over many exceptions there may be , the men xvho are atleudinp Ibis convenlion are anything bui on the milk-sop order. There Is not a sign of xvinps. Orgitnlxril fur HuMiir H. The convention xvas organized for the xvork of the day by the election of the folloxving ollU-ers : I'rosidotit , B. C. Ward of Dos Moines ; first vine president , C. W. The report of the state committee , which \x7is made at the morning session , shoxved the folloxvinp interesting figures : Keceipts for the year , S4.W1.41 ; disbursements. fJ.llA-i.fiCi ; number of separate associations , f > 1 , divided as folloxvs : College , LKJ ; city , 'J3 ; railroad , 1 : paid secretaries , : ; s ; vacancies , 4. Six ncxv associations have been organized during the year. There have been K conversions at district coux'cntlons , 103 in college associa tions , ' } in railxvay state deputations and r > S. > in all. The membership of trie col lege associations is 1.724 , and the total nicanborship is 7.110. Thirty-five men have been sent to the summer school at IJIKC Geneva. The average attendance of the meetings held all over the state on Sunday afternoons is,1"i. ( . There are eight mildings owned by local associations , with a total value of & ! ( iO.O < K > . The total expanse las been $4.i.KKi. The stute secretaries have ruvoled 5.0K ( ) ( ) miles. The report recom nended tlmt .JO.JOO be set aside for the state xvork. Letters xvere read from forty of the asss- 'iations ' , all of which took a very hopeful viexv of the situation. The xvork is being lushed out in all directions , the improve ment being in none more noticeable than in ; ho colleges , where spiritual needs are being areil for xvlth the same solicitude us mental. "I'ermiiml WorUe-ri , , " Dr. J. V. Conzctt of Dubuque spolre on the great need of trained personal xvorkers in Lbe associations. Alexander Patterson of nducted an interesting bible read ing In which the central thought xx-as , "Christ ns a Personal Worker. " No attempt xx-as made ut oratory , but the speaker in an unassuming , straightforxvard xx-ay , which xvas remarkable for its clearness , proceeded : o lay doxvn the rules of action for Christians n regard to personal work us derived from .ho accounts of the xx-orl : of their great eador. lie"xxas listened to with the closest attention. A paper written by PYed A Day tun of Clintoiioii "Boys' Work" xvas read by .another delegate , the xx-ritcr tiaving been detained at home. In the afternoon , after a song service led by C. C. Smith , a paper \x-ritten by H. B. Soulter of Cedar Kapids , xvas read , not by the xxTiter. but by "one of his products , " as the chairman expressed it. The paper upon "Tho Responsibility of Director ? for a Businesslike Management of the Association , " was very interesting , al though short. Ho thought in some matters tbo members folloxved too closely the directions iof the secretaries In the various matters of the association worl : or. rather , relied on them to do the xvork and then they would follow their di rections. They needed individuality. He also brought out the point that to bo suc cessful in any undertaking we must be inter ested in it. Hoxv woilld u business man suc ceed xvere he to drop in once or twice u week to look after affairs ( Thus if the associa tion xxero to succeed each director should make it a ] > olnt to visit tbo meetings and take nn individual interest. Ho recom mended that each give a few niphts each xvcek in which to go in and shake hands and have u tulk xvith the members or visitors. Although I > lr. Soulter is , ns the secretary of the Cedar Itnpids association said , "one of the busiest of the busy men. " yet ho finds time to spend a portion of his time in such a 'manner and seldom fails to visit txvo or three times a week. He seemed to think directors xvere sometimes too willing that the secre tary should take the matter off their hanJs. Some interesting discussions folloxved upon this subject. IMncHtlmml Ciuh t- . A. M. Wright of Sioux Falls , S. D. , read n paper on "Evening Educational Classes.1 He shoxved the different classes of young men in the cities , and what each class xvas doing in association xx-ork. "Even xvith the mighty strides in such xx-ork the intellectual lines xvere neglected too much. " Ho ad vised , as some have already done , the estab lishment of schools in the associations for tlioso uuable to attend other schools. It was shown that out of thirty city associa tions there xvero only about six or sex-en xvhich conduct such schools. Others had tried but I hud made a failure of it. In one or txvo associations trade schools are conducted. Mrs. B. H. Slocum of the Iowa Sabbath association xvus next introduced to the con vention and briefly stated the onject of the xvork in xvhich she - xx-us interested. In a stirring talk she portrayed the increase of Sabbath desecration and open violation of all Sunday luxx-8 , and stated that the object of the association xx-as to do away with this and make the day xx-hat it should bt > a day of rest and consecration. Sne especially urged the young men to ta He up the work , fet , said she , "Tho Sabbath of the future xvill be what the young men make it. " She showed that there xvas an increase of n.UOU Subbutb xvorking men over two years ago. The appeal xvas one that could not but help touch the hearts of her heurcrs and she may exjHict the help of all true Young Men's Christian association members lu her noble xx-ork. The different committees xvere given a fexv instructions , after xvhich the benediction xvas pronounced. lluuiurlrd | liy Young Lntllm. Immediately after the close of the after noon sen-ice the delegates divided Into three sections , the rallxvay , city and college men going to the Young Men's Christian associa tion rooms , the Fifth Ax-enuo Methodist and the First Presbyterian churches , where uthey had discussions of the topics thai most iniercsled them. One of Iho pleasing features of the day xvas u banquet tendered the college men at the Presbyterian church parlors by the young ladies of the Presbyterian and Congregational churches. Seventy college men were Ihoro , rupresenl- ing Ihe folloxving colleges : Mount Pleasant , Upper loxva , loxva State. Highland PurK , PCS Moines. Drake , Iowa , Simpson Centen ary , loxx-a Agricultural nnd Central. The menu xvas an excellent one , and the guests ate as only college men can eat nfler a day of theological discussion. Thursday mcht ns ho left the Northxx-estcrn train at the local dei > ot. The pair ran into a neighboring saloon und passed out at the hack door , one of them dropping a piece of paper as be went through the saloon. The paper xx-ns nicked up by the bartender and on examination proved to bo a bogus check for $7f > 0. Wiisou xx-as caught and taken to the police station , where he is still confined. His companion escaped. Efforts arc being made to llnd out where he is wanted , and it is very likely that enough evidence xvill be secured to send him across the t state xx-ithout taking him anywhere else. He ausxvers to a dot the description of a man xvho xvus wanted aliout a month ago for turn ing u trirk on the Northwestern train , und iiii is thought to belong to the gang thut has infested the transfer for so long. The mayor , city marshal , clerk and mem bers of the council of the little town of Hum- burg , in Fremont county , are all in a kind of pickle on account of a lit tle order Judge Smith made last November , and which they are noxv charged xvith violating. Like almost every other town , it seems Hamburg is afflicted with a debt that exceeds the limit fixed by the con stitution of the state. Last Nox-ember it xvas proposed to make some im provements , and in order to pre vent it some of the heaviest taxpayers of the toxx-n came into court , and citing the fact that the limit had been passed , secured an injunction restraining the city officials from issuing any bonds. Last Monday com- nluint was made that they hud disregarded the order of the court and had issued bonds to the amount of several hundred dollars to pay for lumber to be used in making public improvements. The mayor , marshal , clerk and aldermen xvere thereupon arrested on the charge of contempt of court , and next Wednesday was set as the time for hearing what they have to say for themselves. Another police court fiasco xvas terminated yesterday morning , when Assistant County Attorney Troup asked that the case of the state against certain South Omaha Ramblers be dismissed. The case had been continued on the shoxving of the county attorney thut material testimony , xvhich he hud'reason lo believe could be jirocurod-xvas ; not then ut hand. ' The county attorney xx-ns on hand promptly on time , but after xx-aiting In vain for a half hour for the return of Chief of Police Bren- nJii , who bad been sent to the office of City Attorney Van Dusen on an errand , he arose and addressed the court as folloxx-s : "May it please your honor , 1 came here this morning fully determined to prosecute tlus case , but after xvaitinc beyond the hour sst for trial I am compelled to admit that testimony xvhich I , yesterday , hud every reason to believe xvould be on hand at this time Is not available. I have utterly fulled to secure the same. It seems that the offi cials and citizens of this city do not appear to be particularly anxious to prosecute the gamblers at this time. The coin- plumts were filed in good faith , and on my part due diligence has been exercised to prosecute the case xvith vigor , but this morning It seems the principal witness [ meaning Ofllccr Thomas Emminger ] is ubsent iu Lincoln ; at least , a telegram bus been shoxvn mo purporting to ' ome from him at Lincoln , and the chief of police , xvho was sent out on an errand over an hour ago , bus not returned ; therefore there is nothing left for mo to do but to ask your honor to dismiss the case. 1 do not feel Justilled in asking further continuance under the peculiar ciivumstunces surrounding the case. There are many curious circumstances connected xvith the case , xvhich naturally excites the suspicions of tbo better clement of tbo city. It is an open secret that gambling has been going on nightly for the past year , not secretly , but openly , by the grace of the police. The gamblers , however , have apparently xvnuted some assurance I'rom the authorities thut they xvould not be molested mid hax-c repeatedly made over tures to the city elllcials for immunity from interference , either by paying a monthly line or taking out u license. It is also said that the gamblers declare it costs them too much to run as they have been doing , and they would -prefer to pay a definite sum and feel safe. The inference is that , although the city has not received a dollar by way of fines or license fees from the gamblers , homebody has , and that the' ' sum thus taken is greater than a regular fine or liceuse fee xvould be. The apparently unfair action of the police lu singling out one boifee to be pulled while others xx-ere not disturbed is likely to result in exposures xvhich muy result disastrously to certain officials. It ip stated by a reliable gentleman that ho xvns m Dick Berlin's place a fexv minutes jWtore Deavcr's house was raided and saxv 'a t-ertuin councilman come iu , hurriedly take the proprietor aside for a whlsjxired conversation , after xvhich some money xvas put ui the councilman's bunds uud the place darkened. The houses xvere running the next night after the raid and Deinrdr himself opened up In a ncxv place.
